Three Jews and a Pope

Recently, a Jewish group invited me to speak. When I
mentioned that my topic would be Pope Pius XII, I was informed that it
would not suit their needs: "My chairman thought it would open up the wounds
of a few holocaust survivors in our group who lost mothers, fathers, sisters
and brothers in the gas chambers. We have a few, not many, who escaped from
Germany. They still are angry that the Catholic Church did not condemn
Adolf Hitler." Although this is not true, many Jewish organizations continue
to state that "the Catholic Church did not condemn" the Nazi leader.
From England, Israel and the USA, three Jewish historians
have refuted this distorted portrayal of world history: Martin Gilbert,
Michael Tagliacozzo, and David Dalin. All three have taken issue with Daniel
Goldhagen, John Cornwell, James Carroll and other writers of the past
century.
As I pointed out in my own books during the past decade,
why would German leaders state: "The Pope has repudiated the National
Socialist New European Order. and makes himself the mouthpiece of the Jewish
war criminals." When Pius XII learned about the Nazi round-up on October 16,
1943, why did he immediately send an official, personal protest through the
papal Secretary of State Cardinal Luigi Maglione to German Ambassador Ernst
von Weizsäcker? This protest was published in the Vatican's official
"Actes." Why did the Pope provide false identification papers to potential
victims? Why did he order Vatican buildings, churches, convents and
monasteries to open their doors and find hiding places for Jews and other
refugees? Why would Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir state: "When fearful
martyrdom came to our people in the decade of Nazi terror, the voice of the
Pope was raised for the victims." Albert Einstein stated. "Only the Church
stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing the
truth." (Time Magazine, 1940)
How long will honest scholars condone statements by those
who defame Pope Pius XII? Today even hardened detractors of Pius XII
generally consider that, throughout the Second World War, the pope was
hailed as a towering moral hero in the face of cataclysmic terror: a man
solicitous on behalf of Jews and Gentiles alike who worked tirelessly for
peace. Through diplomacy, personal contact with Heads of State, and the
underground railroad, he protected the Jews and other victims of the Nazis
in a way that no other leader with mighty war weapons could provide. His
charity and love prevailed.
No Pope throughout history did more than Pope John Paul II
to create closer relations with the Jewish community, to oppose
anti-Semitism, and to make certain that the evils of the Holocaust never
occur again. Relations between the Catholic Church and Jewish people are
marked by mutual respect and understanding. Pope John Paul II visited the
Chief Rabbi at the Synagogue in Rome in 1986 and declared that "the Jews are
our dearly beloved brothers," and indeed "our elder brothers in faith." He
established full diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the State of
Israel. A survivor of both Nazi and Communist oppression himself, John Paul
II has consistently praised Pope Pius XII for his heroic leadership during
World War II, and led the cause for his canonization. His successor,
Benedict XVI, has followed in his footsteps.
During the early part of the nineteenth century, pogroms
were going on in Poland. On December 30, 1915, the American Jewish Committee
appealed to Pope Benedict XV to use his moral influence and speak out
against anti-Semitism. Eugenio Pacelli, who was working in the Vatican
Secretariate of State, was deeply involved in the preparation of a
pro-Jewish document signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Gasparri
(February 9, 1916). This statement appeared in the New York Times, April 17,
1916 under the headline: "Papal Bull Urges Equality for Jews." It was
printed in Civiltà Cattolica, April 28, 1916, v. 2, pp. 358-359, and in The
Tablet, April 29, 1916 v. 127, p. 565.
Twenty years later, during his 1936 visit to America,
Cardinal Pacelli met with two officials of the American Jewish Committee,
Lewis Strauss and Joseph Proskauer, and re-affirmed Benedict XV's
condemnation of anti-Semitism, promising to make its teaching better known.
These facts are found in the archives of the American Jewish Committee, and
are documented by Naomi Cohen, in her official history of the AJC, Not Free
to Desist: A History of the American Jewish Committee, 1906-1966, The Jewish
Publication Society of America (Philadelphia, 1972, pp. 180, 214-215, 578,
section vii).
Pius XII was sympathetic to Zionism and the creation of a
Jewish state, both before and after he was Pontiff, as a number of works
have shown: Three Popes and the Jews by Pinchas Lapide (1967); The Papacy
and the Middle East (1986); and Christian Attitudes Toward the State of
Israel by Paul Charles Merkley (2002). (The last fifty years of conflict in
the region seem to confirm Pius XII's fears of ethnic resentments and
hatreds.) On July 30, 1944, Pius XII told the newly-appointed high
commissioner for Palestine "of his intention not to interfere with the
Jewish aspiration to create a national State in Palestine, saying that he
was animated with great sympathy for the Jews." (The Tablet of London, Oct.
25, 1958.) And in 1945, during a meeting with Jewish survivors of the
Holocaust, Pius XII told his Jewish audience approvingly: "Soon, you will
have a Jewish state." (The Jerusalem Post, October 10, 1958)
Recent followers of the anti-Pius XII myth, Susan Zuccotti
(Under His Very Windows), Michael Phayer (The Catholic Church and the
Holocaust) and David Kertzer (The Popes Against the Jews) make no mention of
compelling documents that vindicate Pope Pius XII. The evidence in Actes et
Documents (Libreria Editrice Vaticana) points to Pius XII's ceaseless
activities for Peace. He was against Racism, Nationalism, Anti-Semitism and
War. His efforts were on behalf of the persecuted: Jews, the homeless,
widows, orphans, prisoners of war. It is important to note: 1. The Holy
See's February 9, 1916 condemnation of anti-Semitism, which Eugenio Pacelli
(the future Pius XII), then working in the Secretary of State's office,
helped formulate. 2. The January 22, 1943 report written by the Nazi's Reich
Central Security Office, which condemned Pius XII's 1942 Christmas Address
for "clearly speaking on behalf of the Jews" and which accused the Pontiff
of being a "mouthpiece of the Jewish War Criminals." 3. The Nazi plan,
reported in the July 5, 1998 issue of the Milan newspaper Il Giornale, which
described Hilter's plan to "massacre Pius XII with the entire Vatican,"
because of the "Papal protest in favor of the Jews."
One wonders why the New York Times heralds books that cast
Pope Pius as a racist and hypocrite. Compare New York Times book reviews,
editorials and news articles that question Pope Pius's respected reputation
with New York Times articles and editorials that praised Pius' efforts on
behalf of the Jews? Why not cite the 1943 New York Times editorial? ".This
Christmas more than ever, the Pope is a lonely voice crying out of the
silence of a continent." Pope Pius XII was widely admired. If his voice of
moral authority can be taken out of the social ratio, the media's voice is
empowered.
Testimonials abound. In 1985, Cardinal Pietro Palazzini
was honored by Israel's Yad Vashem as a "Righteous Gentile." He explicitly
stated that Pius XII ordered him to save Jews. I interviewed him in 1995.
His testimony is also clearly expressed in his memoirs.: "Amidst the clash
of arms, a voice could be heard-the voice of Pius XII. The assistance given
to so many people could not have been possible without his moral support,
which was much more than quiet consent"(Il clero e l'occupazione di Roma,
1995).
Maurizio Zarfati, a resident in Acco, Hativath Golani St.,
25/21 wrote December 7, 1994, that he was saved with his parents, brother
and sister in the monastery of the Augustinian Oblates of Santa Maria dei
Sette Dolori in via Garibaldi. To permit men to enter, the Holy Father
exempted them from rules of cloister. The Sisters gave up their rooms and
moved to restricted quarters. . There were 103 Jews.
Soldier Eliyahu Lubisky, a member of the "Kibuz Beth
Alpha," wrote on August 4, 1944, in the weekly "Hashavua," N. 178/42, that
"he found more than 10,000 Jews in Rome. The refugees praised the Vatican
for their help. Priests endangered their lives to save the Jews. The Pope
himself participated in this work of saving Jews."
Regarding the German occupation of Rome, Michael
Tagliacozzo's letter to the daily newspaper "Davàr" (Tel Aviv, April 23,
1985), states: "Little known is the precious help of the Holy See. On the
recommendation of Pius XII the religious of every order did their best to
save Jews. In great numbers, especially the elderly, women and children were
welcomed in the convents that opened their doors offering refuge and
assistance. Children in orphanges were sent to monasteries. Even in the
Vatican, almost under the Pope's windows, Jews found refuge hiding from the
clutches of the Gestapo. The figures show that about five thousand were
hiding in ecclesiastical institutions (4238 in convents, parishes and other
institutions, while 477 were living in the extraterritorial buildings
protected by the Holy See).
The Pope's peace efforts, his denunciation of Nazism, his
defense of the Jewish people, have been clearly documented. U.S. Army
Chaplain Morris Kertzer addressed four thousand Italian Jews in the Rome
synagogue and subsequently sent a report to the United States (June 9,
1944). Who can dismiss the personal testimonials by Jewish chaplains? Rabbi
André Zaoui expressed gratitude "for the immense good and incomparable
charity that Your Holiness extended generously to the Jews of Italy and
especially the children, women and elderly of the community of Rome (June
22, 1944)." Jewish military chaplains have confirmed that Catholics in
Italy, inspired by papal instruction, did much to rescue and shelter the
Jewish victims of Nazi persecution, even providing false passports for them.
Rabbi David de Sola Pool, chairman of the National Jewish Welfare Board
wrote to the Pope: "We have received reports from our army chaplains in
Italy of the aid and protection given... From the bottom of our hearts we
send you the assurances of undying gratitude."
Recently Rabbi David Dalin stated that "to deny the
legitimacy of the collective gratitude of Jews to Pius XII is tantamount to
denying their memory and experience of the Holocaust itself, as well as to
denying the credibility of their personal testimony and judgment about the
Pope's role in rescuing hundreds of thousands of Jews from certain death at
the hands of the Nazis."
It is very significant that Pope Pius XII had the nearly
unanimous praise of all his contemporaries, a fact mostly ignored by his
detractors. Most importantly, not one of the charges against him holds up
under careful analysis. He does not appeal to modern sensibilities largely
because he was always teaching the Gospel and Catholic doctrine to a world
deafened by nationalism and the drums of war. There is absolutely no
evidence that Pope Pius XII did anything wrong or stupid; there is
overwhelming evidence that he did virtually everything right, and that he
acted only after the most careful and penetrating analysis of every
possibility and after fervent prayer.
Testimonials of survivors of the Holocaust also make it
perfectly clear that the Pope was not anti-Semitic or indifferent to the
fate of the Jews and that he did everything possible to help them. In a
letter to me, dated June 18, 1997, historian and Holocaust survivor, Michael
Tagliacozzo, clearly expressed his sentiments: "In my study of the
conditions of the Jews (The Roman Community during the Nightmare of the
Swastika, November 1963), I pointed out the generous and vast activity of
the Church in favor of the victims. I learned how great was Pope Pacelli's
paternal solicitude. No honest person can discount his merits .. Pacelli was
the only one who intervened to impede the deportation of Jews on October 16,
1943, and he did very much to hide and save thousands of us. It was no small
matter that he ordered the opening of cloistered convents. Without him, many
of our own would not be alive."
Again, August 8, 2004, he reiterated his convictions: "Any
apology on the actions of Pius XII must be considered superfluous. This is
clear to all men of good will and is entrusted above all to the memory of
those Jews, now living, who have not forgotten the efforts and solicitude of
Pope Pacelli.. One must add the countless expressions of gratitude of those
whose lives were saved in the religious houses in Rome, Assisi and
elsewhere. Even if gratitude was expressed directly to the Institutions who
protected them, the merit goes to Pope Pacelli who, on October 16, 1943,
gave orders to open the doors of the parishes, convents and monasteries to
save the Jews from deportation."
Albert Einstein concluded in Time Magazine (December 23,
1940): "Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign
for suppressing the truth." There are expressions of gratitude, on the part
of Jewish chaplains and Holocaust survivors, who give witness to the
assistance and compassion of the Pope for the Jews before, during and after
the Holocaust. Among countless other Jewish authorities, Pius XII received
praise from Moshe Sharett, Israeli Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, and Pinchas
Lapide.
On April 7, 1944, Chief Rabbi Alexander Safran, of
Bucharest, Rumania, presented the following statement to Monsignor Andrea
Cassulo, Papal Nuncio to Rumania: "In the most difficult hours which we Jews
of Rumania have passed through, the generous assistance of the Holy See was
decisive and salutary. It is not easy for us to find the right words to
express the warmth and consolation we experience because of the concern of
the Supreme Pontiff who offered a large sum to relieve the sufferings of
deported Jews ¾sufferings which had been pointed out to him by you after
your visit to Transnistria. The Jews of Rumania will never forget these
facts of historic importance."
An American newspaper carried the story of the
Thanksgiving service in Rome's Jewish Temple that was heard on the radio
(July 30, 1944). The Jewish chaplain of the Fifth American Army gave a
discourse in which, among other things, he said: "If it had not been for the
truly substantial assistance and the help given to Jews by the Vatican and
by Rome's ecclesiastical authorities, hundreds of refugees and thousands of
Jewish refugees would have undoubtedly perished before Rome was liberated."
(L'Osservatore Romano, July 30, 1944).
In the summer of 1945, a petition was presented to Pope
Pius XII by twenty thousand Jewish refugees from Central Europe: "Allow us
to ask the great honor of being able to thank, personally, His Holiness for
the generosity he has shown us when we were being persecuted during the
terrible period of Nazi-Fascism."
At the end of World War II, Dr. Joseph Nathan,
representing the Hebrew Commission, addressed the Jewish community,
expressing heartfelt gratitude to those who protected and saved Jews during
the Nazi-Fascist persecutions. "Above all," he stated, "we acknowledge the
Supreme Pontiff and the religious men and women who, executing the
directives of the Holy Father, recognized the persecuted as their brothers
and, with great abnegation, hastened to help them, disregarding the terrible
dangers to which they were exposed." (L'Osservatore Romano, September 8,
1945).
Reuben Resnick, American Director of the Committee to Help
Jews in Italy, declared that "all the members of the Catholic hierarchy in
Italy, from Cardinals to Priests, saved the lives of thousands of Jews, men,
women, and children who were hosted and hidden in convents, churches, and
other religious institutions" (L'Osservatore Romano, January 5, 1946).
On April 5, 1946, the Italian Jewish community sent the
following message to His Holiness, Pius XII: "The delegates of the Congress
of the Italian Jewish Communities, held in Rome for the first time after the
Liberation, feel that it is imperative to extend reverent homage to Your
Holiness, and to express the most profound gratitude that animates all Jews
for your fraternal humanity toward them during the years of persecution when
their lives were endangered by Nazi-Fascist barbarism. Many times priests
suffered imprisonment and were sent to concentration camps, and offered
their lives to assist Jews in every way. This demonstration of goodness and
charity that still animates the just, has served to lessen the shame and
torture and sadness that afflicted millions of human beings." (L'Osservatore
Romano, April 5, 1946).
There were many demonstrations of thanks and gratitude
from the Jews saved through the assistance of Church institutions. Abramo
Giacobbe Isaia Levi, a man of renowned intellect and a Senator of the
Kingdom of Italy until the promulgation of the racial laws, was hidden in a
convent during the Nazi occupation of Rome. He and his wife later converted
to Christianity. He died in 1949 and, in his will, left a large sum of money
to help elderly and impoverished Italian Jews. His beautiful estate in the
center of Rome, Villa Levi, was renamed Villa Giorgina, in memory of his
young daughter who died prematurely. In his will he donated it to Pope Pius
XII because he had been "preserved from the dangers of evil racial
persecution, overthrower of every relationship of human life" and was
"grateful for the protection that was provided me in that turbulent period
by the Sisters of the Infant Mary."
Popes, Cardinals and Bishops have consistently praised
Pope Pius XII for his heroic leadership, his peace-making efforts and his
commitment as the defender and protector of the victims of war and hatred
which drenched Europe in blood during World War II. He was a moral beacon to
mankind. His voice was heard around the world. It was the "Voice" of a
tireless world leader whose contribution to humanity during the Holocaust is
incontrovertible. It is time for Catholics to refute the careless innuendoes
and unfounded accusations that have been leveled against Pope Pius XII whose
aspirations toward truth and goodness and his extraordinary World War II
achievements are one of the great events of our times.

Several years ago in an interview, Sir Martin Gilbert,
perhaps the foremost contemporary Jewish historian, noted that "Christians
were among the first victims of the Nazis and that the Churches took a very
powerful stand. ." On the question of Pope Pius XII's alleged silence, he
stated, "So the test for Pacelli was when the Gestapo came to Rome in 1943
to round up Jews. And the Catholic Church, on his direct authority,
immediately dispersed as many Jews as they could." After years of research
that began in 1959, Gilbert wrote Never Again: The History of the Holocaust
that contains an extraordinary chapter on Pius XII's humanitarianism. Here
Gilbert thanks the Vatican for what was done to save Jewish lives. We owe
this historian a debt of gratitude.

Marc Saperstein, professor of Jewish history and director
of the program in Judaic studies at George Washington University, clearly
stated in an article, "A Medieval and a Modern Pope" (The Washington Post,
April 1, 1998): "The suggestion that Christian doctrines or practice led
directly to the Nazi death camps is misleading and inappropriate. ... There
were limits to the capacity of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church to
prevent a world power with military domination over a continent, from
murdering the civilians it defined as its enemies. The fundamental
responsibility for the Holocaust lies with the Nazi perpetrators. Not with
Pope Pius XII. Not with the church. Not with the teachings of the Christian
faith."
One of the evils that has enveloped the media is the fact
that recent smear campaigns, mounted by misguided Jews and misinformed
Catholics, are being used in what is really an intra-Catholic argument about
the direction of the Church today. At the same time, Pius XII has unjustly
come under attack by the opposition and a great deal of misinformation about
this pontiff is being circulated. Books, articles and media reports have
leveled sweeping attacks while clearly overlooking historical sources and
factors. If he had denounced Adolf Hitler more explicitly, the Nazis would
have responded with even more ferocity. Personally and through his
representatives, Pius XII employed all the means at his disposal to save
Jews and other refugees during World War II. As a moral leader and a
diplomat forced to limit his words, he privately took action and, despite
insurmountable obstacles, saved hundreds of thousands of Jews from the gas
chambers. The Pope was loved and respected. Of those mourning his death in
1958, Jews-who credited Pius XII with being one of their greatest defenders
and benefactors in their hour of greatest need-stood in the forefront.
In the 60 plus years since World War II, overwhelming
numbers of the Jewish Community have heaped thanks and praise on Pope Pius
XII for his concern and assistance to the Jews in their difficult years. His
supporters include, but are not limited to this list: Chief Rabbi Alexander
Safran, of Bucharest, Rumania, The Jewish Advocate in Boston, Jewish
chaplain of the Fifth American Army, Dr. Joseph Nathan, representing the
Hebrew Commission, Reuben Resnick, American Director of the Committee to
Help Jews in Italy, Abramo Giacobbe Isaia Levi, Senator of the Kingdom of
Italy, Jewish scholar Jenö Levai, Moshe Sharett, Israeli Chief Rabbi Isaac
Herzog, Jewish scholar Pinchas E. Lapide, Albert Einstein, U.S. Army
Chaplain Morris Kertzer, Rabbi André Zaoui, Rabbi David de Sola Pool,
chairman of the National Jewish Welfare Board, Jewish historian and scholar
Richard Breitman, Jan Hermann and Dr. Max Pereles, from the
Ferramonti-Tarsia detention camp, Marc Saperstein, professor of Jewish
history and director of the program in Judaic studies at George Washington
University.
In particular, one must also remember that in the summer
of 1945, twenty thousand Jewish refugees from Central Europe presented the
following petition to Pope Pius XII: "Allow us to ask the great honor of
being able to thank, personally, His Holiness for the generosity he has
shown us when we were being persecuted during the terrible period of
Nazi-Fascism."
Recently, three Jews have come to the defense of Pius XII:
Rabbi David Dalin, professor of history at Ave Maria University; Historian
Sir Martin Gilbert whose books have contributed immensely to the history of
the Holocaust; Michael Tagliacozzo, historian and Holocaust survivor.
Perhaps the greatest testimony was Hitler himself who consistently
complained that Pope Pius XII was "a mouthpiece of the Jewish war
criminals."
The truth of the matter is that Pope Pius XII condemned
Hitler and protested more than 60 times. Politically the pope could do
nothing; however, in a humanitarian effort to save the lives of Jews and
other victims of Nazism, he did more than any other world leader!

Immediately after Japan declared war on the United States of America, the
order was issued to round up all Americans of Japanese ancestry and imprison
them in large camps. A declaration of war entitles any nation to imprison
its enemy and their sympathizers.
On March 24, 1933, the Jewish World Congress, then under the leadership of
Chaim Weizman, declared war on Germany on behalf of the Jews of the world.
The basic question arises; what were the Germans supposed to do with their
large Jewish population?

That second war was later made certain, not by the intentions of Hitler but
by the determination of his eternal enemies to destroy the new Germany that
he had created.
By the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919 and the Treaty of St. Germain on
20 September of the same year, the German people were thoroughly humiliated.
The British Prime Minister, Lloyd George, wrote:
'The international bankers swept statesmen, politicians, journalists and
jurists all to one side and issued their orders with the imperiousness of
absolute monarchs.'
However, the Four Nations Pact was not to be. The Jews put an end to this,
for on 7 November 1938, a few weeks after the Munich Agreement and shortly
before the journey to Paris of the German Foreign Minister, Von Ribbentrop,
the Polish Jew, Herschel Feibel Grynszpan murdered the German Third
Secretary of State, Ernst von Rath, in the German Embassy in Paris. The five
bullets fired were the logical result of the Jews' declaration of war on
Germany of March 1933 and put an end to the effort being made to explain and
extend the importance of the Munich Agreement and the revision of the Treaty
of Versailles.
This assassination provoked anti-Jewish riots in Germany, with the burning
of synagogues and the looting and burning of Jewish shops. The anti-Jewish
riots inflamed public opinion in Great Britain and the USA against
Chamberlain's efforts to relieve Anglo-German tension. In the United States
Germans were assaulted and persecuted. The Jews began leaving Germany.
The Paris magazine L'Ami du Peuple wrote about them:
'These people fled from Germany because they attempted to set up a rule of
fire and blood and to let loose the horrors of civil war and universal
chaos.'
The American Secretary of State, James Forrestal, who later died in
mysterious circumstances, wrote in his Forrestal Diaries (Cassel and Co.,
London 1952):
'Have played golf with Joe Kennedy [US Ambassador in Britain, father of
President John Kennedy]. According to him, Chamberlain declared that Zionism
and world Jewry have obliged England to enter the war.'
The Jew, Schlomo Asch, in a pep talk to French troops in the line in Le
Nouvelles Litteraires (10 February 1940) wrote:
'This is our war and you are fighting it for us. Even if we Jews are not
bodily in the trenches we are nevertheless morally with you.'
On 8 October 1942 Sentinel magazine stated unequivocally:
'The Second World War is being fought for the defence and fundamentals of
Judaism.'

No Documentary Evidence
Many thousands of secret German documents dealing with Auschwitz were
confiscated after the war by the Allies. Not a single one refers to a
policy or program of extermination. In fact, the extermination story cannot
be reconciled with the documentary evidence.
Many Jewish Inmates Unable to Work
It is often claimed that all Jews at Auschwitz who were unable to work were
immediately killed. Jews who were too old, young, sick, or weak were
supposedly gassed on arrival, and only those who could be worked to death
were temporarily kept alive.
But the evidence shows that, in fact, a very high percentage of the Jewish
inmates were not able to work, and were nevertheless not killed. For
example, an internal German telex message dated Sept. 4, 1943, from the
chief of the Labor Allocation department of the SS Economic and
Administrative Main Office (WVHA), reported that of 25,000 Jewish inmates
in Auschwitz, only 3,581 were able to work, and that all of the remaining
Jewish inmates -- some 21,500, or about 86 percent -- were unable to work.

This is also confirmed in a secret report dated April 5, 1944, on "security
measures in Auschwitz" by Oswald Pohl, head of the SS concentration camp
system, to SS chief Heinrich Himmler. Pohl reported that there was a total
of 67,000 inmates in the entire Auschwitz camp complex, of whom 18,000 were
hospitalized or disabled. In the Auschwitz II camp (Birkenau), supposedly
the main extermination center, there were 36,000 inmates, mostly female, of
whom "approximately 15,000 are unable to work." [10]
These two documents simply cannot be reconciled with the Auschwitz
extermination story.
The evidence shows that Auschwitz-Birkenau was established primarily as a
camp for Jews who were not able to work, including the sick and elderly, as
well as for those who were temporarily awaiting assignment to other camps.
That's the considered view of Dr. Arthur Butz of Northwestern University,
who also says that this was the reason for the unusually high death rate
there. [11]
Princeton University history professor Arno Mayer, who is Jewish,
acknowledges in his 1989 book about the "final solution" that more Jews
perished at Auschwitz as a result of typhus and other "natural" causes than
were executed. [12]
Anne Frank
Perhaps the best known Auschwitz inmate was Anne Frank, who is known around
the world for her famous diary. But few people know that thousands of Jews,
including Anne and her father, Otto Frank, "survived" Auschwitz.
The 15-year-old girl and her father were deported from the Netherlands to
Auschwitz in September 1944. Several weeks later, in the face of the
advancing Soviet army, Anne was evacuated along with many other Jews to the
Bergen-Belsen camp, where she died of typhus in March 1945.
Her father came down with typhus in Auschwitz and was sent to the camp
hospital to recover. He was one of thousands of sick and feeble Jews who
were left behind when the Germans abandoned the camp in January 1945,
shortly before it was overrun by the Soviets. He died in Switzerland in
1980.
If the German policy had been to kill Anne Frank and her father, they would
not have survived Auschwitz. Their fate, tragic though it was, cannot be
reconciled with the extermination story.
Allied Propaganda
The Auschwitz gassing story is based in large part on the hearsay statements
of former Jewish inmates who did not personally see any evidence of
extermination. Their beliefs are understandable, because rumors about
gassings at Auschwitz were widespread.
Allied planes dropped large numbers of leaflets, written in Polish and
German, on Auschwitz and the surrounding areas which claimed that people
were being gassed in the camp. The Auschwitz gassing story, which was an
important part of the Allied wartime propaganda effort, was also broadcast
to Europe by Allied radio stations. [13]
Survivor Testimony
Former inmates have confirmed that they saw no evidence of extermination at
Auschwitz.
An Austrian woman, Maria Vanherwaarden, testified about her camp experiences
in a Toronto District Court in March 1988. She was interned in
Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942 for having sexual relations with a Polish forced
laborer. On the train trip to the camp, a Gypsy woman told her and the
others that they would all be gassed at Auschwitz.
Upon arrival, Maria and the other women were ordered to undress and go into
a large concrete room without windows to take a shower. The terrified women
were sure that they were about to die. But then, instead of gas, water came
out of the shower heads.
Auschwitz was no vacation center, Maria confirmed. She witnessed the death
of many fellow inmates by disease, particularly typhus, and quite a few
committed suicide. But she saw no evidence at all of mass killings,
gassings, or of any extermination program. [14]
A Jewish woman named Marika Frank arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau from Hungary
in July 1944, when 25,000 Jews were supposedly gassed and cremated daily.
She likewise testified after the war that she heard and saw nothing of "gas
chambers" during the time she was interned there. She heard the gassing
stories only later. [15]
Inmates Released
More than 200,000 prisoners were transferred from Auschwitz to other camps,
and about 8,000 were in the camp when it was liberated by Soviet forces. In
addition, about 1,500 prisoners who had served their sentences were
released, and returned to their home countries. [16] If Auschwitz had
actually been a top secret extermination center, would the Germans have
released inmates who "knew" what was happening there?
Himmler Orders Death Rate Reduced
In response to the deaths of many inmates due to disease, especially typhus,
the German authorities responsible for the camps ordered firm
counter-measures.
The head of the SS camp administration office sent a directive dated Dec.
28, 1942, to Auschwitz and the other concentration camps. It sharply
criticized the high death rate of inmates due to disease, and ordered
that "camp physicians must use all means at their disposal to significantly
reduce the death rate in the various camps." Furthermore, it ordered:
"The camp doctors must supervise more often than in the past the nutrition
of the prisoners and, in cooperation with the administration, submit
improvement recommendations to the camp commandants ... The camp doctors
are to see to it that the working conditions at the various labor places
are improved as much as possible."
Finally, the directive stressed that "the Reichsfuhrer SS [Heinrich Himmler]
has ordered that the death rate absolutely must be reduced." [17]
Telltale Aerial Photos
Detailed aerial reconnaissance photographs taken of Auschwitz-Birkenau on
several random days in 1944 (during the height of the alleged extermination
period there) were made public by the CIA in 1979. These photos show no
trace of piles of corpses, smoking crematory chimneys or masses of Jews
awaiting death, things that have been repeatedly alleged, and all of which
would have been clearly visible if Auschwitz had been the extermination
center it is said to have been. [18]
Absurd Cremation Claims
Cremation specialists have confirmed that thousands of corpses could not
possibly have been cremated every day throughout the spring and summer of
1944 at Auschwitz, as commonly alleged.
For example, Mr. Ivan Lagace, manager of a large crematory in Calgary,
Canada, testified in court in April 1988 that the Auschwitz cremation story
is technically impossible. The allegation that 10,000 or even 20,000
corpses were burned every day at Auschwitz in the summer of 1944 in
crematories and open pits is simply "preposterous" and "beyond the realm of
reality," he declared under oath. [19]
Gassing Expert Refutes Extermination Story
America's leading gas chamber expert, Fred A. Leuchter, carefully examined
the supposed "gas chambers" in Poland and concluded that the Auschwitz
gassing story is absurd and technically impossible.
Leuchter is the foremost specialist on the design and installation of gas
chambers used in the United States to execute convicted criminals. For
example, he designed a gas chamber facility for the Missouri state
penitentiary.
In February 1988 he carried out a detailed onsite examination of the "gas
chambers" at Auschwitz, Birkenau and Majdanek in Poland, which are either
still standing or only partially in ruins. In sworn testimony to a Toronto
court and in a technical report, Leuchter described every aspect of his
investigation.
He concluded by emphatically declaring that the alleged gassing facilities
could not possibly have been used to kill people. Among other things, he
pointed out that the so-called "gas chambers" were not properly sealed or
vented to kill human beings without also killing German camp personnel.

Dr. William B. Lindsey, a research chemist employed for 33 years by the
Dupont Corporation, likewise testified in a 1985 court case that the
Auschwitz gassing story is technically impossible. Based on a careful
on-site examination of the "gas chambers" at Auschwitz, Birkenau and
Majdanek, and on his years of experience, he declared: "I have come to the
conclusion that no one was willfully or purposefully killed with Zyklon B
[hydrocyanic acid gas] in this manner. I consider it absolutely
impossible." [21]

TERROR BOMBING
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had given an assurance that:
'The British Government would never resort to the deliberate attack on women
and children and other civilians for the purpose of mere terrorism.'
However, his successor Winston Churchill appointed as his personal adviser
the Jew Professor Lindemann. Lindemann, later Lord Cherwell, suggested the
bombing of German cities and that working class areas were legitimate
targets, and from then onwards the last vestiges of civilised decency in
warfare were abandoned. These bombings began on 10 August 1940 with the
bombing of the small open town of Freiburg on the Swiss frontier.
Fifty-three civilians were killed, including twenty children playing in the
park. It was reported by Mr. Taylor of the American Red Cross in the New
York Times of 3 May 1940. This was before the Germans began bombing British
cities. Mr. J. M. Speight, CBE, Principal Secretary to the Air Ministry,
wrote in his book The Splendid Decision:
'Adolf Hitler only undertook the bombing of British civilian targets
reluctantly after the RAF had commenced bombing German civilian targets...
It gave Coventry, Birmingham, Sheffield and Southampton the right to look
Kiev, Kharkov, Stalingrad and Sebastopol in the face. Our Soviet allies
would have been less critical of our inactivity if they had understood what
we had done... Hitler would have been willing at my time to stop the
slaughter. Hitler was genuinely anxious to reach with Britain an agreement
confining the action of aircraft to battle zones.'

On that same day, 24 March 1933, on the front page of the London Daily
Express appeared the main headlines: "Judaea declares war on Germany: Jews
of all the world unite", and followed with:

on Germany. The appearance of the Swastika as the symbol of the new Germany
revives the old war symbol of the Jews. Fourteen million Jews stand as one
body to declare war on Germany. The Jewish wholesale dealer leaves his
business, the banker his bank, the shopkeeper his shop, the beggar his
miserable hut in order to combine forces in the holy war against Hitler's
people.'
The German government was removing Jews from influential positions and
transferring power back to the German people. This declaration of war by the
Jews on Germany was repeated throughout the world. The first boycott of
Jewish business concerns came after this Jewish declaration of war in April
1933.

The Zionist Federation of Germany (ZVfD), an organisation representing a
tiny minority of German Jews, was selected by the Nazis as the body to
represent the Jews of the Reich.
The best example of this was the 'Transfer Agreement' of 1934. Immediately
after the Nazi takeover in 1933, Jews all over the world supported or were
organising a world wide boycott of German goods. This campaign hurt the Nazi
regime and the German authorities searched frantically for a way disabling
the boycott. It was clear that if Jews and Jewish organisations were to pull
out, the campaign would collapse.
This problem was solved by the ZVfD. A letter sent to the Nazi party as
early as 21.6.33, outlined the degree of agreement that existed between the
two organisations on the questions of race, nation, and the nature of the
'Jewish problem', and it offered to collaborate with the new regime:
In their eagerness to gain credence and the backing of the new regime, the
Zionist organisation managed to undermine the boycott. The main public act
was the signature of the 'Transfer Agreement' with the Nazi authorities
during the Zionist Congress of 1934. In essence, the agreement was designed
to get Germany's Jews out of the country and into Mandate Palestine. It
provided a possibility for Jews to take a sizeable part of their property
out of the country, through a transfer of German goods to Palestine. This
right was denied to Jews leaving for any other destination (emphasis - ED).
The Zionist Organisation was the acting agent, through its financial
organisations. This agreement operated on a number of fronts 'helping' Jews
to leave the country, breaking the ring of the boycott, exporting German
goods in large quantities to Palestine, and last but not least, enabling the
regime to be seen as humane and reasonable even towards its avowed enemies,
the Jews. After all, they argued, the Jews do not belong in Europe and now
the Jews come and agree with them.
After news of the agreement broke, the boycott was doomed. If the Zionist
Organisation found it possible and necessary to deal with the Nazis, and
import their goods, who could argue for a boycott? This was not the first
time that the interests of both movements were presented to the German
public as complementary. Baron Von Mildenstein, the first head of the Jewish
Department of the SS, later followed by Eichmann, was invited to travel to
Palestine. This he did in early 1933, in the company of a Zionist leader,
Kurt Tuchler. Having spent six months in Palestine, he wrote a series of
favourable articles in Der Sturmer describing the 'new Jew' of Zionism, a
Jew Nazis could accept and understand.
The declared enemy was now right in the middle of their country. Bankers,
industrialists, media moguls, movie producers, merchants, and others,
overnight became enemies of Germany.
No nation in the world would have allowed their declared enemies to freely
roam around the country. The Germans, however, never implemented measures
against the Jews as drastic as the United States did with their Japanese
citizens.

Germany." To illustrate the true "fate of the Jews," one has to look at some
of the prominent Jewish leaders living in Germany at the time.
These are very important questions, because so many prominent Jews survived
the alleged Holocaust. Simon Wiesenthal, Eli Wiesel, Leo Baeck, Max
Nussbaum, and so many more like them. As a matter of fact, approximately 4.5
million Jews "survived."
Why did Rabbi Baeck never leave the Third Reich, the land of concentration
camps and "gas chambers," with all the other 300,000 German Jews who were
allowed to leave for more lucrative lands?
By all accounts, Rabbi Dr. Leo Baeck must have had a very comfortable
existence under the National Socialist Government in Germany. Born in 1873
in Posen, he became a Rabbi in 1897 in Oppeln/Silesia. Interestingly, he was
a Rabbi in Berlin from 1912 until 1943, when he himself was interned at the
Theresienstadt camp, a camp where most of the prominent Jews and resistance
activists were housed. After the war Leo Baeck immigrated to England.
Why did Rabbi Baeck never leave the Third Reich, the land of concentration
camps and "gas chambers," with all the other 300,000 German Jews who were
allowed to leave for more lucrative lands?
Another question should be put to all those false Holocaust "experts" by
asking them how many Jews were gassed in Dachau? As a matter of fact, no one
was ever "gassed" in Germany, or in territories under German control, as has
been established in court
In Schuld und Schicksal (Guilt and Fate) Burg dealt with the Warsaw and Lodz
ghettos. When the German troops occupied Warsaw, they wanted to concentrate
the Jewish population. Real ghettos had been there for centuries but the
assimilated or emancipated Jews had lived far way from the ghettos. Now the
Germans wanted to have the Jews all together. In a practical sense, the
ghetto was also organized for the protection of the Jewish population.

The Zionists were happy with this arrangement. An appointed Jewish Council
was the governing body of the ghetto. They had their own police, jails and
everything else. Naturally, there were some who were cruel. One of these was
the vice president of the police, who was later executed. In Burg's eyes,
this execution was evidence that Jews defended themselves against the
minority of Zionists who were using the majority of Jews for their own

Then, when hundreds of thousands of civilians died in massive Allied bombing
raids against German civilians ... and only then ... Rabbi Baeck got out.
And where did he go? To Theresienstadt, because the concentration camp was
never bombed by the Allies, and was the safest place for a Jew to be.

It must have been relatively easy to leave Germany. Max Nussbaum, Chief
Rabbi of Berlin until 1940 (who later became Chief Rabbi of Beverly Hills,
CA), immigrated to New York at the advice of Rabbi Stephen Wise. Did Rabbi
Wise already know of the coming war between the United States and Germany in
1940?
One must assume that Rabbi Baeck knew about Rabbi Nussbaum's plan to move to
New York, but again Baeck remained in Berlin. A riddle to be sure, unless
the horrors of Nazism were not that horrible for the Jews after all.

Until the early 1970s two different sets of arithmetic books were used in

historical aid. She retained her post only after humbly promising not to do
this again.
Nonetheless, it came into force on April 1, 1978, prohibiting the offering
of ¡§material inducement¡¨ for a person to change his religion. A material

The Real Issue Is Israel's Human Rights Record:
A statement by Norman G. Finkelstein upon publication of Beyond Chutzpah
Professor Alan Dershowitz of Harvard University is currently best known for
his advocacy of the "most excruciating" torture against terrorist suspects
such as a "needle being shoved under the fingernails." The alleged purpose
of this torture is to extract a truthful confession but its real
consequence, as human rights organizations have pointed out, is to produce
whatever statements are necessary to end the suffering. For 15 months
Dershowitz has applied a variant of this truth-seeking technique -- less
physically painful but no less excruciating -- to prospective publishers of
Beyond Chutzpah, which offers a critical examination of Israel's human
rights record and Dershowitz's defense of it. Enlisting one of the most
powerful law firms in the country after his personal initiatives proved
unsuccessful, Dershowitz has repeatedly threatened to bankrupt highly
respected publishers with litigation if they didn't cancel publication of my
book. He could then proclaim that the cancellation confirmed the "truth"
that Beyond Chutzpah didn't meet scholarly standards.
Dershowitz justified these blackmail tactics on the ground that Beyond
Chutzpah libels him. Yet, when I first began to expose his gross scholarly
misconduct, Dershowitz publicly declared at UCLA (on 21 October 2003) that
he wouldn't respond with a libel action because he believed "so strongly in
the First Amendment and full freedom of speech." Ironically, just as he was
threatening my publishers with expensive and time-consuming lawsuits,
Dershowitz denounced Holocaust denier David Irving, who had sued Deborah
Lipstadt for libel, with these words: "Before Irving lost his case [against
Lipstadt], several publishers had refused to issue books critical of Irving,
out of fear of his bringing expensive and time-consuming lawsuits. That was
a chilling of free speech" (Afterword to Lipstadt's History on Trial; his
emphasis).
My publisher, University of California Press, was understandably at great
pains to fend off a potential lawsuit by Dershowitz; for an academic
publisher the associated costs would have been ruinous, to the point of
making certain victory meaningless. On occasion our relationship became
strained and at one point it appeared as if we had reached an impasse.
However, through the skillful mediation of Nation magazine senior editor
Roane Carey (who was the freelance editor of Beyond Chutzpah) and others, a
satisfactory compromise was reached that protected the interests of both
publisher and author, and, most importantly, preserved the integrity of the
book. I would like personally to extend my heartfelt thanks to all who
supported me and the press during this difficult period.

that involving Rudolf Kastner.

Those who have, are generally under the impression that
there is some "controversy" about negotiations he undertook
for "the purchase of Jewish lives for money and military
equipment," but that he was "fully rehabilitated" by the
Supreme Court of Israel.
The Accusations
Briefly, the accusations against Kastner are as follows:
Dr. Rudolf Verba, a Doctor of Science now serving at the
British Medical Research Council, was one of the few
escapees from Auschwitz. In his memoirs published in
February, 1961, in the London Daily Herald, he wrote:
I am a Jew. In spite of that - indeed because of that -
I accuse certain Jewish leaders of one of the most ghastly
deeds of the war.
While I was prisoner number 44070 at Auschwitz - the number is still on my
arm
Eichmann not only agreed, but dressed Kastner up in S.S.
uniform and took him to Belsen to trace some of his friends.
Nor did the sordid bargaining end there.
Kastner paid Eichmann several thousand dollars. With this
little fortune, Eichmann was able to buy his way to freedom
when Germany collapsed, to set himself up in the Argentine...

These accusations are confirmed by the "Eichmann Confessions"
published in Life magazine, 28 November and 5 December 1960:
"I resolved to show how well a job could be done when the
commander stands 100% behind it. By shipping the Jews off
in a lightning operation, I wanted to set an example for
future campaigns elsewhere...In obedience to Himmler's
directive I now concentrated on negotiations with the Jewish
political officials in Budapest...Among them, Dr. Rudolph Kastner,
authorized representative of the Zionist Movement.
This Dr. Kastner was a young man about my age, an ice-cold
lawyer and a fanatical Zionist. He agreed to help keep the
Jews from resisting deportation - and even keep order in the
collection camps - if I could close my eyes and let a few
hundred or a few thousand young Jews emigrate illegally to
Palestine. It was a good bargain. For keeping order in the
camps, the price...was not too high for me.
"...We trusted each other perfectly. When he was with me,
Kastner smoked cigarets as though he were in a coffeehouse.
While we talked he would smoke one aromatic cigaret after
another, taking them from a silver case and lighting them
with a silver lighter. With his great polish and reserve
he would have made an ideal Gestapo officer himself.
"Dr. Kastner's main concern was to make it possible for
a select group of Hungarian Jews to emigrate to Palestune...
"As a matter of fact, there was a very strong similarity
between our attitudes in the S.S. and the viewpoint of these
immensely idealistic Zionist leaders....I believe that Kastner
would have sacrificed a thousand or a hundred thousand of his
blood to achieve his political goal...
'You can have the others', he would say, 'but let me have
this group here'. And because Kastner rendered us a great
service by helping keep the deportation camps peaceful, I
would let his groups escape. After all, I was not
concerned with small groups of a thousand or so Jews...
That was the 'gentleman's agreement' I had with Kastner."

Quite clearly these accusations, whether true or false,
do not relate merely to "the purchase of Jewish lives for
money and military equipment."
Are the accusations against Kastner true?
According to the Government of Israel, they are a lie.
When Malchiel Greenwald, a strongly pro-Zionist Israeli
citizen published these accusations against Kastner, the
Israeli Government did rather more than demand that his
views should not be broadcast. Because a prominent Zionist
official Dr. Kastner was a spokesman for the Ministry of
Trade and Industry) was involved, the Attorney General
of the State of Israel prosecuted Greenwald for criminal libel.

That is exactly the line taken by Dr. John Foster, the Victorian
Jewish Board of Deputies expert witness, in his evidence condemning
3CR for anti-semitism.
It is quite clear from this evidence, that Dr. Foster does not know
anything at all about the Kastner case, since he does not even know
what Kastner was accused of.
This may not be his fault however, since one cannot read an accurate
account of the Kastner case in any of the widely available works dealing
with the Holocaust, either in bookshops or libraries. Apart from 3CR, the
suppression of information has been so complete, that even an expert
like Dr. Foster, specifically asked to give evidence on the matter, has
been unable to find out what it is all about.
Maurice Bardeche, a French fascist, asserted that people had died in
concentration camps, not because they were murdered, but due to war-related
events. He wrote that the expression, 'the Final Solution of the Jewish
problem' meant, for the Germans, that the Jews would be transferred to
ghettos in Eastern Europe. Bardeche claimed the gas chambers were used to
'disinfect' the concentration camps' inmates, not kill them!
"Another Frenchman, Paul Rassinier, a pre-war communist and later a
socialist, had been a member of the French Resistance. He was arrested and
interned in concentration camps, among them Buchenwald. In 1948 he published
a book Crossing the Line, in which he argued that people might have been
killed in concentration camps, but that the perpetrators had acted on their
own, not on orders from headquarters.
Read the Red Cross reports. Go to the Red Cross museum, headquarters
in your city and pick up the records. Anyway theres a few independent
witnesses.

broadcast on the Public Broadcast System (PBS - KENW-TV) said that when

It is forensically impractical or impossible to exterminate millions with
louse disinfestant (hydrogen cyanide gas)
or diesel exhaust as alleged by malicious "witnesses" or tortured
confessors. There are no written orders for
extermination. Aerial reconnaissance photographs of the concentration camps
show no smoke and flames
belching from the crematoria and pyres as alleged. The photos and records
show there was not enough coke or
crematoria to cremate millions of corpses. The "witnesses" and confessors
lied about how many minutes it takes
to cremate a corpse. Diesel exhaust does not contain significant amount of
carbon monoxide to kill a human. If
the Nazis wanted to kill millions they could have driven the coal fired
train into a tunnel or quonset hut and gassed
'em with the exhaust from the locomotive or used the exhaust from the
crematoria. At Auschwitz, during a typhus
epidemic, up to 300 people died per day, hence the crematoria, shaving of
heads and requisitions for tons of
Zyklon B louse disinfestant. HCN is a very dangerous, impractical, messy
method for extermination.

For 45 years was posted at Auschwitz an excepted figure at Nurenberg
trial of 4 million death. 1990 it was changed to 1.1 million, based on
transportation figures, all most 3 million difference.
But the over all 6 million total Jewish death death has not changed.

Some indeed died by disease, old age and accidents of war.
Most did at the end of war, thanks to the Allie efficient bombing of
railroad transportation.

Not true! Jews were put to labor camps, for security reason and later to
move them to Palestine or Madagascar.

have refuted this distorted portrayal of world history: Martin Gilbert,
Michael Tagliacozzo, and David Dalin. All three have taken issue with

Goldhagen, John Cornwell, James Carroll and other writers of the past

As I pointed out in my own books during the past decade,
why would German leaders state: "The Pope has repudiated the National
Socialist New European Order. and makes himself the mouthpiece of the
Jewish
war criminals." When Pius XII learned about the Nazi round-up on October
16,
1943, why did he immediately send an official, personal protest through
the
papal Secretary of State Cardinal Luigi Maglione to German Ambassador
Ernst
von Weizsäcker? This protest was published in the Vatican's official
"Actes." Why did the Pope provide false identification papers to
potential
victims? Why did he order Vatican buildings, churches, convents and
monasteries to open their doors and find hiding places for Jews and other
refugees? Why would Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir state: "When
fearful
martyrdom came to our people in the decade of Nazi terror, the voice of
the
Pope was raised for the victims." Albert Einstein stated. "Only the Church
stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing the
truth." (Time Magazine, 1940)
How long will honest scholars condone statements by
those
who defame Pope Pius XII? Today even hardened detractors of Pius XII
generally consider that, throughout the Second World War, the pope was
hailed as a towering moral hero in the face of cataclysmic terror: a man
solicitous on behalf of Jews and Gentiles alike who worked tirelessly for
peace. Through diplomacy, personal contact with Heads of State, and the
underground railroad, he protected the Jews and other victims of the Nazis
in a way that no other leader with mighty war weapons could provide. His
charity and love prevailed.
No Pope throughout history did more than Pope John Paul
II
to create closer relations with the Jewish community, to oppose
anti-Semitism, and to make certain that the evils of the Holocaust never
occur again. Relations between the Catholic Church and Jewish people are
marked by mutual respect and understanding. Pope John Paul II visited the
Chief Rabbi at the Synagogue in Rome in 1986 and declared that "the Jews
are
our dearly beloved brothers," and indeed "our elder brothers in faith." He
established full diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the State
of
Israel. A survivor of both Nazi and Communist oppression himself, John
Paul
II has consistently praised Pope Pius XII for his heroic leadership during
World War II, and led the cause for his canonization. His successor,
Benedict XVI, has followed in his footsteps.
During the early part of the nineteenth century, pogroms
were going on in Poland. On December 30, 1915, the American Jewish
Committee
appealed to Pope Benedict XV to use his moral influence and speak out
against anti-Semitism. Eugenio Pacelli, who was working in the Vatican
Secretariate of State, was deeply involved in the preparation of a
pro-Jewish document signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Gasparri
(February 9, 1916). This statement appeared in the New York Times, April
17,
1916 under the headline: "Papal Bull Urges Equality for Jews." It was
printed in Civiltà Cattolica, April 28, 1916, v. 2, pp. 358-359, and in
The
Tablet, April 29, 1916 v. 127, p. 565.
Twenty years later, during his 1936 visit to America,
Cardinal Pacelli met with two officials of the American Jewish Committee,
Lewis Strauss and Joseph Proskauer, and re-affirmed Benedict XV's
condemnation of anti-Semitism, promising to make its teaching better
known.
These facts are found in the archives of the American Jewish Committee,
and
are documented by Naomi Cohen, in her official history of the AJC, Not
Free
to Desist: A History of the American Jewish Committee, 1906-1966, The
Jewish
Publication Society of America (Philadelphia, 1972, pp. 180, 214-215, 578,
section vii).
Pius XII was sympathetic to Zionism and the creation of
a
Jewish state, both before and after he was Pontiff, as a number of works
have shown: Three Popes and the Jews by Pinchas Lapide (1967); The Papacy
and the Middle East (1986); and Christian Attitudes Toward the State of
Israel by Paul Charles Merkley (2002). (The last fifty years of conflict
in
the region seem to confirm Pius XII's fears of ethnic resentments and
hatreds.) On July 30, 1944, Pius XII told the newly-appointed high
commissioner for Palestine "of his intention not to interfere with the
Jewish aspiration to create a national State in Palestine, saying that he
was animated with great sympathy for the Jews." (The Tablet of London,
Oct.
25, 1958.) And in 1945, during a meeting with Jewish survivors of the
Holocaust, Pius XII told his Jewish audience approvingly: "Soon, you will
have a Jewish state." (The Jerusalem Post, October 10, 1958)
Recent followers of the anti-Pius XII myth, Susan
Zuccotti
(Under His Very Windows), Michael Phayer (The Catholic Church and the
Holocaust) and David Kertzer (The Popes Against the Jews) make no mention
of
compelling documents that vindicate Pope Pius XII. The evidence in Actes
et
Documents (Libreria Editrice Vaticana) points to Pius XII's ceaseless
activities for Peace. He was against Racism, Nationalism, Anti-Semitism
and
War. His efforts were on behalf of the persecuted: Jews, the homeless,
widows, orphans, prisoners of war. It is important to note: 1. The Holy
See's February 9, 1916 condemnation of anti-Semitism, which Eugenio
Pacelli
(the future Pius XII), then working in the Secretary of State's office,
helped formulate. 2. The January 22, 1943 report written by the Nazi's
Reich
Central Security Office, which condemned Pius XII's 1942 Christmas Address
for "clearly speaking on behalf of the Jews" and which accused the Pontiff
of being a "mouthpiece of the Jewish War Criminals." 3. The Nazi plan,
reported in the July 5, 1998 issue of the Milan newspaper Il Giornale,
which
described Hilter's plan to "massacre Pius XII with the entire Vatican,"
because of the "Papal protest in favor of the Jews."
One wonders why the New York Times heralds books that
cast
Pope Pius as a racist and hypocrite. Compare New York Times book reviews,
editorials and news articles that question Pope Pius's respected
reputation
with New York Times articles and editorials that praised Pius' efforts on
behalf of the Jews? Why not cite the 1943 New York Times editorial? ".This
Christmas more than ever, the Pope is a lonely voice crying out of the
silence of a continent." Pope Pius XII was widely admired. If his voice of
moral authority can be taken out of the social ratio, the media's voice is
empowered.
Testimonials abound. In 1985, Cardinal Pietro Palazzini
was honored by Israel's Yad Vashem as a "Righteous Gentile." He explicitly
stated that Pius XII ordered him to save Jews. I interviewed him in 1995.
His testimony is also clearly expressed in his memoirs.: "Amidst the clash
of arms, a voice could be heard-the voice of Pius XII. The assistance
given
to so many people could not have been possible without his moral support,
which was much more than quiet consent"(Il clero e l'occupazione di Roma,
1995).
Maurizio Zarfati, a resident in Acco, Hativath Golani
St.,
25/21 wrote December 7, 1994, that he was saved with his parents, brother
and sister in the monastery of the Augustinian Oblates of Santa Maria dei
Sette Dolori in via Garibaldi. To permit men to enter, the Holy Father
exempted them from rules of cloister. The Sisters gave up their rooms and
moved to restricted quarters. . There were 103 Jews.
Soldier Eliyahu Lubisky, a member of the "Kibuz Beth
Alpha," wrote on August 4, 1944, in the weekly "Hashavua," N. 178/42, that
"he found more than 10,000 Jews in Rome. The refugees praised the Vatican
for their help. Priests endangered their lives to save the Jews. The Pope
himself participated in this work of saving Jews."
Regarding the German occupation of Rome, Michael
Tagliacozzo's letter to the daily newspaper "Davàr" (Tel Aviv, April 23,
1985), states: "Little known is the precious help of the Holy See. On the
recommendation of Pius XII the religious of every order did their best to
save Jews. In great numbers, especially the elderly, women and children
were
welcomed in the convents that opened their doors offering refuge and
assistance. Children in orphanges were sent to monasteries. Even in the
Vatican, almost under the Pope's windows, Jews found refuge hiding from
the
clutches of the Gestapo. The figures show that about five thousand were
hiding in ecclesiastical institutions (4238 in convents, parishes and
other
institutions, while 477 were living in the extraterritorial buildings
protected by the Holy See).
The Pope's peace efforts, his denunciation of Nazism,
his
defense of the Jewish people, have been clearly documented. U.S. Army
Chaplain Morris Kertzer addressed four thousand Italian Jews in the Rome
synagogue and subsequently sent a report to the United States (June 9,
1944). Who can dismiss the personal testimonials by Jewish chaplains?
Rabbi
André Zaoui expressed gratitude "for the immense good and incomparable
charity that Your Holiness extended generously to the Jews of Italy and
especially the children, women and elderly of the community of Rome (June
22, 1944)." Jewish military chaplains have confirmed that Catholics in
Italy, inspired by papal instruction, did much to rescue and shelter the
Jewish victims of Nazi persecution, even providing false passports for
them.
Rabbi David de Sola Pool, chairman of the National Jewish Welfare Board
wrote to the Pope: "We have received reports from our army chaplains in
Italy of the aid and protection given... From the bottom of our hearts we
send you the assurances of undying gratitude."
Recently Rabbi David Dalin stated that "to deny the
legitimacy of the collective gratitude of Jews to Pius XII is tantamount
to
denying their memory and experience of the Holocaust itself | |
