The following information is obviously a news article that
"Jaonjames" didn't have the sense to post the CITES for.
(Or maybe he actually thought someone might think he had

Same-sex marriages in Australia will be outlawed and gay
couples blocked from adopting children from overseas under
laws proposed by the conservative government on Thursday
that echo similar moves made in the United States.
If so, then Australia's "conservatives" are just as hateful as
are America's neocons. Let's hope, for the sake of Australia,
that they are that country's laughingstock. Just As the neocons
increasingly are becoming, over here. And that they NEVER
prevail.
But changes would also be made to allow same-sex couples
to nominate their partners as beneficiaries of superannuation,
or tax-free pension death benefits.

Prime Minister John Howard said his government planned
to ask the national Parliament later Thursday to amend the
Marriage Act to define a marriage as a union between a man
and a woman, preventing gay and lesbian couples from
marrying.
Clearly revealing him to be just as big an ***** as
Warmonger-in-Thief/Head Bigot George W. Bush.
It does not currently define marriage.
Then it should REMAIN that way. Any nation that uncon-
scionably deprives its citizens reasonable rights would be a
delight to the nightmare vision of in "1984") George Orwell.
The move, which was expected to win parliamentary
backing, ...
....which would speak very BADLY for the Parliament, and
give it a worldwide black eye...
...echoes calls by Howard's close ally...
...and similarly hateful, ignorant, and bigoted moron,
APPOINTED "President"...
...George W. Bush for the U.S. Constitution to be amended
to ban same-sex marriage.
Which the majority of Americans, being FAIR-minded and
SENSIBLE people, will NEVER allow to happen.
"The commonly accepted definition of a marriage is a union
of a man and a woman," Howard said. "We have decided to
insert this into the Marriage Act to make it very plain that that is
our view of marriage."
If so, then it's back into the Dark Ages of bigotry for Australia.

polls with elections expected in months, ...

Actually no, the Liberal party is actually split in half over this
issue, the people in the realist half (people who appose the measure for
what ever reason) know that if they do what little Johnny wants, they're
certain to be defeated in the next federal election; it will be simply
a matter of losing three seats.
Better yet, even if they *did* pass it through the house of
representaties, the Liberals do not have the majority in the senate;
neither Labour, Democrats, Greens or any of the independents will
support it thus making any laws like this meaningless.
In the past I couldn't stand the tree hugging crowd, but I must say,
they have come in useful with this government, especially with the last
lot of legislation they tried to get through in the we hours of the morning.

cheerlead for the US rather than making sure the foreign policy serves
the long term interests of Australia in the Asia-Pacific region; sorry,

what do you think is going to be the reaction of countries within the
Asia-Pacific region?
Australia has shot it self so many times in the foot, it isn't funny and
as for Peter Costello, even if he were to take over as leader of the
Liberals, he is about as unelectable as Simon Creene.
