For Marine's kin, three precious hours
By David Abel, Globe Staff, 8/13/2003
For eight grueling months, Dale Racicot survived it all -- covert missions in
Iraq, brutal sandstorms, extreme heat, and all the hardships of life as a
soldier.
After hundreds of e-mails and brief calls home once a week from his base in
Kuwait, the 54-year-old master gunnery sergeant eagerly awaited this past Friday
night, when he would finally see his wife and two daughters. With balloons,
posters, and his "Marine Corps green" Toyota Tundra in the parking lot at
Manchester Airport, they bearhugged him as soon as he stepped off the plane.
Three hours later at their home in Weare, N.H., his daughters said prayers
thanking God that their father returned safely. His wife was getting ready for
bed. And then she heard him collapse on his dining room floor.
As Jan Racicot watched her husband die on their dining room floor from a heart
attack, he turned to her, looked at her intensely, and said: "I love you all."
"All I can say is that we're lucky we had three hours of precious time to spend
with him," she said.
Tall and fit with his thinning hair cropped even closer for active duty, Racicot
had been in Kuwait since January. He led a six-member intelligence unit attached
to the First Marine Expeditionary Force, which interrogated Iraqi prisoners of
war, compiled information, and briefed commanders in the field. The unit, his
wife said, played a role in the rescue of Army Private First Class Jessica
Lynch.
Despite their brief reunion, his wife and daughters said they shared a lot in
three hours. They hugged and cried and held hands. Racicot shared photos, told
them stories about the war, and he spoke glowingly of meeting Oliver North, the
retired colonel who reported for Fox News in Iraq.
He opened a bag and gave them each a red, white, and blue bandanna, Iraqi cash
with Saddam Hussein's picture on it, and Marine Corps key chains.
"He was my best friend in the whole world," said Jan Racicot. "I married the
kind of man most women dream of marrying. I got to have the real thing."
Although Racicot didn't enjoy the cold food and sleeping on a cot in
temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees, his family said he never complained.
They worried about him because of his age. But he loved serving in the Marines,
and he believed in the mission.
Racicot joined the Marines in 1969, at 20, and served until 1975, when he left
the service to raise his daughters. He joined the reserve intelligence unit in
1985.
"He was a dedicated man, of great patience, wisdom, and shrewd mind," said Staff
Sergeant Luis Dejesus, who has served on Racicot's team since 1998 and worked
with him during the war. "He was a mentor and a role model to the whole team. He
was someone we could always count on in a sticky situation."
For the past 10 years, when he wasn't training with the Marines, Racicot worked
as a lead mechanical designer at Vicor Corp., which makes power supplies and
other electrical equipment. At the company's offices in Andover, he helped
design laser systems and automated equipment for the company's assembly lines.
During the war, Racicot exchanged e-mails with his colleagues and told them he
looked forward to returning to his job.
"A gentleman to the core," said Daniel Castro, a mechanical designer and
co-worker at Vicor. "He never said no to anything. You could always rely on
him."
A devout Christian, Racicot played the drums in the music ministry at Goffstown
Christian Fellowship church, where his family said a funeral would be held
tomorrow.
Racicot put his family before himself. Once, when the family was going through
hard times, he worked four jobs to keep them going. "He was very selfless," said
Keri Magnarelli, his 24-year-old daughter. "We're so blessed he made it home. If
it had to happen the way it did, we have no regrets." Three weeks ago, Racicot
flew from Camp Commando in Kuwait to Camp Pendleton in California, where he and
his team were debriefed. His active duty was to officially end this week.

No need to check it out firsthand, we can use the same *****, innuendo,

Lie #1: "The evidence indicates that Iraq is reconstituting
its nuclear weapons program ... Iraq has attempted to purchase
high-strength aluminum tubes and other equipment needed for gas
centrifuges, which are used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons."
-President Bush, Oct. 7, 2002
Fact: This story, leaked to and breathlessly reported by The New
York Times' usually astute Middle East correspondent Judith Miller,
has turned out to be complete baloney. Department of Energy officials
who monitor nuclear plants say the tubes could not be used for
enriching uranium. One intelligence analyst who was part of the tubes
investigation, angrily told The New Republic: "You had senior American
officials like Condoleezza Rice saying the only use of this aluminum
really is uranium centrifuges. She said that on television. And that's
just a lie."
Lie #2: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein
recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."
-President Bush, Jan.28, 2003, in the State of the Union address
Fact: This whopper was based on a document that the White House
already knew to be a forgery, thanks to honest analysis by the CIA.
Sold to Italian intelligence by some hustler, the document carried the
signature of an official who had been out of office for 10 years and
referenced a constitution that was no longer in effect. The ex-ambassador
who the CIA sent to check out the story is angry: "They knew the Niger
story was a flat-out lie," he told The New Republic, anonymously. "They
[the White House] were unpersuasive about aluminum tubes and added this
to make their case more strongly."
Lie #3: "We believe [Saddam] has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear
weapons."
-Vice President Cheney, March 16, 2003, on "Meet the Press"
Fact: There was and is absolutely no basis for this statement. CIA
reports up through 2002 showed no evidence of an Iraqi nuclear weapons
program.
Lie #4: "[The CIA possesses] solid reporting of senior-level contacts
between Iraq and al-Qaeda going back a decade."
-CIA Director George Tenet in a written statement released Oct. 7, 2002
and echoed in that evening's speech by President Bush
Fact: Intelligence agencies knew of tentative contacts between Saddam and
al-Qaeda in the early '90s, but found no proof of a continuing
relationship. In other words, by tweaking language, Tenet and Bush spun
the intelligence 180 degrees to say exactly the opposite of what it
suggested.
Lie #5: "We've learned that Iraq has trained al-Qaeda members in
bomb-making and poisons and deadly gases ... Alliance with
terrorists could allow the Iraqi regime to attack America without
leaving any fingerprints."
-President Bush, Oct. 7
Fact: No evidence of this has ever been leaked or produced. Colin
Powell told the U.N. this alleged training took place in a camp in
northern Iraq. To his great embarrassment, the area he indicated was
later revealed to be outside Iraq's control and patrolled by Allied
war planes.
