Godlessness Is Not Great: How The Lack of Religion Poisons Everything
One thing which occurred to me lately: Can anyone find an example of a
single prominent atheistic leader who was kind, honest, and sober and
had a stable family life?
Not Karl Marx - he preached revolution and was an anti-Semite.
Not Friedrich Nietzsche - he never married and apparently died of
syphilis.
Not Sigmund Freud - he was an academic fraud.
Not Bertrand Russell - he was married four times and sexually
promiscuous.
Not Stalin or Mao - the most ruthless killers who ever lived.
Not Ayn Rand, who preached the "virtue" of selfishness and who was
extremely arrogant in her personal life.
Not Madalyn Murray O'Hair - she embezzled outrageously.
Not John Lennon, who was a hard drug user and very cruel to his first
wife and their child.
Even Carl Sagan, who was never really openly an atheist, seems to have
had a very abrasive personality and was divorced twice.
My own father, an outspoken atheist, was a promiscuous drunk.
It's really remarkable when one thinks of it. Not only has there
apparently never been an atheist saint. There has never been a
prominent atheist whom the average person would want to have as a
friend and neighbor.
Why is that?
Admittedly, many theists have been evil as well. However some have
been truly great - for example the Vilna Gaon, the Chofetz Chaim, the
Chazon Ish and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. But atheism never has leaders
like that.
Personally, I would compare theism to health care. In health care,
there are plenty of quacks, bogus fitness equipment and dangerous
diets. On the other hand, there are some excellent programs as well.
So someone who says, "Forget about a healthy lifestyle; all that stuff
is nonsense" is not a shrewd skeptic; he's a self-indulgent fool.
So perhaps, as Mr. Hitchens writes, God is not great - if you want to
be a selfish creep and not feel guilty about it.

I thought he was anti-Semolina, not anti-Semite. And wouldn't it be odd if
he were anti-himself since he met the dictionalry definition of a Semite?

Not Friedrich Nietzsche - he never married and apparently died of
syphilis.

But was he a leader? I understand that his books did not sell well. i find
them a very hard read.

Not Sigmund Freud - he was an academic fraud.

That's only your opinion. In his opinion he was totally real.

Not Bertrand Russell - he was married four times and sexually
promiscuous.

I guess to get married that many times, it would help to sleep around some,
or did his wives die of boredom listening to philosophical ideas?

Not Stalin or Mao - the most ruthless killers who ever lived.

How does that disqualify one from being kind, honest and sober with a nice
family?

Not Ayn Rand, who preached the "virtue" of selfishness and who was
extremely arrogant in her personal life.

You keep saying these nasty things about kind, wonderful people.

Not Madalyn Murray O'Hair - she embezzled outrageously.

And is there a better way to embezzle?

Not John Lennon, who was a hard drug user and very cruel to his first
wife and their child.
Even Carl Sagan, who was never really openly an atheist, seems to have
had a very abrasive personality and was divorced twice.

My own father, an outspoken atheist, was a promiscuous drunk.

It's really remarkable when one thinks of it. Not only has there
apparently never been an atheist saint. There has never been a
prominent atheist whom the average person would want to have as a
friend and neighbor.

Why is that?

I don't know. The Catholic Church says I can't be a Saint or have any
friends. That's why I'm sad and lonely.

Admittedly, many theists have been evil as well. However some have
been truly great - for example the Vilna Gaon, the Chofetz Chaim, the
Chazon Ish and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. But atheism never has leaders
like that.

Never has leaders I never heard of. Interesting

And Atheism I would compare to a Big Mac with a milkshake and fries.

So perhaps, as Mr. Hitchens writes, God is not great - if you want to
be a selfish creep and not feel guilty about it.

I always felt guilty about wanting to be a selfish creep, so you are right
about one thing at least.

Have you ever heard of A. Lincoln or B. Franklin, ot T. Jefferson?
There were also many others who, becasue of the prevailing political
stranglehold that religion has over the populace, were atheist but
pretending to be religious: Churchill, Ghandi..

One thing which occurred to me lately: Can anyone find an example of a

Not Karl Marx - he preached revolution and was an anti-Semite.

He didn't drink, was happily married and raised six kids. Far from
being insane, he was considered an important figurre in English
intellectual circles.

Not Friedrich Nietzsche - he never married and apparently died of
syphilis.

Actually, he died of pneumonia.

Not Sigmund Freud - he was an academic fraud.

Which has what to do a stable family life?

Not Bertrand Russell - he was married four times and sexually
promiscuous.

So?

Not Stalin or Mao - the most ruthless killers who ever lived.

Mao had a very stable family life, and wasn't an atheist.

There's a reason we called hum "Butt Head Astronomer" behind his back.
But again, you're wrong. Sagan led a very happy, fulfiling life
teaching and doing research.

My own father, an outspoken atheist, was a promiscuous drunk.

Too bad for you.

Marx, as I recall it, was of semitic extraction.
He was anti, many things, like wealth, hereditary titles, religion,
etc.
He was anti religion because the church, eastern and eastern, used
their power to keep the rich, rich, and the poor, poor.
He was a thousand years ahead of his time, but he was not a leader,
atheist or otherwise.

Not Friedrich Nietzsche - he never married

And that makes him a bad person?

and apparently died of syphilis.

Well, pneumonia, actually; But I'm sure the difference is lost on you.

Not Sigmund Freud - he was an academic fraud.

He was a Philologist, and philosopher.
He was Not a leader, of any kind.

Not Bertrand Russell - he was married four times and sexually
promiscuous.

There have been popes, with worse records.

Not Stalin or Mao - the most ruthless killers who ever lived.

IIRC, what I was taught as a child, The Man of Steel, was a xtian.
Mao was a family man, and was not an atheist

Not Ayn Rand, who preached the "virtue" of selfishness and who was
extremely arrogant in her personal life.

Not an atheist leader: Sounds more like a xtian to me.

Not Madalyn Murray O'Hair - she embezzled outrageously.

Well, not exactly.
In fact, she, and part of her family, were murdered by the embezzler.
But what the *****, the embezzler was a xtian, but he did murder three
atheists, so his place in heaven is assured.
She just might have been a leader, if atheists can be said to have any
leaders.
All of the strong atheists that I have met, are much like my self:
Anarchists.

Not John Lennon, who was a hard drug user and very cruel to his first
wife and their child.

A pop musician.
He might have been a leader on the music scene, but that is all.

Even Carl Sagan, who was never really openly an atheist, seems to have
had a very abrasive personality and was divorced twice.

Does it ever occur to you that it might have been his wives who
divorced him, that he might have been the innocent party?
No, of course it doesn't, you are a xtian, and so your only interest
is in slandering people.
.... Especially those who cannot speak for them selves.
BTW, Carl was not a leader, just a guy who liked the world to hear his
opinions.
.... Much like your self.

My own father, an outspoken atheist, was a promiscuous drunk.

But not an atheist leader.
However, if you would like to come here, I can introduce you to
several priests, and ministers of various denominations, and also
non-denomimational lay preachers, who spend more time in the bottle,
than they do in the pulpit.

It's really remarkable when one thinks of it. Not only has there
apparently never been an atheist saint.

Yea, that is a real pain.
Rome won't canonize anyone who is not a xtian, and preferably,
catholic.

There has never been a
prominent atheist whom the average person would want to have as a
friend and neighbor.

Oh, I don't know.
Professor Hawking
Dawkins,
Dylan Thomas
Sam Clemens

Why is that?

Because you are a dishonest fuckwit.

Admittedly, many theists have been evil as well.

Interesting that you don't list any.
But then, even broadband has some bandwidth limitations.

However some have
been truly great - for example the Vilna Gaon, the Chofetz Chaim, the
Chazon Ish and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. But atheism never has leaders
like that.

In fact, atheism does not have leaders; Period.

Personally, I would compare theism to health care.

American health care, I assume; Promises a cure for everything,
tomorrow, for a price.

<snip>

IIRC, what I was taught as a child, The Man of Steel, was a xtian.

He was as a young man - he was training to be a priest when he
discovered revolutionary Marxism and became an atheist while still a
young man.
Becoming a priest is not impossible for atheists - it was a secure
career where you were awarded respect whether it was deserved or not.
Stalin was attracted to power and if he hadnt discoverered
revolutionary marxism he could have used the priesthood as another
way to achieve power and prestige.
A psychopathic monster.

Mao was a family man, and was not an atheist

Mao believed in himself, a megalomaniac and a monster.
He would have sex with any woman he wanted - so the "family man" bit
is a stretch - his wife didnt care about his sexual fidelity.
He was very likely an atheist but he is also an example of a petty
god.

Not Ayn Rand, who preached the "virtue" of selfishness and who was
extremely arrogant in her personal life.

Not an atheist leader: Sounds more like a xtian to me.

She was an atheist and second rate philosopher who wrote bad
literature.
She wasnt the leader of very much - the Objectivist movement was not
exactly a major player in anything but it was an atheist movement..

Yep, anything theists can do to divert attention away from the fact
that their beliefs are false, they will do.
Suppose hypothetically there was some belief X. Assume X is
demonstrably false, but everyone who believes X is a better person (in
some objective way, it doesn't matter what) because of it. Should we,
assuming we could, believe X?
The fundamental difference between most theists and most atheists is
their answer to precisely this question. The typical atheist view is
that the confidence we should have that a proposition is true should
depend only on how much evidence we have that it is true. In other
words, a total rejection of faith, root and branch. The typical theist
view is that how much we want it to be true or how much we benefit if
it is true should be weighed as well. In other words, an acceptance of
faith as a means of obtaining knowledge.
The problem is that the theist view is demonstrably false. Faith is
certainly a means of acquiring beliefs, but it is not a means of
obtaining knowledge. Faith does not allow one to know that something
is true, which is a requirement for something to be knowledge.
