consensus in our country for protecting the institution of

Consensus doesn't matter if DOMA gets overturned
by the Supreme Court, which it very likely will. The
Full Faith and Credit Clause in the Constitution is
pretty specific.
I don't speculate on court decisions, but I'm sure the court is taking
into
account Congresses opinion, the opinion of states who have had same
sex
marriage on the ballot and polls of the American people.
Not bloody likely. The Court overturned the
Communication Decency Act, written by the same
congress and equally popular with the people.
