Someone recently put forward the idea, on a cable discussion show, that
science and technology could solve all of the problems that over population
brings, the "What's wrong with more people?" position. However, as the
population increases faster than the food supply, faster than the available
resources and services to take care of them, faster even than the water
supply, population increases faster than our science and technology is able
to deal with them. If every university and college on Earth started running
24/7, with unlimited resources, they could never produce enough scientists,
mathamaticians and engineers to deal with even just our current population
rate of increase. The human race is now a house of cards. Eventually we'll
reach a point where even zero population growth isn't enough, only negative
population growth will save us all. That will mean forced abortion and
steralization, and our decendants will wonder why we didn't do it sooner.
"Reality is what you stumble over when you walk around with your eyes
closed." Soon, we will stumble over the reality of over population. It may
be next year, or 50 years from now. But, there will be a global collapse of
our civilization due to excess population. In the aftermath of that event,
nothing will ever be the same. The time to act was decades ago, it's too
late now. History, if there's anyone left to record it, will judge us
harshly.
