There is another way. There *has* to be. Conflict is not the only thing
that can hold a group together. Compassion, ideology, goals: These do
the trick as well.
My country has apparently found out that they really do miss the Cold
War. So they've invented another indefinite, infinite war. Only this
time they're claiming we're really *in* a state of war. It's the Pax
Romana all over again. We're just waiting for the Visigoths at this
point. My kids' kids probably won't see that day, but this is a bad
course indeed. We've got to leave the 1940's behind.
I know it's a bit cliche, but read Orwell's 1984 again (or for the
first time)... One of the primary slogans is: "war is peace" which is
about what the cold war ended up being and now the current US
Government wants to kick it up a notch or two and make the
"war" a hot war, and also a permanent state of war....
The simularities are chlling.
No they aren't. We've been in longer wars than the one we are currently
fighting.
The length of the war up to now is not the issue - it's making it a
permanent one that parallels "1984." A long war will run hot and cold
just as it did in "1984." Indeed we should be shivering!
