I don't happen to believe that story. It is pretty much impossible for
anyone to find how why someone is added to the watch list so I doubt
that the counter person would have any idea.

The clerk said he might have been added because of participating in
peace demonstrations, but that what just a guess especially ase the
professor hadn't done that. So he made his own guess.
I still don't think the official reason had been officially revealed.
