Sales soar for morning-after pill |
Ah, the free market...
By DAVID CRARY, AP National Writer
NEW YORK - "In the year since it was approved for over-the-counter sales,
the morning-after pill has become a huge commercial success for its
manufacturer, but its popularity and solid safety record haven't deterred
critics from seeking to overturn the milestone ruling.
The pill, marketed by Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. as Plan B, was the focus of
bitter debate for three years. After repeated delays, the Food and Drug
Administration declared on Aug. 24, 2006 that customers 18 and older should
be able to buy it in pharmacies without a prescription.
Barr began distributing the over-the-counter version last November, and all
national pharmacy chains now stock it. The company projects that sales of
Plan B will total about $80 million for 2007, almost double the total for
2006 and up eightfold from 2004, when Barr acquired the product as a
prescription-only drug."
[...]
Of course, the pro-liars are outraged:
"A coalition of conservative groups, including the Family Research Council
and Concerned Women for America, has filed a lawsuit in federal court in
Washington seeking to reverse the FDA ruling. The groups contend that the
FDA acted unwisely under political pressure and lacked authority to approve
the same drug for both over-the-counter and prescription-only distribution
based on the user's age."

Hopefully, such a lawsuit will backfire, and evidence will show that
undue political pressure was placed on the agency to delay making the
drug OTC, or avoid doing so all together. And therefore, the FDA
should make the drug available for all ages of women OTC.

The charge that the "FDA acted unwisely under political pressure" is
particularly ironic, in that Shrub's administration (and it's constituents)
had exerted considerable pressure on the FDA to *not* approve Plan B:
"The American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family
Physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the
American Academy of Pediatrics, and other leading U.S. medical organizations
all supported OTC access.[120] An advisory committee to the FDA recommended
that Plan B be made available over the counter in 2003.[121] In 2004, the
FDA refused the advisory board's recommendation and prohibited
over-the-counter sale, citing insufficient evidence that ECPs could be used
safely by adolescents without medical supervision. Reproductive rights
supporters accused the FDA of basing the decision on political pressure from
the pro-life lobby. The Center for Reproductive Rights filed a lawsuit
regarding the approval process, which has not been resolved as of December
2006. In the legal proceedings, two senior FDA officials have alleged in
depositions that the decision to reject the OTC application was made on
political, rather than scientific, grounds to "appease the administration's
constituents."

Why?
Don't you think parents have a right to know what drugs and/or
medicines their underaged daughters might be taking? What if this
drug is harmful to a developing young girl? Do we know for sure?
It's dangerous when we start throwing out drugs to just anyone
regardless of age.
I also think parental notification and knowledge is an issue here as
well.

O.k., but lets also consider working on reducing young girls from having
sex, who shouldn't be having sex..I'm talking about very young girls, not 16
or 18 year olds.
We need to work on ways to find solutions to deter young kids from having
sex, who are not ready. Then there wouldn't be a need for these young girls
from having to look for pills like this.

Well, parents have a right to know.
I know as a parent, if I had a 14 year old child (using 14 years old as an
example), I certainly would want to know what she is doing, what she is
taking, ect...

as someone else posted recently, your misogyny is showing again.
worse yet, you don't know why.
Misogyny is what you accuse men of who don't want you 'doing' their
underage
daughters or their girlfriends or wives, isn't it?
No, that's not what he meant. But then, you've shown time and time
again that you don't understand the words you use.
Oops.
So, you mean that misogyny is what he accuses persons of who don't want
people having sexual intercourse before they are ready to be parents?
Which is it?

Nowhere and at no time have you EVER been able to show where I am

Don't you think parents have a right to know what drugs and/or

Drugs like aspirin?
We are not talking about aspirin,
Yes we are, you lying dumbshit. You wrote "drugs and/or medicines".
Aspirin is a drug and a medicine.
What I wrote was a concern about what young girls are taking and if it

Young girls don't take aspirin?
I also wrote about parental rights,
So you argue that drugs like aspirin should not be sold over the
counter because girls might get at it without parental permission,
You just hate women and want to force childbirth upon girls.
Coming from someone who just said...
So it's time for out-of-context quotes, pervert?

Young girls don't take aspirin?
Once again, for the illiterate, I am not talking about aspirin. I'm
talking about a drug that is used that will cause a miscarriage and
I'm also concerned about parental notification and parents rights.
Something you care little to nothing about. You're strawman isn't
going to work because I'm not going to let it work.
I also wrote about parental rights,
So you argue that drugs like aspirin should not be sold over the

I would hope that a parent would actively take a role in knowing what
their children are taking, regardless of what drug it is.
You just hate women and want to force childbirth upon girls.

The requested message, I0qdnYyFwbY3veeiXTW...@comcast.com, could not

Hmmm, could it be you're making this up?
Yep, you are making it up as well as altering text.
What you have done was taken a statement or a sentence that was
something like this...
"So you're saying I am a child molester?"
And you are taking out the words
"So you're saying"
That's just plain out dishonest and lower than even Keegan would go.
How would have imagined there was anyone lower than James G. Keegan
Jr.?
Now, do you wish to explain to all the women in this newsgroup why you
have degraded them so badly?
Or do you want to run and hide again?
