HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis: Political Left's Gifts to the World
Environmentalism, political correctness; what do they have in common? In a
word, genocide.
Western Left-wing ideals are killing millions in the third world every year.
Each year, almost 2 million people in Africa die of malaria. Most of those who
die are children under the age of five. Survivors often suffer from impaired
cognitive development and face a blighted future. Malaria is a parasitic
infection characterized by cycles of chills, fever, sweating, anemia, enlarged
spleen and a chronic relapsing course. Four types of parasites affect man,
through infection by the anopheles mosquito. In the past, malarial outbreaks
were controlled by the liberal application of DDT. Yep, that’s the very same
DDT that the Leftist green movements lobbied so vigilantly to eliminate from
world-wide use. Even today, a reintroduction of DDT into the malarial breeding
grounds of Africa and other tropical areas of the world reduces the incidence
of malaria to a tolerable level. In India, which in 1953 had a population of
about 500 million; malaria affected over 75 million people. Now, because they
have never stopped using DDT and are manufacturing their own supplies, deaths
from malaria are in the low thousands and infection rates which by now were
projected to be near 200 million, are about one 100th of that with a
population nearly three times what it was.
The problem in other nations such as those in Africa is that organizations
such as the World Bank and WHO are reluctant to support the use of DDT for
eradication of mosquito populations using DDT out of fear of criticism by
radical organizations like the Greens and other extremist environmental
groups, and out of political correctness and sympathy for those extremist
groups. They are sacrificing humans, children, because of their rabid
zero-tolerance position on DDT. Basically they’re favoring the survival of
birds before babies. As is typical of Leftist extremists, it is interesting to
note that these are mostly white affluent Europeans and Americans making the
value decisions about the lives of children of color. Through their influence,
DDT has become more difficult to procure and use and pressure against the
insecticide remains. On 17 May 2004, an international treaty aimed at
restricting or eliminating persistent organic pollutants, known as the
Stockholm Convention, came into force and only through a major campaign by
South Africa and others DDT was exempted for use in public health. Anopheles
mosquitoes have grown resistant to the insecticides that replaced DDT and the
first-line drug therapies have also been losing efficacy in stricken areas
such as the KwaZulu-Natal Province. Since 2000, the combination of the
reintroduction of DDT and the use of expensive new drugs has had considerable
success in reducing the malarial incidence in South Africa.

Title: Exposing the Right 19 Jan 2006 02:52:48 PM
DDT and Other Chlorine-Based Chemicals were Banned for a Reason
The Salt Lake Tribune:12/22/2002
In a recent article entitled, "How environmental activists brought back
malaria", Steven Brockerman blames environmentalists for banning DDT
and causing millions of deaths from malaria. His arguments are
virtually identical to those used for years in similar articles by
industry frontman, Steven Milloy. Neither Brockerman nor Milloy are
scientists and their arguments demonstrate that they don't read the
peer-reviewed scientific, medical, and public health journals.
Malaria is transmitted to humans by mosquitos and one of the largest
problems with any insecticide, including DDT, is that insects rapidly
develop resistance to the chemicals. In 1958, the US government funded
a five-year program to eradicate malaria in tropical countries. The
program failed and funds were cut off, not because of
environmentalists, but because the heavy agricultural use of the
insecticide led to resistant mosquitos. In a bizarre twist, the
incidence of malaria was greater in many areas after the effort than
before it started. If DDT hadn't been used so heavily in agriculture
and if the funds weren't cut off, malaria might have been eradicated.
Unfortunately by 1967, four years before DDT was banned, public health
officials realized that the effort to control malaria had failed.
A major concern, understandably not discussed by Brockerman, is the
public health risk of DDT, dioxin, PCB's and other chlorine-based
chemicals, collectively called organochlorines. This family of
chemicals contains some of "the most dangerous carcinigens ever
tested". Many of them are commonly referred to as "hormone mimickers"
or "endocrine disrupters" because they behave like hormones in humans
and other mammals. They interfere with natural hormone levels and
trigger strange and unnatural effects in offspring. Scientists
recognized this possibility as early as 1950 when they noticed that
rooster chicks exposed to DDT failed to develop male characteristics.
More recent studies demonstrate that organochlorines cause complex and
severe effects in embryos that lead to birth defects, immune system
abnormalities, cancer, reduced sperm counts, and impaired intellectual
development in children.
It now appears likely that many breast cancers may be linked to the
estrogen-like effects of organochlorines. Although there are many
factors that increase the risk of breast cancers, scientists now
recognize that the common thread in all the risk factors is the total
estrogen exposure. In humans and other mammals, organochlorines behave
like estrogens, so it is possible that they are largely responsible for
the recent increase in breast cancer. In fact, several studies noted
elevated levels of organochlorines in malignant tumors found in
breasts. Anecdotal evidence -- that breast cancer rates have climbed
markedly over the past 50 years -- also points to environmental causes.

From 1941 to 1971, the synthetic estrogen, DES, was prescribed to

nearly five million women during pregnancy to minimize hot flashes and
morning sickness. In 1971, DES was linked to increased incidence of
vaginal cancer in the daughters of women who had taken the drug and the
government acted quickly to ban it. This is a classic case, for the
chemical appeared to be safe to those taking it, but instead damaged
embryos and affected the next generation. Other cases may not be so
obvious and are therefore very difficult to prove conclusively.
The chemical industry and its representatives, such as the Chlorine
Chemistry Council, exploit this difficulty and hire writers such as
Milloy and Bruckerman to produce popular articles in which they blame
environmentalists rather than the chemicals. These "hired guns" deflect
criticism and argue that there is no proof that organochlorines are
dangerous to people or the environment. Unfortunately, much of the
public is hoodwinked and ignores the "precautionary principle".
The "precautionary principle" is a simple concept that aims to
anticipate and stop potential problems before they start by forcing
manufacturers to prove that their products do no harm prior to being
sold or used. Most parents use a form of the precautionary principle
when they teach their children to look both ways before crossing the
street. It is also the idea behind old proverbs like "an ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure". Most folks just consider it
common sense. Strangely, when it comes to chemicals we have it
backwards, for the US regulatory system allows virtually anything to be
released into nature unless it is scientifically proven to cause
immeasurable harm. In other words, citizens are being used as guinea
pigs without their knowledge. And that's just the way the chemical
industry wants it.
Polls consistently show that three-quarters of Americans do not trust
business to protect the environment. Therefore, PR firms, third-party
groups and individuals are paid to actively discredit the precautionary
principle by attacking the uncertainties inherent in science and
medicine. They are masters of propaganda and convene special forums,
write reports, letters to the editor, and op-ed pieces such as
Brockerman's, in which they use the classic manipulative techniques of
name-calling, doublespeak, and fear to sidestep and distort the real
issues by blaming environmental groups. However, the rising incidence
of birth defects and life-threatening cancers is no environmental myth;
instead, it comes from poor public policy and is nothing less than a
high-risk gamble with our future.

Legend, you nailed 'er! One of the ways liberals *help* people is by
encouraging them to abort themselves out of existence. One might
suggest in this very same sense that Stalin was helping the Kulaks when
he had Kruschev kill around 10 million Kulaks, or Hitler helping the
Jews, Gypsies and Slavs when he exterminated about 6 million of them.
These socialists also *help* people by running a company store of sorts
whenever they gain power by grabbing every resource and means of
production, either outright or through the taxing mechanism, to see to
it that everyone is utterly dependent on their beneficence and favors.
In other words, their idea of equality is that everyone is equally poor
and dependent on THEM!
As in Europe now, the people ride trains and subways and motor scooters
while the socialists running the show give them 5 cents back on the
dollar and ride around in Mercedes.

Title: Republicans Can't Be Trusted with Public Health and the Environment 19 Jan 2006 02:58:23 PM
Are you suggesting that DDT is harmless to humans? Or are you
suggesting that compared to malaria, DDT's toxicity should be
overlooked?
Republicans, with their support of intelligent design, their disbelief
in global warming, and labeling of everything that cuts in to their
financial bottom line as "junk science," have lost all credibility on
issues of public health and a safe environment.
The fact is that while no longer used any longer in the US, DDT use
continues in other parts of the world. Swell folks them Republican big
business types, they continued to export it to third world nations for
use on crops destined for import back into the U.S. That's right, DDT
is still poisoning us through our food and air. That's what the
Republican, National Review, Big Agribusiness push now for DDT is
about. It's got nothing to do with humanitarian interests, saving
lives - it's about Big Agribiz being able to make even more money and
how to let them keep using DDT around the world.
DDT is NOT banned for use in human epidemics such as malaria elsewhere
in the world.
DDT has several serious drawbacks. In addition to the risk of animal
and human health and life.
As early as 1946 we learned that insects become resistant to it. That
means you have to keep making it stronger in order for it to be
effective. So even using it for agriculture profits has its' limits.
As usual, Big Biz in this time of Republican non-regulation and
non-oversight doesn't think ahead. Big Biz only thinks about the next
quarter's profit statement to shareholders.
Adverse health effects of DDT in animals include reproductive and
developmental failure, possible immune system effects, and the
widespread deaths of wild birds after DDT spraying. As is the case with
many organochlorine insecticides, a major target of acute DDT exposure
is the nervous system. Long term administration of DDT has brought
about neurological, hepatic, renal and immunologic effects in animals.
Research has shown that DDT prevents androgen from binding to its
receptor thereby blocking androgen from guiding normal sexual
development in male rats and resulting in abnormalities. Evidence has
been found in alligators in which hatchlings from DDE-painted eggs are
sexually indeterminate; possessing both male and female reproductive
characteristics. (WFPHA, 2000).
In laboratory cultures of whole phytoplankton from the Caspian and
Mediterranean seas, DDT reduced primary production by as much as 50% at
a concentration of 1 ppb. Marine fish appear to be very sensitive to
DDT: the 96 h LC50 for it ranges between 0.4 and 0.89 micrograms/l for
a variety of teleosts. Bivalve molluscs, on the other hand, with their
ability to concentrate organochlorine pesticides without coming to harm
have a 96 h LC50 greater than 10 mg/l. (Clark, 1997).
Long range atmospheric transport of DDT into the northern countries,
including the Arctic, is well documented, DDT has been detected in
Arctic air, soil, snow and ice, and virtually all levels of the Arctic
food chain. Many studies indicate that bottom sediments in lakes and
rivers act as reservoirs for DDT and its metabolites. Despite a
twenty-year ban in the U.S., It is still found concentrated in soils
and freshwater sediments. Aquatic vertebrates such as fathead minnow
and rainbow trout have also been found to contain DDT.
DDT also resists breakdown in the environment. DDT is stable and fat
soluble. People exposed to high levels showed concentrations of DDT in
their fat 1000 times higher than that in their blood. It builds up in
your body. It's like building up a tolerance to sleeping pills, so
that it takes increasingly more of them to get you to sleep, but you
can't use sleeplessness as the gauge for safe dosage. What is enough
to get a person who is habituated to soporifics into a sleep state can
be enough to suppress his breathing and heart rates. A dose big enough
to get you to sleep can put you to sleep, permanently.
Centers for Disease Control, National Report on Human
Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, 2005 -
http://www.cdc.gov/exposurereport/
A rise in reproductive abnormalities in both humans and wildlife over
the last 20-40 years has caused some scientists to look for
environmental factors that may be influencing reproductive capacity.
DDT and its metabolites are considered to be environmental oestrogens.
In a study in India, a group of men who worked with DDT was found to
have decreased fertility, and a significant increase in still births,
neonatal deaths and congenital defects among their children. Israeli
men with unexplained fertility problem were also found to have high
blood levels if DDT. (WFPHA, 2000).
Another group of nontarget victims of DDT (and other pesticides) are
insects that prey upon insect pests; that is, the natural enemies of
the pests. Killing these has serious ecological - and economic -
effects. For example, once apple growers began controlling pests with
DDT, they quickly found their orchards being attacked by scale insects
and mites. The reason: DDT had killed off their natural enemies.
Republicans don't care about the lives of black people in African
nations. Republicans want their land and the resources in the land.
If Republicans cared about Africans' lives, they would be eradicating
mosquitoes in many other ways. DDT is merely the cheapest, and
Africans provide opportunities to be unwilling testing subjects for
drug trials on so many diseases they are suffering from because of
their exploitation by the west. They're the guinea pigs. After them,
we're next.
"We are subjecting whole populations to exposure to chemicals which
animal experiments have proved to be extrememly poisonous and in many
cases cumulative in their effects. These exposures now begin at or
before birth and - unless we change our methods - will continue through
the lifetime of those now living."
- Rachel Carson, "The Silent Spring," the book that led to the
creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and ecological
awareness movements worldwide.
http://www.pbs.org/now/science/pesticides.html
Republicans have been trying to discredit and destroy all ever since,
without success.
