The Fallacy of Comparing Iraq to World War II |
There is little parallel between Germany in 1941 and Iraq in 2003. There was
no war going on in Iraq until the U.S. invaded. Iraq had not made any move
towards an attack. It hadn't even ramped up its military spending. The
country had no significant military allies. The "axis of evil" meant to
parallel the Axis powers of WWII did not include an alliance between Iraq and
the other two "members," although it did include a mortal animosity between
Iraq and Iran. It would make sense to draw a parallel between WWII and the
invasion of Iraq if Germany had been a third-world country whose chief
military goal was to attack its fellow Axis member, Italy...if it could ever
rebuild its military ability to even a sixth of Italy's military.

civilians reported killed by military intervention in Iraq. Are you
familiar with this site? They admit that the count is likely to be
low, for reasons similar to the one you mention, and others. In the
brief quick-FAQ section, they write "It is likely that many if not most
civilian casualties will go unreported by the media. That is the sad
nature of war."
This is *still* the best and most reliable site I have seen with
