Object: WHOSE Idiotic Idea was this "I approved this message" BULLCRAP?
Here in Iowa, thanks to our early caucuses (first in the nation for
the primaries process), we are being INUNDATED by political TV ads
from the presidential candidates.
All well and good. Helps us to know their positions better,
and they can be interesting. (Gosh knows, if it weren't for their
advertising, those time slots undoubtedly would be filled with boring
commercials for everything from Draino to cars to Prell.)
And I found it interesting to see the airwaves where I've been for
the last couple of weeks... WA, OR... and for a couple of days, CA...
DEVOID of presidential-candidate ads.
BUT -- **This** year, there's someting very different about those
ads here in Iowa.
Almost ALL of them include the candidate saying these words:
"...and I approved this ad because..."
Well -- DUH!!!!! **OBVIOUSLY** they "approved" the ad... since
THEY are doing the SPEAKING in it!
Talk about STUPID!!
This is probably a manifestation of some bone-moronic bureaucrat
somewhere coming up with that, in order to "justify" his pathetic job.
And, boy is that POINTLESS!
Reminds me of the time, around 2 decades or so ago, now, that ALL of
the ads for OTC-medicines suddenly included the words, "Use only as
directed."
CLUE, bureaucrat: Once someone BUYS that medication, he OWNS
it. And therefore is entitled to use it ANY damn way that he pleases.
If he's intelligent, he'll follow the directions. BUT... whether or not
he *does* is HIS business only, and NOT anyone else's. Including that of
the people running commercials... or our ever more intrusibe, obnoxious,
and mindless "Big-Brotherish" federal government.
So if you live in a state where those presidential-candidate
commercials are NOT yet airing... NOW you know what to expect.
Expect to be BORED to death with the incessant words, "I approved
this message." Over, and over and OVER again!!

Two words: Legal liability

Of COURSE the federal government is
"Big-Brotherish". It is run by Republicans,
you know.

"When we got organized as a country and we wrote a fairly radical
Constitution with a radical Bill of Rights, giving a radical amount of
individual freedom to Americans, it was assumed that the Americans who had
that freedom would use it responsibly ... [Now] there's a lot of
irresponsibility. And so a lot of people say there's too much freedom. When
personal freedom's being abused, you have to move to limit it." Bill
Clinton
Undeniably, character does count for our citizens, our communities, and our
nation, and this week we celebrate the importance of character in our
individual lives ... core ethical values of trustworthiness, fairness,
responsibility, caring, respect, and citizenship form the foundation of our
democracy, our economy, and our society. Instilling sound character in our
children is essential to maintaining the strength of our nation into the
21st century. Bill Clinton - talking about President Nixon
