i am having some problems with my psychiatrist, and i don't know which
of us is wrong. she recently told me, when i was having a crisis and
was totally unglued, how frustrating it is for her to treat me. she
also says that my self-mutilation and binge eating are issues of
"maturity" that i need to "grow out of" . i also have reason to believe
that one of my problems is high-fuctioning autism or something very
similar. she did not know that high-fuctioning autism existed. i have
ask her to please, read one book on self- mutilation and one on autism,
months ago and she hasn't. she often says things that make me think she
has no understanding of what's wrong with me, and there have been a lot
of times when i've made mistakes or had problems and really needed some
feedback on what went wrong, how i could have handled something better,
et c. and she does not give it to me. i can't change doctors because
nobody takes medi-cal(California medicaid) ,county mental health says
they can't help me , and it is more difficult all the time for me to
deal with her. is she falling down on the job, am i being unreasonable,
or something else? any feed back would be appriciated. best to everyone.

Out of curiousity, do your mutilation fantasies involve being nailed
to a cross? Sorry, I just had to ask ;). BTW, I'm glad that you're
getting medical help for your problem. Seriously. At least you're
not delusional enough to believe the nonsense that Jesus spewed
about mental illnesses being due to demonic possession.

Get a second opinion. It make take some work to find another doc willing
to see you, but I'm sure they are out there. You could even ask your
current doc if he/she knows anyone else you could see.

Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet TRUECRISTIAN
(XL3@OPERAMAIL.COM) made the light shine upon us with this:

Save your money. $500 will buy you a nice shotgun. Put the barrell in
your mouth, pull the trigger, and blow yourself to heaven. Jesus is the
best psychiatrist in the world. He'll cast those demons out of you in
no time. Good luck.

Please note that I'm not a medical professional, and can't give you
medical advice.
That said, it does sound like your current psychiatrist is incompetent,
and you should definitely seek help elsewhere. I don't know your
condition, and I don't know if you need an actual doctor; perhaps a
therapist who is more knowledgeable would be good enough? Competent
therapy is often very beneficial for high-functioning autists.
Naturally, you'd need an actual doctor to prescribe medication (if you
need any), so this is not a perfect solution. But I think finding
someone who you feel understands your condition is important.
IMPORTANT: it is quite possible that you are mistaken, that your
psychiatrist is perfectly competent, and that your self-diagnosis is
faulty. You haven't given enough information to judge. It is vital that
you don't stop seeking professional help or stop taking any medication
based on your feeling that this psychiatrist is incompetent. She is
definitely better than nothing. But if you can find legitimate help who
you feel more comfortable with, then by all means, do so!
Good luck,
Laszlo

What are you seeing a psychiatrist for? Are you on medications? Have
you stopped taking medications?
