"Under God" Under Assault
In a move to protect basic religious freedoms, the Judiciary Committee in
the House of Representatives yesterday approved a bill (H.R. 2028) that
would protect the phrase "under God" (as it appears in the Pledge of
Allegiance) from being ruled unconstitutional. The Ninth Circuit Court of
Appeals did just that in a ruling last year. The Supreme Court has since
overruled this decision on the basis of a lack of standing of the plaintiff
but left the substance of the issue undecided. I am hopeful the full House
will vote on this before the elections as it will show which Members of
Congress are willing to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities in
defense of religious freedom. For far too long the lawmakers have allowed
the courts to overrule them and make law. This bill is an important move to
restrict the courts from rewriting the constitution in respect to our
religious freedom. Contact your representative and ask him or her to support
H.R. 2028, The Pledge Protection Act.

Working Within a Budget
On issues such as judges, sanctity of life, and marriage, there are
generally clear distinctions between the two major political parties, but on
the matter of government spending the line is getting blurrier and blurrier.
A recent Heritage Foundation study has found that since 2001 federal
spending has increased 25 percent, mostly while we had a Republican
administration and Congress. With the numerous hurricanes battering the
Southeast, Congress is responding by putting together an emergency
supplemental that supposedly provides relief for the victims. Instead of a
clean bill, lawmakers are instead expected to add pork projects with the
intended purpose of using taxpayer funds to get themselves reelected. In
addition, Congress is behind schedule in passing the 13 annual
appropriations bills and instead will probably pass a large overall spending
bill, which makes it easier to include hidden pork projects. The president
and Congress need to hear the message that this is unacceptable. Legislation
such as Senator Brownback's (R-Kan.) CARFA bill (which would end unneeded
government programs) and Representative Jeb Hensarling's (R-Tex.) Family
Budget Protection Act (which would introduce much needed budgetary reforms)
are pieces of legislation which should be trumpeted this election season and
passed as soon as possible. Families quickly find a way to work within a
reasonable budget if they hope to survive. It is time Congress learns the
same lesson.
Can't Keep a Good Man Down
Webster's Dictionary now includes the word "slime" as a verb. That is
fortuitous given the political season we are weathering now. Desperation on
the part of some has touched the lives of some good and decent people
attempting to serve their communities by running for public office. Among
them is a dedicated doctor and former FRC Board Member, Tom Coburn. Needless
to say, we were distressed to see that the Washington Post gave ink to a
baseless lawsuit against the doctor which was twice thrown out of court
fourteen years ago and resurrected by Dr. Coburn's opponent in a desperate
attempt to stop the momentum of Dr. Coburn's Senate campaign. Such reporting
is not befitting of the word "journalism"--rather (not Dan), it sinks to the
level of "sliming," and that is what has been done to our friend, Dr.
Coburn. But we know him to be a pro-life, pro-family, dedicated doctor with
a love of his God, his country, and his fellow man, and no attempt to
denigrate his good works will succeed.

Who's religious freedom? What about the religious freedom of those who
do not believe in the christian God such as buddhists, wiccans,
atheists, etc., etc.??

One of their leaders has already made a rather famous quote regarding this
subject.
"So let us be blunt about it: we must use the doctrine of religious liberty to
gain independence for Christian schools until we train up a generation of
people who know that there is no religious neutrality, no neutral law, no
neutral education, and no neutral civil government. Then they will get busy in
constructing a Bible-based social, political and religious order which finally
denies the religious liberty of the enemies of God." - Gary North, "The
Intellectual Schizophrenia of the New Christian Right" in Christianity and
Civilization: The Failure of the American Baptist Culture, No. 1 (Spring,
1982), p. 25.

It never fails to amaze me how the words 'religious freedom' is such
a fertile Double Speak.
Religious antics to be sure, but the underlying issue is the attempt
to legislate a god under the constitution.
What is this thing about being 'under' the magic pixie? I'm sure it
has something to do with all mankind being a piece of *****, so why
fight for wanting to be a piece of *****?
Humans... go figure.
