Object: Very off topic.....price of gas in your area
I keep seeing the price of a barrel of oil rising daily.........around here I
am paying $1.88 for a gallon of regular unleaded and $2.08 for a gallon of
diesel....and I am in the Bryan/College Station area of Texas. I have never
seen diesel fuel that high--my truck, a 3/4 ton Dodge, has a 36 gallon fuel
tank, I spent close to $60 filling it up last Thursday. It had about a 1/4
tank in it. When I went to Katy, Texas for a horseshow over the weekend, I saw
diesel fuel about 2 cents higher and unleaded gasoline about 3 cents lower and
Katy is a rather high dollar neighborhood. Just curious what the rest of us
are forking out these days......

Well, Bethe, sounds to me as though you have it _relatively_well down there
in the home of Texas tea. $1.88 might start a price war in these parts.
The wife and I just returned from a five day 'autumn leaf tour' roadtrip
through the upper Midwest. The highest price we encountered was in St.
Joseph, Mich (resort town on Lake Michigan's lower west coast). We paid
$2.26/gal for Premium (93 octane). Prices varied as much as $.25/gal for
Premium in various parts of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. While I didn't
specifically check diesel, I seem to recall it being in the range of Regular
gas in this area (currently low $2's).
LC~ Happily loaded up the pension plan with oil stocks shortly after Shrub's
coronation. Gotta love those silver linings...

Oh I did................long time ago.................I have the truck to pull
the horse trailer, haul feed and larger farm chores. My other modes of
transportation consists of walking (very good for the body), biking and the
"little car" when I need it. Didn't think my post sounded like I was pissing
and moaning..........just an observation, no more and no less. Gotta have a
truck to haul horses to the vet-----some of the things that happen to a horse
simply cannot be treated via a farm call.

For the record, it is $2.40 per gallon for regular and $2.64 for

My husband owns a "smaller car" and it's still expensive to fill it up
(considering he does so frequently, with the amount of traveling he
does for work).

I see lots of SUV's out there and of course if one lives in Texas, one must
have a pickup....it's the "law!" :-) I drive a round trip daily of 60 miles
from my house to my farm; we live in town so my son can attend the high school
there and my parents live on the farm. The high school he would attend if we
lived at the farm we didn't think was suitable. Once he completes high school,
then we move to the farm and gas and diesel can be purchased thru our local
producers coop because the vehicles would be more than 50% farm use. I think
my gas bill for my little car is around $60 a month and sometimes more
depending on what I am doing that month in regards to the horses.

I was surprised unleaded gas was cheaper in Katy but diesel more expensive.
And of course I notice there are price differences between the gas companies.
Exxon seems to be the most expensive where I am and Diamond Shamrock to be the

I was a bit young to be burning it at that time (though it was plentiful
enough at about 22¢ a gallon when I got my TDL in 1971), but I'm old enough to
remember some knock-down drag-out gas wars in Tulsa at the start of the
1960s...one intersection just southwest of our north Tulsa neighborhood had
three stations on the four corners, and at one point in the steambath of
mid-1960, all three were pumping regular for 5.9¢ a gallon. (Premium you
could get for 9.9, which means the car I drive these days could have been fed
for 80 cents.)

I think the point of bethe's post was to engage some conversation and
exchange thoughts about the exorbitant cost of fuel. But that's a
great tool you provided. I found a station near me that's commanding a
couple of bucks plus some, for the juice.

It was and only because I don't know where everyone is, but I looked at that
website too, great tool I agree. It will help me to discern which gas station
is closest to me but the cheapest! I am just horrified at the gas prices and
it's really affecting airfare. I used to pay $233 roundtrip Los Angeles to
Houston and yesterday I forked out $533 for the exact same trip. Oh well, it's
only money......can't take it with you!
