On Tuesday, July 15 or Wednesday, July 16, a critical vote is likely in
the House of Representatives on re-funding of UNFPA, the United Nations
Population Fund. Please contact your House member immediately to say
that you support U.S. funding for UNFPA! This will be one of the most
important votes in the House this year, and only with your help, will we
be successful.
As you may recall, last month, during consideration of the State
Department Authorization bill (H.R. 1950), the House International
Relations Committee adopted an amendment from Reps. Joe Crowley (D-NY)
and Barbara Lee (D-CA) that would restore U.S. funding to UNFPA. This
was a major victory for population activists! The Crowley-Lee amendment
would reverse President Bush’s damaging decision to end U.S. support to
UNFPA and calls for providing $50 million in each of the next two fiscal
years.
Opponents of family planning, led by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), may
attempt to delete the Crowley-Lee provision when the bill comes to the
floor of the House. This could happen as early as Tuesday, July 15.
The vote on this issue will be extremely close!!! The more emails,
faxes, and phone calls to Capitol Hill that we can generate, the better
our chances are of a victory. Please contact your representative
immediately to say you support U.S. funding for UNFPA, and ask that they
vote against any attempts to gut the Crowley-Lee provision
