Actually, neither of these cuts the mustard either philosophically or
psychologically. Which is no doubt why Nietzsche came up with the idea of
the 'Eternal Recurrence':
----------
"-- What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your
loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have
lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and
there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every
thought and sigh and everything unutterably small or great in your live will
have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence--even this
spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I
myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and
again, and you with it, speck of dust!' Would you not throw yourself down
and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once
experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a
god and never have I heard anything more divine.' If this thought gained
possession of you, it would change you as you are or perhaps crush you. (GS
341)"
----------
Discuss. No more than 3000 words, please. Hand it in Thursday.
Katt.

A good one, but I like another quote by the same author a tad better:
"There are those who are so scrupulously afraid of doing wrong that they
seldom venture to do anything."

1715-1747)

That would be a wise decision on your part, since your statement is self

Interestingly, the movie happened to show up on cable this morning
and I watched the first hour or so. I couldn't understand why it was
classified as a horror movie. I lost interest and didn't bother
watching the last half of it.
I'm sure you're gonna say "read the book," right? :)

Actually, yes, I would urge you to do that. It isn't very long and I find
it to be quite creepy. Plus: there's lust and violence in it, so you
needn't get bored. ;-)
Seriously though: I quite like the book. I don't know the movie you've
been trying to watch, but I think it's a shame it didn't manage to hold
your attention. The story is a classic and I think it to be well written.

BTW, are you a fan of vampire stories?
Not that Anne Rice *****. Read a bunch of those books when I was out of
work last fall. What a pile of long-winded, pretentious crap ;P
You know, last I heard of her, she left the state entirely, ran off to
California, and now has written "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt."
Oh my, was she born again or something?
Saw her on a local station in an interview before she moved to Metairie
(before she moved to SoCal) and she says she "grew out of" her atheism.
<eye roll>
Anyway, she went back to worshipping her priest or some such. She was
obviously an "atheist" in the sense of being a theist who was having a
tantrum over big sky daddy.
Boy, she was a big loss. Right up with Emeril the slum lord...
I've never been able to understand the fascination with vampire folklore.
Is it the immortality aspect or what?
No idea...

Into alt.atheism shot and breathlessly exclaimed:

More plagiarism. Marquis De Vauvenargues, this time.

To acheive anything at all it would not help very much if we thought we
could just wait a million years longer before getting started.

It could lead to severe procrastination..
I watched a show last night which talked about interstellar travel,
and it said that most people don't like taking up a project which they
won't personally observe the conclusion to before they die. I think
there's some truth to that, at least for me, if I take the age of my
death to be around 100 at most.
IOW, I'm not too excited about sending a space ship to some star
that's 4000 light years away, since I, and over 40 generations of
people won't actually see the results. I guess that's actually
short-sighted and even egocentric thinking, but it's how I and many
other people feel.

Peter:
Well, I would say we are not up to that anyway,
Let's wait for interstellar travel untill some Micky had been on Pluto
OK
But in the long term typir point might be a serious one,
for it might be crucial to survival of mankind
to reach another star-system by the time ou sun turns red-giant.
They allways say that won't happen for the next four-billions years,
but I suppose that might a bit of an inexact figure.
I have no idea how such an estimate is derrived
I hope the correct scientific estimate is not in fact 4 billion years
plus or minus 4 billion:)

And there's the chance a giant asteroid might slam into earth, wiping
out mankind, so maybe we should start sending out the biosphere space
ships right now, as soon as possible...

In the mean time, we can enjoy sci-fi stories with wormholes and
stargates, and the religious people can enjoy their living forever in
the bosom of their god, or living forever with 72 perpetual virgin
stories. :)
