President Bush Slashes Family Planning Funds, Pro-Abortion Groups Mad

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Bush's latest budget he's
submitted to Congress slashes federal funding for family planning --
promoting contraception in other nations. The decision has abortion
advocates hopping mad.
On his first day as president in 2001, Bush signed an executive order
prohibiting taxpayer funds from being used to pay for or promote abortions
in other nations. He later expanded what is known as the Mexico City Policy
to cover all State Department funding.
During that time, President Bush froze the level of family planning funding
at $425 million annually -- the amount funded in the last year of the
Clinton administration. That was done as federal funding of most other
budget areas increased.
But with Bush's new budget, which contains cuts in programs because of
funding needs for combating terrorism and hurricane relief, family planning
funds have been slashed 18 percent to $357 million.
"It's ironic that an administration outwardly committed to reducing the
incidence of abortion would take away valuable tools for preventing unwanted
pregnancies," pro-abortion Rep. Nita Lowey, a New York Democrat, told the
New York Times
However, Ed Fox, an official at the United States Agency for International
Development, said more emphasis has been placed on funding programs that
provide greater benefit for women -- such as combating AIDS and malaria.
According to the Times, Fox also pointed to a $21 million program to help
women in Afghanistan combat sexual abuse.
"This is a much better budget than we've had in the past for women's
health," he told the Times.

PARIS (Reuters) - Encouraged by Pope Benedict's encyclical on love, a Roman
Catholic bishop and a group of Christian intellectuals in France are urging
the Vatican to reopen the debate on its ban on artificial birth control.
Bishop Francis Deniau told the Catholic magazine Le Pelerin this week that
Benedict's first encyclical "Deus Caritas Est" (God is Love), which was
widely praised for the positive way it spoke about sexual love, was a
hopeful sign for possible change.
Sociologist Catherine Gremion noted the encyclical -- the highest form of
papal writing -- did not condemn Catholic couples "who do not manage to live
out their love in strict respect for Church teachings."
"That's an important sign," said Gremion, one of the co-authors of a book by
Christian intellectuals entitled "The Church and Contraception -- the Urgent
Need to Change."
Benedict made clear last November he was not considering any change in the
contraception ban and that family planning was only allowed by the "rhythm
method" of abstinence from sex during a woman's fertile period.
Pope Paul VI banned contraception in the 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae,
arguing that sexual intercourse was meant for procreation and any artificial
method to block a pregnancy went against the nature of the act.
That encyclical prompted Catholics to leave the Church in droves and
undercut papal authority. Many practicing Catholics now simply ignore the
ban and some say it weakens the Church's message on other moral issues such
as abortion and bioethics.

Where "promiscuous" refers to people who have sex in ways not approved
by the (celibate) leaders of the catholic church, and "fund" means
help them avoid having children that they cannot afford.
In short, neocons would rather see children die than accept that
people have sex.

First of all, in the countries with the most "people who hate us",
promiscuous lifestyles tend to be dealt with very harshly by the
locals, so that's not really the issue. The issue is primarily helping
married women limit the number of children they have to something
the family can support and that won't completely destroy their
own life. I suppose you would favor the "rythm method"?
Secondly, doesn't limiting the birth rate of "people who hate us" seem
like... oh I don't know ... kind of a *good* idea?
