Reopen Abu Ghraib Inquiry
by Steve Soto
Read Seymour Hersh's New Yorker piece on Lt. General Antonio Taguba's
apparent blacklisting at the Pentagon for blowing the lid off of Abu
Ghraib. It seems pretty clear that the CENTCOM chain of command knew
about the despicable interrogation practices used at Abu Ghraib and
had seen them first hand. It also seems clear now that CENTCOM and
the Office of the Secretary of Defense covered up the war crimes, and
that Rummy lied to Congress about it in his testimony on May 7, 2004
when he said that the first he knew about the seriousness of the
transgressions was when he saw the pictures only recently.
Taguba indicates that he sent at least a dozen copies of his
investigation and the pictures up the chain of command in CENTCOM and
into the Pentagon. The direct chain of command is from the theater
commander to CENTCOM, then directly to the Office of the Secretary of
Defense. For the record, at the time of the worst of the torture in
late 2003, the two senior command officials who Taguba noticed with
his findings were Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez in Baghdad and CENTCOM
commander John Abizaid. Sanchez was replaced a month after Rummy's
lies to Congress on May 7, 2004 with General George Casey. Abizaid
took over in CENTCOM from Tommy Franks in July 2003, just before the
worst of the abuses took place, and yet Abizaid was allowed to stay
at CENTCOM for nearly four years.
According to Hersh, GOP Senator John Warner ? tried to dig into the
matter but "was warned 'to back off' on the investigation, because
'it would spill over to more important things.'"
Perhaps Carl Levin will get off his ***** long enough from rubber
stamping the Iraq "no strings" funding bill to reopen the Abu Ghraib
chain of command matter, and find out who knew what and when they
knew it.
Abu Ghraib was a war crime, plain and simple.

Yeah, well, it's a little more complex than Levin rubberstamping, you
know, it's not MTV war.
It would appear, on the whole, the Democrats are making sure,
significant progress toward unraveling the Neocon mess.
I suppose what struck me the most about that article, though, was the
corporate mediocrity within the Pentagon, subject to the same ennui
the Neocons are currently self destructing under, stupid selfish
choices, without the best interests of America in mind.
I mean you just fell back on the time honored tradition of accusing
your enemy of your crimes, the most flagrant propaganda method of the
neocon Bush administration. You're an American, why is it so important
for you to destroy the America political process, in the same manner a
foreign enemy would ? In the process you destroy yourself, your
country and your party. And my, it didn't work for Bush, after all did
it?
And you're being trolled, btw.
Still dont get it, do you?
A little propaganda wont' do it, but I have to wonder at your
motivations. Bush is the culmination of 40 years of right wing
treason, and he practically flushed the country down the toilet. So,
you know, they couldn't do it, they were wrong, and stupid, specious
thinkers. What are you hoping to gain?
You see what they want you to see.
I read this wonderful paper today in regard to 4th generation war, and
Chinese, or insurgent, methods of propaganda, and the Rove republican
model followed it, to a T. Grab the press, and "modify what a target
population thinks it knows about itself and the world around it."
<This quote is from the paper was written byLtCol Thomas X Hannes, and
can be found in the Marine Corp Gazette, Sept 1994. It is an excellent
article, though I do have some disagreement with a few of his
premises.> My point, though, is the republicans, like China, or Mao,
or you, see American culture as a static entity, and neither
understand the psychology of their "enemy," or even themselves. So
they are bound to fail.
And the decision to leave VietNam, as opposed to being an American
failure, as Hannes states, was in fact prudent, and saved America from
a Russian fate, ala Afghanistan. And in part it was the free press, or
even the Chinese propaganda, that forced this conclusion, mobilized
the public. An educated American populace is smart enough to see
through the *****, and as long as the press is truly protected, the
country will stay healthy. The army doesnt always know what's best,
and sometimes the public needs to say "enough." An intelligent
American democratic populace, with a press free of special interests,
can withstand an onslaught of propaganda and treason, and thrive, and
survive. We are beginning to see signs of life, again, despite Rove
and Bush's catastrophic mess, their propaganda war, Addinton and
Cheney's rush to destroy the Constitution. So , in the long run, we
may have "lost"VietNam, which was but one battle, and won the war...
We have a responsibility to our country, and a responsibility to it's
heritage, and that includes a healthy political plurality.
Viet Nam also revealed the limitations in Chinese military thinking ,
and that has been overlooked, too. So the Pentagon has had almost 40
years to figure that gig, and in Bush and Rove, a real time model. The
model implodes upon itself, eventaully. In the long run, it cannot
sustain itself.
I'm a bit disjointed, I feel as if I have a head full of popcorn and
bubble gum, so I apologize for the simplistic analysis.

cuts...
