Object: ------- Syrians shun Barbie for prayer-mat doll -----------
DAMASCUS, Syria - Syrian girls have abandoned Barbie dolls
in favor of a homegrown, Muslim version that comes complete
with Islamic clothing and a tiny pink prayer mat. The black-
haired doll named Fulla is about the same size and build of
Mattel's classic doll, but is boxed wearing a black abaya
and matching head scarf, along with the mat. NewBoy Design
Studio, based in Syria, introduced the doll in November
2003, and she has quickly become a best seller all over the
region, The New York Times reports. In Damascus, a Fulla
doll sells for about $16, in a country where average per
capita income hovers around $100 per month. In corner shops
in Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Qatar there is Fulla breakfast
cereal or Fulla chewing gum, Fulla bicycles and girls
wearing trademark "Fulla pink" clothing. However, Maan Abdul
Salam, a Syrian women's rights advocate, said Fulla was
emblematic of a trend toward Islamic conservatism sweeping
the Middle East. "If this doll had come out 10 years ago, I
don't think it would have been very popular," he said.

The good news is that a multinational brand, Mattel, is abandoned.
Boycotting corporate brands is always a good move. I always try to
spend my money in a direction away from the big corporate brands even
if it means spending more.

Mattel dolls weren't made in the USA anyway so what's the big deal if
Muslims don't buy them? I also buy American when I can. But American made
anything is getting harder to find all the time.

But the brand Mattel is American and that is where the money is. The
product is cheap but the brand is the value added cream. IOW marketing
hot air. The modern corporation is light, selling brands rather than
products. Nike does not sell shoes, it sells "victory" and stamps the
cheap products made in the third world with its' mark. Modern
corporations have few assets bedsides brands with the product
manufacturing of those brands being contracted out to 3rd parties.
It's "intellectual property". The quotes are included because brands
impress unthinking people.
I recommend Naomi Klein's book "No Logo".
