01-Your Adversary, the Devil
Introduction No military commander could expect to be victorious in battle
unless he understood his enemy. Should he prepare for an attack by land
and ignore the possibility that the enemy might approach by air or by sea,
he would open the way to defeat. Or should he prepare for a land and sea
attack and ignore the possibility of an attack through the air, he would
certainly jeopardize the campaign. No individual can be victorious against
the adversary of our souls unless he understands that adversary; unless he
understands his philosophy, his methods of operation, his methods of
temptation. We hear very little today about Satan, and consequently many
who recognize Satan's existence and acknowledge that he is the enemy of
their souls are ill-prepared to meet him. We are ignorant of the nature of
this one who comes knocking at our heart's door. We do not know what
Scripture teaches about his person, his methods, his plans, his program,
his devices. Consequently we fall in defeat. How foolish it would be for a
doctor who has discovered lung cancer in a patient to prescribe a corn
plaster for application to his little toe. The treatment must fit the
disease. If we are going to be victorious in the warfare into which we
were thrust the moment we accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, we need to
understand that large body of Scripture that reveals to us the person and
the work of the one with whom we are at war. It is our desire to examine
the Scriptures to learn from their extensive revelation the nature of our
adversary, the Devil, his devices, deceits, doctrines, designs-so that we
may detect his movements in our daily experience. Victory may be ours. But
victory depends on knowledge. We trust that these words may be used by the
Victor to bring us to victory. Grateful acknowledgment is made and deep
thanks offered to Miss Nancy Miller and Mrs. Reba Allen for their
invaluable help, given as unto the Lord, in the work preparing this
manuscript for publication. Without their labors this volume would not
have been published. May the Lord grant them great joy as He is pleased to
use this in which they had a significant part to spread the knowledge of
His victory.
