Interesting & thought provoking
Can't say I agree with all of it but some things appear to be right on the
money

19. The Bible is riddled with contradictions
20. Christianity borrowed its central myths and ceremonies from other
ancient religions
This pamphlet briefly looks at many of the reasons that Christianity is
undesirable from both a personal and a social point of view. All of the
matters discussed here have been dealt with elsewhere at greater length,
but that’s beside the point: the purpose of 20 Reasons to Abandon
Christianity is to list the most outstanding misery-producing and socially
destructive qualities of Christianity in one place. When considered in
toto, they lead to an irresistible conclusion: that Christianity must be
abandoned, for the sake of both personal happiness and social progress.
As regards the title, "abandon"—rather than "suppress" or "do away
with"—was chosen deliberately. Attempts to coercively suppress beliefs are
not only ethically wrong, but in the long run they are often ineffective—as
the recent resurgence of religion in the former Soviet Union demonstrates.
If Christianity is ever to disappear, it will be because individual human
beings wake up, abandon their destructive, repressive beliefs, and choose
life, choose to be here now.

Tell it to the person who wrote the article. That person for whatever
reason elected to write one about Christianity.

Right. Corports are as stupid as any other theist.
(What the heck is a Corport?)

Partially but not equally. It is the Christians waging holy war in
North America on gays. Though the Jews and Muslims theoretically have
similar beliefs, they don't impose them. You don't see Jews and
Muslims trying to impose their creation myths in place of evolution.
This is largely just the smaller numbers, but it affects their
behaviour.

Are you kidding? If two Muslims were caught buggering eachother, they would
have their dicks cut off and shoved down their throats before they were
stoned.
And fundamentalist Jews are just as intent on taking over the reins of
governement in Israel as they are here and I have no doubt that they would
revel in persecuting gays if they ever got to that point.

In most Muslim countries, evolution isn't even an option. Only Turkey score
lower than the United States in a poll gauging acceptance of evolution. I
don't think any other Muslim countries were listed.

Yes, in Israel, where they are a majority, I could expect them to
become obnoxious, but again that is their own business. People who
emigrate to Israel knowing full well what sort of society they are
volunteering for -- a militaristic theocracy.

The wherefore your statement: "Though the Jews and Muslims theoretically
have
similar beliefs, they don't impose them"?
I think the essence of theocracy is to impose your beliefs on a population.

Christians are always trying to sell their religion to me. Jews and
Muslims never have. They are happy to answer my questions.
This is the way they behave in Canada. When I was in Muslim countries
Indonesia and Malaysia, I saw nobody on the street handing out tracts
or engaging in prosletysing.
I know then that forcing the religion in NOT part of Islam per se.
This is not to say that in some parts of the world, people try to
force it on others.

That is true in Saudi Arabia, but not Egypt where male-male sex is
almost universal.

own religion, that is their business. I get annoyed when they start
imposing their nutty ideas on others.

The point is over my life I have had an average of 3 death threats
from Christians every day during the early 1970s. Muslims never have
given me any trouble. Even though they knew I was gay they invited me
to their mosques to have a look.
Of course in Iran they are nutty about gays. But the Iranians here in
Victoria are not giving me a rough time.

Ancient history, pal. How widely is evolution accepted today? I would bet
dollars to dinars that the somehwat secualr country Turkey has the most
acceptance of evolution...and even then it is less than the US which is a
fundamentalist backwater by developed nation standards.

Partially but not equally. It is the Christians waging holy war in
North America on gays. Though the Jews and Muslims theoretically have
similar beliefs, they don't impose them.
Yes, the Muslimes just blow up the infidels. You're funny (i.e.,

You don't see Jews and
Muslims trying to impose their creation myths in place of evolution.
This is largely just the smaller numbers, but it affects their
behaviour.

You are the one being aggressively stupid and racist.
The reason the Iraqis and Afghans blow up American infidels has
nothing to do with their religion. It has to with the fact Americans
invaded their country, raped their sons, tortured their children,
napalmed their grandmothers, white phosphorused their daughters etc
etc.
If Iraqis invaded the USA you would kill them for invading, not
because you wanted to convert them to Christianity.

Good answer!
My dad's response, when asked if he was saved, or born again,
was to growl "None of your goddamned business!" Seemed to work.

I have written a similar essay. The problem is not so much with
Christianity but with what I call Kristianity, a grotesque morphing of
the original teachings into almost its exact opposite.

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but
inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or
figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree
bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree
bring forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast
into the fire.
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."

3. Christianity is based on dishonesty
"Christianity is based on dishonesty. The Christian appeal to fear, to
cowardice, is an admission that the evidence supporting Christian
beliefs is far from compelling. If the evidence were such that
Christianity’s truth was immediately apparent to anyone who considered
it, Christians—including those who wrote the Gospels—would feel no
need to resort to the cheap tactic of using fear-inducing threats to
inspire "belief." ("Lip service" is a more accurate term.) That the
Christian clergy have been more than willing to accept such lip
service (plus the dollars and obedience that go with it) in place of
genuine belief, is an additional indictment of the basic dishonesty of
Christianity.
How deep dishonesty runs in Christianity can be gauged by one of the
most popular Christian arguments for belief in God: Pascal’s wager.
This "wager" holds that it’s safer to "believe" in God (as if belief
were volitional!) than not to believe, because God might exist, and if
it does, it will save "believers" and condemn nonbelievers to hell
after death. This is an appeal to pure cowardice. It has absolutely
nothing to do with the search for truth. Instead, it’s an appeal to
abandon honesty and intellectual integrity, and to pretend that lip
service is the same thing as actual belief. If the patriarchal God of
Christianity really exists, one wonders how it would judge the cowards
and hypocrites who advance and bow to this particularly craven
"wager."

Look at all the con-men on TV peddling holy healing water, financial
success handkerchiefs, etc. Look at the phony faith healers
collecting millions. Think of all the filet mignons that gave their
lives to make Jerry Falwell's jowls. Look at the politicians. The more
Christian a man pretends to be Christian, the higher the probability
he take bribes. The more Christian a man pretends to be, the more
likely he is to molest children. George W. Bush is the ultimate
example, a mass murderer, child rapist, and child torturer.
Christianity has become the camouflage for the world's pus sacs.
We have two kinds of Christians, stupid naive but sincere people and
intelligent conniving wolves. The wolves run the intuitions.

Did you ever notice that those you have met who claim God talks to

"Christianity breeds arrogance, a chosen-people mentality. It’s only
natural that those who believe (or play act at believing) that they
have a direct line to the Almighty would feel superior to others. This
is so obvious that it needs little elaboration. A brief look at
religious terminology confirms it. Christians have often called
themselves "God’s people," "the chosen people," "the elect," "the
righteous," etc., while nonbelievers have been labeled "heathens,"
"infidels," and "atheistic Communists" (as if atheism and Communism
are intimately connected). This sets up a two-tiered division of
humanity, in which "God’s people" feel superior to those who are not
"God’s people."
That many competing religions with contradictory beliefs make the same
claim seems not to matter at all to the members of the various sects
that claim to be the only carriers of "the true faith." The carnage
that results when two competing sects of "God’s people" collide—as in
Ireland and Palestine—would be quite amusing but for the suffering it
causes."
This is not just a Christian vice, it infects Judaism and Islam. It is
the heart of the conflict in Israel where God's chosen people
sincerely believe that status gives them title to huge tracts of other
people's land.

It might be an interesting tactic for the science teachers to fight
back. They will say "Fine will teach the history of pre-science in
science class exploring the Christian creation myths, on the grounds
we study them from all the cultures the students in American
represent. To be selective would be giving special preference to
Christianity, surely unconstitutional."

"But this should not be surprising coming from Christians, members of
a religion that teaches that eternal torture is not only justified,
but that the "saved" will enjoy seeing the torture of others. As St.
Thomas Aquinas put it:
In order that the happiness of the saints may be more delightful and
that they may give to God more copious thanks for it, they are
permitted perfectly to behold the sufferings of the damned . . . The
saints will rejoice in the punishment of the damned.
Thus the vision of heaven of Christianity’s greatest theologian is a
vision of the sadistic enjoyment of endless torture."
Apparently dwelling perpetually on Jesus's torment on the cross turns
people eventually into sadists as a way to endure it.
The very core of Christianity is the belief that you can seek
redemption by dumping pain on Jesus to cleanse your sins. You are
ENCOURAGED to abuse Jesus as your scapegoat. Even though this
transference of sin and pain is all imaginary, the use of scapegoats
is a barbaric and sadistic practice. It can't help but lead to
bullying mistreating others generally.

"Today, however, the conflict between religion and science is largely
being played out in the area of public school biology education, with
Christian fundamentalists demanding that their creation myth be taught
in place of (or along with) the theory of evolution in the public
schools. Their tactics rely heavily on public misunderstanding of
science. They nitpick the fossil record for its gaps (hardly
surprising given that we inhabit a geologically and meteorologically
very active planet), while offering absurd interpretations of their
own which we’re supposed to accept at face value—such as that dinosaur
fossils were placed in the earth by Satan to confuse humankind, or
that Noah took baby dinosaurs on the ark."
The USA has fallen behind most of the developed world in science
education. The reason is simple, most Americans claim to believe in
religion over science. A medieval revival of belief in magic and
distrust of logic has seized the country. This inevitably has lead to
the USA falling behind economically.

here we have a discourse by a Gnostic... the wisdom of the world.
The term ' gnosis ' ( to know ) is a Greek word expressing a type of
understanding or consciousness gained through personal experience. It
is through this type of transcendental experience that followers of
Gnostic belief systems seek escape from ignorance... everyone who is
not a Gnostic is therefore ignorant and needs gnostic enlightenment.
