Pastor accused of carrying gun to court on way to jury duty

A Baptist pastor is charged with carrying a loaded handgun into a downtown
Denver federal courthouse when he reported for jury duty.
The Rev. Don Michael Williams, 50, of Calvary Baptist Church of Denver, was
ordered released on $10,000 unsecured bond Tuesday after he spent Monday night
in the Washington County Jail, near Akron.
U.S. marshals arrested and jailed Williams, who lives in Centennial, after
security officers spotted the 9 mm handgun in Williams' briefcase as it went
through the X-ray machine at the entrance to the Alfred A. Arraj U.S.
Courthouse.
Williams was a prospective juror summoned for possible service and had not been
selected for any trial.
"He was very cooperative and made a statement to the court security officer that
he thinks he messed up," Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Ken Deal said.
Deal said the gun was loaded, and a federal prosecutor told U.S. Magistrate
Judge Craig Shaffer on Tuesday that one round was in the chamber, allowing the
gun to fire more quickly.
Williams has no permit to carry a concealed weapon, Deal said.
Shaffer ordered Williams to turn over any other guns he has to his lawyer while
the case against him is pending. Williams said he did have other guns.
Williams' attorney is Lee Foreman of Haddon Morgan Mueller Jordan Mackey &
Foreman - the same Denver firm that is representing Los Angeles Lakers
basketball star Kobe Bryant, accused of rape in Eagle County.
Foreman said he expects the guns to be delivered to him today.
"What I'm going to do with them I have not yet figured out," Foreman said.
He called carrying a gun into a federal courthouse "a silly mistake" but said he
didn't know why Williams might have a gun and had not had a chance to discuss
the case at length with his client.
A federal grand jury indicted Williams on Monday for possession of a firearm in
federal court, a felony punishable by up to two years in prison and/or a fine of
up to $250,000.
A person convicted of any felony is prohibited from ever possessing a firearm or
even ammunition.
Williams is minister of celebration and worship at Calvary Baptist Church of
Denver, near the intersection of South Monaco Parkway and East Hampden Avenue.
He went to work for the Denver church in 2002 as the third of its three pastors
after serving more than 20 years at churches in Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama,
according to Calvary Baptist's Web site.
