WHO Official Admits Abortion Unsafe |
Volume 7, Number 22; WHO Official Admits Legal Abortion is Not "Safe" For Women
http://www.c-fam.org/
___________________________________________________________________________
Excerpt:
"At an international conference on population held
in Washington, DC last week, an official from the
World Health Organization (WHO) made an admission
that undermines one of the most common arguments
for the worldwide legalization of abortion on
demand. Dr. Gunta Lazdane, European Regional Advi-
sor to WHO on Reproductive Health and Research,
said that, 'up to 20% of maternal deaths are due
to abortion, even in those situations were abor-
tion is legal…there is a question whether ‘safe'
abortion is safe."

I looked up Gunta Lazdane, MD, and found the following:
"President, Latvian Association for Family Planning
and Sexual Health; Currently Head of the Department
of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Academy of Lat-
via in Riga. She represented the organization as
well as her country in several international meet-
ings, such as ICPD in Cairo in 1994 and the Inter-
national Conference for Women in Beijing in 1995.
Has published more than 50 articles on reproductive
health issues.

And the other 80% die from giving birth and complications from giving birth.

whatever. I tried finding your above 'fact' and came up with a
blank, other than your usual Pro-Life pages and they are not known for
accurate reporting.
I did find:
http://www.euro.who.int/document/ens/en50.pdf
Maternal Mortality: The maternal mortality
rate in the newly independent states
(NIS) countries is still around 40 per 100
000 live births, compared to the EU
where the level is below 10. Although
abortion is legal in almost all of Europe,
many women do not have access to safe
services. It is estimated that 25-30% of
maternal deaths in NIS countries are due
to (unsafe) abortion.
Says nothing about 'safe' abortions being unsafe.
Would be interesting to see the *actual* in context words of Ms
Lazdane to see how the Pro-Lifers twisted them into a lie.

Really? Thank God!
That is it, you have won the war. As I hear state after state begins to
outlaw abortions, there goes NY, CA, NJ, MD, FL etc. The liberal strongholds
are falling...
Congratulations, you post did it! You have saved the lives of many women who
wanted to get abortions. Now their lives are going to be filled with
happiness of an unwanted child.
Papa Jack, You have saved us all. I will write to the Pope to grant you
sainthood, while you are still alive.
I am trying to imagine how much time you have spent researching this topic,
how many countless times you watched CBN news to discover the real "TRUTH".
We must film a documentary about your monumental efforts. Quick, tell me
where you parked your trailer, I will summon M. Moore to begin filming.
Get a life!

** That's ok with the anti-choicers because now the women gets to PAY, PAY,
PAY for having sex. Why should she get to enjoy herself and not pay? They
don't care if the child is also miserable and suffering.

And a portion of what you (conveniently) omitted:
“Estimates for 1990 indicate that almost 30 million legal terminations
of pregnancy were performed. Millions of abortions, however, were
performed outside the legal system, often by unskilled providers, and
these abortions are unsafe.”
and...
“Restrictive legislation is associated with high rates of unsafe
abortion…"

But PJ probably thinks it means that 20% of abortions result in
maternal death. He does have this problem with reading comprehension.
