Over the years I've seen many a conservative in my chronic pain support
group come and go, men and women who have lost the job, the house, the
spouse, the family and whose lives have been destroyed after an injury
or illness leads to severe chronic pain. Usually they stop coming when
they realize that we don't have a miracle cure for them, and our
emphasis is on taking charge of your own life and coping as best you
can. When reality finally comes and smacks them in the face with a 2x4,
the reaction ranges from shock and anger to a bewildered sense of
betrayal. It is interesting to watch the transformation from
conservative to liberal in many of them, as they start realizing the
truth of what we've been saying all along. Some, unfortunately, remain
true believers in the cult of the invisible hand even after the
invisible hand has ***** slapped them senseless. I feel nothing but a
sense of tragedy for any human being who has to go through this, and
perhaps more so for those who still have blind faith in doctors and the
system, as they are more likely to be used, exploited and harmed.
Suddenly, faced with a catastrophic illness, and having lost their job
and their insurance, they wonder why the *county* doesn't have a
prescription drug program, or why it takes 2-3 years or more to get
Social Security Disability, and then, until recently, it didn't have
any drug coverage and the coverage it now has is a cruel joke. They
can't understand why drugs like Oxycontin are so expensive, and why are
doctors so reluctant to prescribe them: "I'm not a drug addict,
dammit!"
Yeah, we know, brother.
The real tragedy is in knowing just how much better our country would
be if more people would just WTFU and see that other countries have a
better approach to medical care than we do. Generous administration of
the 2x4 is the most effective therapy known for conservatism, but even
then, it has a high failure rate and is painfully expensive and
wasteful, just like our medical system.
