Unauthorized Reproduction bill has been drafted |
"Republican lawmakers are drafting new legislation that will make
marriage a requirement for motherhood in the state of Indiana,
including specific criminal penalties for unmarried women who do
become pregnant "by means other than sexual intercourse.""
http://www.boomantribune.com/?op=displaystory;sid=2005/10/3/223530/406
I found this one on stupidevilbastard.com. And, just like Les, I have
to say, "WTF?!?!".

The actual legislation was intended to keep single people and homosexuals from
using medical procedures to get pregnant - and fortunately, State Senator
Patricia Miller (R) dropped that Wednesday. (In Indiana, when the General
Assembly isn't in session, committees can be formed to discuss possible
legislation to be presented when the Assembly next convenes. Miller was
intending to have this presented to the Assembly in January.)

You know how much it costs to do in vitro fertilization?
Now we see how it costs more to have children via this method than via
convetional sexual reproduction and birthing.
I guess the sperm banks and the sperm donors union are in a tizzy over this
one.

it's not an issue for me.

Indeed. And what the legislatures are forgetting is that residents can
go to neighboring states to get the procedure done if they want to
anyway. Out of state large cities that are reasonably close include
Cincinnati, Louisville, Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Lansing, and Dayton.
The only area that would be fairly weak in this respect is from around
Evansville up about 2/3s the length of the state north, and central
Indiana, although Dayton is only 1 1/2 hours east of Indy.
This is indeed a very stupid law. I hope it dies in committee, or does
not pass the House.

Neither of those cities are very large. I think that they smaller than
Evansville. Any facilities that are meant to deal with artificial
insemination of people on a regular basis needs a decent size
population base to work with. That is why I specified larger cities.
Lansing, while not that large, is still the state capital of Michigan
and near several good universities, so it is worth considering.

Actually, I would not be copping out on my constituents, because no
location's constituents are monolithic. Also, legislators need to do
what is beast for the city/state/nation as a whole, and placing more
