Roe v Wade Almost Overturned |

Papers Reveal Roe v. Wade Almost Overturned; Blackmun's
Records Unsealed on Fifth Anniversary of his death." Go to:

Excerpts:
"As lawyers and court watchers have long suspected,
the Supreme Court was ready to effectively overturn
the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion
in 1992, but Justice Anthony M. Kennedy got cold
feet, and the vote went the other way.
"Internal notes in the papers of late Justice Harry
A. Blackmun reveal the secretive dealings that led
to the court's ruling in Planned Parenthood v. Casey
that year.
[...]
"Blackmun's notes show that Chief Justice William H.
Rehnquist led a five-justice majority to overrule Roe.
Four other justices voting with Rehnquist were Byron
White, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Kennedy.
Rehnquist himself was to write the majority opinion.
"Unbeknownst to him, Kennedy was having second thoughts,
and agreed with Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and David
Souter, to a compromise position.
"The Casey ruling carved out a middle ground that upheld
a woman's right to abortion largely free from state
regulation.
"The case was argued in April and Rehnquist was at
work on his majority ruling, when Kennedy sent a
note to Blackmun, NPR reported.
"'I need to see you as soon as you have a few
moments,' the note read. 'I want to tell you about
a new development in Planned Parenthood v.
Casey. It should come as welcome news.'
"Blackmun picked up a pink memo pad and
scribbled, 'Roe Sound,' The New York Times
reported Thursday.
"Blackmun had written the Roe ruling 18 years
before, and had guarded it from previous attack
from conservative justices.
"Blackmun's paper legacy, filling more than 1,500
boxes, will be unsealed Thursday on the fifth
anniversary of his death.
[...]
"His authorship of Roe v. Wade brought him more
than 60,000 angry letters and repeated threats
on his life.

I wonder what nickname should be given to Harry

far more innocent deaths than Mengele --

Since when should we expect those who support ending human life to tell the
truth about anything. I wouldn't have expected Blackman to tell the truth
about what he ate for breakfast and, even less, the truth about anything
that had to do with morality. It's a lot like Hitler supporters saying
Hitler couldn't have had anything to do with the death of the Jews since he
never said anything about killing Jews. Anyone who expects killers to tell
the truth about anything is very stupid. Blackman reporting threats on his
life? Give me a break. He was hyping his own image most likely, making
himself out to be important when he was only a shill for a larger movement.
He probably got a good payoff from International Planned Parenthood and
other rich supporters of the ongoing eugenics movement.

What nickname will you give W for pushing his anti-gay agenda to the point
of an amendment while largely ignoring his anti-abortion agenda?
Thanks for considering my point of view.
Do you too consider it more important to keep gays from marrying than an
amendment that might slow the "senseless slaughter," as you put it?

There have been perhaps 35,000,000+ abotions since 1973 but not
355,000,000 (in the U.S). Perhaps it was a typo.
What of the millions of abortions preceding Roe-v-Wade? And is Blackmun
really responsible for legal abortions which would have been done even
if abortion was illegal? Whenever "pro-life" people quote the number of
legal abortions they give credence to "pro-choice" claims that
"pro-life" people are more interested in making abortion illegal than
they are in opposing abortion itself or in protecting fetal life.
