As George Bush made his appearance and speech today at the United
Nations in NYC, 1,000 people issued a citizen's arrest warrant against him
for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The day began with twelve separate feeder marches converging from
across the city, consisting of perhaps several hundred protesters. The
people carried 20 large coffins with them and marched from all five boroughs
toward Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza and the UN Building where Bush was speaking.
The feeder marches were organized by Arrest Cheney First, the War Resister's
League, Witness Against Torture, Movement for a Democratic Society (MDS-NYC)
and others.

called by the vanguardist World Can't Wait, and quickly moved to herd the
marchers into the pens. When members of the War Resister's League exited the
pen to deliver the arrest warrant, police arrested 8 of them and grabbed
three or four unaffiliated protesters from the pen as well, at approximately
10:30 am.
Eventually, the original contingent of marchers and several hundred
others got tired of the pens and began to march south on Second Avenue
toward Washington Square Park. A few attempts were made to march in the
street, but police reacted violently, shoving and pushing marchers back onto
the sidewalk. In the process, police also seized any megaphones they saw.
Several protesters sustained injuries in these encounters, but no arrests
were made. In all, about 500 people made their way to Washington Square
Park.
The idea of citizen's arrest has its roots in common law, and allows
for any citizen to execute an arrest on someone who they witness committing
a felony offense. All states in the United States allow for citizen's
arrest, except for North Carolina, which follows different statutes. Those
undertaking a citizen's arrest can still be held liable in civil or criminal

of war crimes and crimes against humanity, for which, as commander in chief,
Bush bears command responsibility for the actions of those under his command
as well as for his own policies.
Under the principles of the Nuremburg Trials at the end of World War
Two, Bush would be indictable for all four counts established back then:
1. Participation in a common plan or conspiracy for the accomplishment
of crime against peace;
2. Planning, initiating and waging wars of aggression and other crimes
against peace;
3. War crimes;
4. Crimes against humanity.
While the efforts of citizens today to serve an arrest warrant on Bush
failed, be advised: the warrant stands. Please do you duty, and try at every
opportunity to bring this criminal to justice.

What's with 'protest pens'? I don't recall anything like that until the
Chimp stole the presidency. A thought came to me while reading this. How
far is it from these police actions to what the army is doing to the
protesters in Myanmar (Burma)?

What's with 'protest pens'? I don't recall anything like that until
the Chimp stole the presidency. A thought came to me while reading
this. How far is it from these police actions to what the army is
doing to the protesters in Myanmar (Burma)?

They're also called "Free Speech Zones"--supposedly Clinton's people are
the ones who devised them, but Chimp's getting more use out of them.

With a vengeance.

Y'know...until Chimp told me so, I didn't realize that I was "outraged"
by the situation in Burma. Until he mentioned it at the U.N., I didn't
even KNOW there was a situation in Burma.

I wonder if he could find Burma/Myanmar on a map. I wonder if he even
has a clue as to the continent on which it's located.

That's easy!
It's in Austria...

No. Bush says Austria is in Australia. When he was there he thanked your
PM for all the 'Austrian' troops accomplishments in Iraq (which he
believes is someplace in Russia). Although perhaps he also believes
that Burma is in Austria, which is in Australia, which is part of Canada.

First, the War Resister's League, Witness Against Torture, Movement
for a Democratic Society (MDS-NYC) and others.

Police had already set up a protest pen outside of the UN for a
rally
called by the vanguardist World Can't Wait, and quickly moved to herd
the marchers into the pens. When members of the War Resister's League
exited the pen to deliver the arrest warrant, police arrested 8 of
them and grabbed three or four unaffiliated protesters from the pen
as well, at approximately 10:30 am.

Eventually, the original contingent of marchers and several
hundred
others got tired of the pens and began to march south on Second
Avenue toward Washington Square Park. A few attempts were made to
march in the street, but police reacted violently, shoving and
pushing marchers back onto the sidewalk. In the process, police also
seized any megaphones they saw. Several protesters sustained injuries
in these encounters, but no arrests were made. In all, about 500
people made their way to Washington Square Park.

The idea of citizen's arrest has its roots in common law, and
allows
for any citizen to execute an arrest on someone who they witness
committing a felony offense. All states in the United States allow
for citizen's arrest, except for North Carolina, which follows
different statutes. Those undertaking a citizen's arrest can still be
held liable in civil or criminal court for any damages they inflict
in the process. However, they have full rights to detain and arrest a
suspect who they witness in commission of a felony.

Applicable felonies in this case include, but are not limited

Then you weren't paying attention. There was much outrage at the "free
speech pens" set up at the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los
Angeles to contain the protesters who gathered to demonstrate against Al
Gore. And not only were they contained in fenced-in pens, but each group
had to reserve time in 30-minute blocks in advance and they weren't
allowed to protest outside of their allotted time-block. So even if they
were in the pen, they could still be arrested if they were protesting at
the wrong time of the day. (And that was during the golden reign of
Clinton, before Bush became president, by the way.)
In fact, specially-designated and enclosed demonstration areas were SOP
for all presidential visits during both the first Bush and Clinton
presidencies. (Maybe Reagan and Carter, too, for all I know. I can't
find any earlier reference to them, however.)

They're also called "Free Speech Zones"--supposedly Clinton's people are
the ones who devised them, but Chimp's getting more use out of them.

No, they're just getting more coverage now. During the Clinton
presidency, protesters were generally demonstrating *against* the things
the media supported so they got very little coverage nor was there
nearly as much outrage from the media when right-wing protesters were
silenced or marginalized. But as soon as the administration changed it
suddenly became a huge news story when protesters of the opposite stripe
were contained in pens. I always get a chuckle whenever I'm working a
presidential visit these days and see hundreds (sometimes thousands) of
people waving flags and cheering as the motorcade passes by and the
media gravitates to the 15-20 people standing off by themselves (not in
a pen, either, mind you) holding "no blood for oil" signs. When you
watch the coverage of the visit later that day, it's full of images of
those 20 people and you'd never know that the supporters outnumbered
them 10 to 1.
But as for the protest pens, apparently neither the Democrats nor the
media are cognizant of the fact that whatever you give the government
the power to do *for* you today, you also give it the power to do *to*
you tomorrow.
And just a technical note, the protest areas in NYC that are set up for
the U.N. have nothing to do with Bush or the federal government. They
are implemented and enforced by the NYPD as part of their general
security plan for the U.N. General Assembly. The demo areas are there
all week, both before and after Bush's appearance at the U.N., and are
not part of the U.S. delegation's security measures. They would be in
place whether or not Bush came to speak.

Until Bush mentioned it at the U.N., I didn't
even KNOW there was a situation in Burma.

Well, it's hardly Bush's fault that you're so ill-informed. I certainly
knew about it without needing to hear his U.N. speech.
