are. At fourteen, I think I could have made such a decision on my own
had the need arisen. The emotional, physical and intellectual
difference between fourteen and eighteen is a lot smaller than the
difference between fourteen and eight.

A 14 year old girl is not exactly a child. Not exactly an adult
either, but somewhere in between. She should certainly be able to
decide not to have to bear a kid she doesn't want, especially when
it's a result of rape.

honestly don't have too many problems when 14 year olds engage in
protected consensual sex with people of similar age. The law in
England tends to ignore that sort of case as well. It's no desirable,
but legislation won't stop it.
As for drinking, I was drinking at 14, at home, and in pubs from 15,
regularly from 16. My introduction to alcohol was gradual, and began
at the age of about 11. Out of all the people I know my age, I seem to
be the best at moderating my intake of alcohol to a sensible level and
only very occasionally getting drunk. That's because I had a sensible
and gradual introduction to alcoholic drinks as something to be
enjoyed, not as a way of getting drunk.
In this country, a 14yo would be tried in a very similar way to an
adult, but the sentence would be different.
As for abortions, a system called Gillick competency is used, where a
doctor has to decide if someone under the age of the majority is
capable of making such a decision on their own. One would hope that a
girl would involve her parents, but if the nature of the parents is
such that she feels she cannot, then it is best that they do not find
out.

arguments? Yes, I first tasted alcohol at eleven, I believe it was a
very small glass of a weak wine. It was then several years before I
was in charge of what I drank, and how much. I can count on the
fingers of one hand the amount of tims in my life I have been
seriously drunk, and tend to drink in the strictest moderation. this
is because I was introduced to alcohol slowly and I was introduced to
alcoholic drinks as something one savours, not as a means to an end.

dogmatic laws on underage drinking, like in the USA, where people have

It's not an argument. It's a fallacy. Anecdotes are
never "evidence." Even if the anecdote is someone
accurate -- and includes all relevant information --
it still tells us NOTHING about frequency &

So even if your Aunt's sister's neighor's daughter
knew a guy who once ate razor blades & nothing
happened to him, we would have no reason to
assume that he is typical, and that the rule (as

The argument is that countries that are more liberal about drugs and
alcohol and sex tend to have lower teenage alcoholism rates and lower
teenage pregnancy rates. Try comparing Septic and Dutch teen pregnancy
rates if you want evidence.

Canada's age of consent laws are a lot more
complicated than, say, here in the United States.
What's more, if authorities wanted to, they would
have little difficulties in convicting any grown man
who had sex with a 14 y.o.
About the only exception would be a one-time thing
where nothing more than pillow talk was exchanged,
and the 14 y.o. absolutely/positively insisted that they
were the one to initiate.
Heck, even buying dinner for your 14 y.o. could
qualify as an exchange of something of value for
sex... instantly making the sex a crime.

Note in this particular case the plaintiffs were wanting the release

Did I mention giving those below the age of majority full adult
rights? No, I don't think I did, but some rights are fundamental, and
I think the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is one of those
rights, regardless of what the lawmakers claim their age should be.
For the record, I feel that a child should be able to keep their
medical records secret if their doctor agrees they are mature enough.
I believe that beer should be on sale to people from around the age of
fourteen, in public houses, with a strictly enforced rule that those
already intoxicated are not served alcohol, and that those aged
14-17ish aren't allowed to buy anythign stronger than beer. I believe
the vote should come in at 16 and that education should be optional
from 16.

rights? No, I don't think I did, but some rights are fundamental, and
I think the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is one of those
rights, regardless of what the lawmakers claim their age should be.
If they want to deny the right to choose to 14 year olds, let them
deny the right to get pregnant to 14 year olds.
the vote should come in at 16 and that education should be optional
from 16.
Education is never optional. Going to school is. Sometimes one has
nothing to do with the other - in both directions.
