Priest Identify Right to Life as First Issue |
On April 12, 2004, U.S.Newswire posted a statement
by Priests for Life titled: "Priests Urge Voter
Participation; Right to Life is First Issue."

Excerpts:
"As Pennsylvania voters prepare for the April 27
primary, some 1300 Catholic priests have released
a statement calling for active voter participation,
and echoing statements of the Catholic bishops that
identify abortion as the primary issue.
"The statement, coordinated by Priests for Life,
quotes the bishops' 1998 document Living the Gospel
of Life when it says that Catholics should 'embrace
their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege,
but as an opportunity meaningfully to participate in
building the culture of life'.
[...]
"The statement also takes aim at candidates who support
abortion, and states, 'No public official ... can
responsibly advocate for or actively support direct
attacks on innocent human life' (Living the Gospel of
Life).

Papa Jack comments:
I do not remember ever before hearing of such persistent
pressure on Catholics to consider the Pro-Abortion/Pro-Life
positions of politicians running for election.
President Bush has clearly supported Pro-Life positions,
while Senator Kerry consistently supports the Pro-Abortion
positions (despite being an "active Catholic"). It will
be interesting to see if the Catholic Church's statements
will have any significant impact on the voters' choices.
Thanks for considering my point of view.

Oh, look! A press release from a Catholic special-interest lobby. And
yet another dead link from PJ.

Hey, if my organization were plagued with the scandal, corruption, and
well-deserved bad press of the RCC, I too would labor double-time to change
the subject.
Of course, don't neglect the value of the 'Mel dividend'. Strike while the
iron (read:movie) is hot. BTW, I note that "Jesus" did indeed rise over the
Easter weekend. Beat out "Hellmen", at that. A message from God, no doubt.

The primary issue. Nothing about state executions (opposed by the Pope),
inequities in the distribution of basic services (opposed by the Pope), nor
unnecessary wars (opposed by the Pope), or much more.
"The statement also takes aim at candidates who support
abortion, and states, 'No public official ... can

When will Catholic priests be told to refuse communion to politicians who
support the death penalty, opposed by the Pope, or the War On Iraq, opposed
by the Pope?

This thread raises a question. Has the Roman Catholic Church ever
excommunicated any politician for supporting views it does not support?
What about any other Christian church?

Oh, sure. For instance, the Church automatically excommunicated anyone
belonging to the Communist party back in the early part of the 20th century.
(Nazis were not excommunicated, and Catholic priests even acted as chaplains
for SS squads.) This would have covered Catholic politicians who were
Communist Party members. I don't know when the ban on being a Communist was
lifted.
What about any other Christian church?

Well, I don't think they excommunicated any Nazis. Of course, that is
assuming that they didn't support them.

"If we want to be consistent we should take the same radical
stand on other issues. ... Why don't we demand on [arms
control] what we claim for abortion - total acceptance of
what we believe?" -- a Catholic bishop, quoted in Peter
Nichols' book, "The Pope's Divisions: The Roman Catholic
Church Today"
The Pope has expressed his unequivocal opposition to capital
punishment and the war in Iraq on several occasions. Why does not the
Catholic Church make the same demands on pro-death-penalty or
pro-Iraq-war politicians as it does on pro-choice politicians?
I do not remember ever before hearing of such persistent
pressure on Catholics to consider the Pro-Abortion/Pro-Life
positions of politicians running for election.
Funny how that pressure is conspicuously absent wrt to the death
penalty or the war in Iraq, both opposed by the Pope.
President Bush has clearly supported Pro-Life positions,
Did he propose an anti-abortion constitutional amendment when no one
was looking, as he has for anti-same-sex-marriage or even flag
burning?
while Senator Kerry consistently supports the Pro-Abortion
positions (despite being an "active Catholic"). It will
be interesting to see if the Catholic Church's statements
will have any significant impact on the voters' choices.
Anyone know of a reliable source for a "seamless garment"?
