Report: British Jews facing more anti-Semitic sentiment than ever
By Assaf Uni, Haaretz Correspondent
LONDON -
Britain's Jewish community faces an
unprecedented level of anti-Semitism
and feels more threatened than ever,
according to the report of the
all-party parliamentary inquiry
into anti-Semitism,
which is to be released Thursday.
The panel found an increase in
"anti-Semitic discourse,"
particularly among leftist groupings,
and recommends a series of actions to
prevent the situation from deteriorating
further.
Panel chairman Denis MacShane,
who will present the report's
conclusions to Prime Minister
Tony Blair Thursday,
told Haaretz Wednesday that the
report rings the "alarm bells"
for Britain.
The History of the Jews in England
(1066-1655)
Sadly, it has continued beyond 1655.
Although there are many specific details of the settlements,
development, and progression of the Jews in England between the years
1066-1655, a single general pattern emerges: Jews came, were subject to
increasing persecution, and eventually all expelled from England. This
general pattern defines the course of the Jews in England until shortly
after Shakespeare's death.
Shakespeare had probably never met a Jew because Jews had been expelled
three and one-half centuries before he lived.
Shakespeare probably relied primarily upon inherited cultural
stereotypes, common folk-wisdom about the demonic Jew, as well as
literary sources when he sketched his character of Shylock for The
Merchant of Venice.
Never mind already. There have been plenty of latter day jews who
have lived up to and exceeded the Fagin stereotype: Cap'n Bob Maxwell
& Sons, 'Dame' Shirley Porter, Ernest Saunders, Gerald Ronson, Jerry
Levine, 'Lord' Levy etc etc.
