Again, 51% of the women surveyed said the government
should prohibit abortion or limit it to extreme cases, such
as rape, incest, or life-threatening complications.
That's not at all surprising given that the majority of women who are having
abortions now are (1) poor, (2) minority race, (3) unmarried, (4) young
mothers.
More women than every are older and unlikely to have any concern about
unwanted pregnancy. What we see is just people decidiing how _other_
people should be forced to live.
In other words, women who have abortions are now in the minority
in more ways than one - and not likeably so. When it's not you or your
friends or relatives having abortions, when it's only "those people", who
cares whether it's illegal and unsafe? Apparently a substantial percentage
of American women are incapable of empathy and simply do not care about
women and children who are darker and poorer and less socially acceptable
than themselves and their loved ones.
When did America become a nation of hatred?

: When did America become a nation of hatred?
Although America has never been a nation of hatred, right up until the
1930s or so, racial bigotry of one sort or another was simply taken as a
matter of course in America. Some countries, like France and Britain, were
a little ahead of the United States in *some* ways, but the current
anathematization of racism is something novel in human history.
Black people experiencing slavery, or even the kind of discrimination that
existed in the Deep South up until 1950 or so, might well have perceived
America as a "nation of hatred", for that matter. Unfortunately, it's hard
for people to recognize at the same time that this can be true, and yet,
despite it the history of America is something of which Americans can be
justly proud. America has been a world leader in the area of freedom, and
a mighty bulwark for freedom as well. Other countries may have been a bit
more progressive in this or that area, but many such countries still have
fundamental concepts of government which don't put people first and the
government as their creature.
Thus, in progressive Sweden, a professor was censured as incompetent
because he taught the natural law theory of human rights. That news item,
from about a year or two ago, did not warm me to their country; the
government there earlier took custody of a child away from a German couple
because they decided, after the child came home unhappy from day care, to
withdraw him from day care, which strikes me as even loonier.
I had not imagine not minding if German troops were to occupy Sweden, but
they had actually managed to achieve this. (Of course, Germany's
achievement in becoming a democracy, instead of still pining for Nazism,
also helps.)

Although America has never been a nation of hatred,
It is now. Hatred and bigotry are not only tolerated but even used
and promoted by the right-wing. Hatred is used by the government to
justify immoral wars. Hatred is used by religion to attract members.
Hatred is used by the media to sell product. Many political
organizations use hatred against other groups in order to promote
their cause.
Just look at the screeching hatred seen in these newsgroups. Look at
your own contempt for the rights of other people.
