The Watergate tapes were what brought Nixon down, not Woodward or
Bernstein's stories. All of Nixon's aides were indicted for hindering
the investigation (spurred by the tapes, witnesses who overheard
conversations from the White House, and the people who were arrested
at the break doing wiretaps), so naturally he would have been next.
The tape released in '72 was called "the smoking gun."
Here's the scandal in a sad little nutshell, and you can see that W &
B had very little to do with the causes and effects.
