BOSTON, Nov. 22, 2006 - Joe Mroszczyk, president of the College Republicans
at Boston University, admits he set out to stir up a hornet's nest when he
came up with the idea of offering a whites-only scholarship at the school.
But he got a little more buzz than he bargained for.
"To tell you the truth, we didn't see this coming," Mroszczyk said. "The
Drudge Report picked it up yesterday, and today I just finished a round of
national interviews. It's kind of overwhelming."
All the media attention is focused on a $250 Caucasian Achievement and
Recognition Scholarship offered by Mroszczyk and the BU chapter of the
College Republicans. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average
of 3.2 or higher; they must write two essays; and, here's the kicker, they
must be at least one-quarter Caucasian.
The application itself offers an explanation: "We believe that racial
preferences in all their forms are perhaps the worst form of bigotry
confronting America today."
According to Mroszczyk, his group is offering the scholarship to point out
"how ridiculous it is to have any sort of racially based scholarship."
At BU, for example, students who are at least one-quarter Hispanic can apply
for a National Hispanic Recognition Scholarship.
"There are plenty of poor, white, academically gifted students who need that
money just as much," Mroszczyk said.

A lot of ethnic, race, religion, organizations do.
As a quick Google Search of Black, Hispanic, Latino,
Asian, etc., will quickly demonstrate non-whites do.
So if it is okay for others to have "whatever only"
organization it should be just fine for whites as well.

Whites still outnumber other group, so they will be on top.

Presumably we were talking about a scholarship for Americans who were
ethnically of French ancestry. This is similar to the Hispanic
scholarships.

and it is not when the scholarship is restricted to Blacks, Hispanics,

Hispanic is based on the historically native language of a person.
"Black", "white", "Asian" are based on "race", that is genetics. Of
course the observed markers for "black", "white" and "Asian" are only a
small number of the possible differences and therefore there could be
more real differences between individuals who are called "black" or
"white" than between some who are both considered of the same "race".

As long as it is privately funded, why not? Do a little digging.
There are scholarships in varying amounts for everything from being
left-handed to be the orphaned child of Borax miners.
And really, $250? That will cover three textbooks for one semester.

Being "Hispanic" isn't a "race", but the concept is similar. Would it be
OK to have scholarships for people from France? You have to be
ethnically 1/4 French to get the scholarship. It's paid for by some
French people who want to help other French people who are down and out,
or just need a leg up, that sort of thing. Is that wrong?
As long as it is privately funded, why not?
The whites only scholarship is privately funded.
Do a little digging.
There are scholarships in varying amounts for everything from being
left-handed to be the orphaned child of Borax miners.
And really, $250? That will cover three textbooks for one semester.
It's not going to pay the way for some smart white hillbilly but it
could help. And the point appears to be to discuss the broader issue of
scholarships based on race.
