21 Ways to be a Good Democrat
You have to . be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand.
.. believe that businesses create oppression and governments create
opportunity.
.. believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are more of a
threat than U.S. nuclear weapons technology in the hands of Chinese and
North Korean communists.
.. believe that there was no art before federal funding.
.. believe that global temperatures are less affected by cyclical documented
changes in the earth's climate and more affected by soccer moms driving
SUVs.
.. believe that gender roles are artificial, but being homosexual is natural.
.. believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal funding.
.. believe that the same teacher who can't teach 4th-graders how to read is
somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.
.. believe that hunters don't care about nature, but loony activists, who
have never been outside of San Francisco, do.
.. believe that self-esteem is more important that actually doing something
to earn it.
.. believe that Mel Gibson spent $25 million of is on money to make The
Passion of The Christ for financial gain only.
.. believe that the NRA is bad because it support certain parts of the
Constitution, while the ACLU is good because it supports certain parts of
the Constitution.
.. believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too high.
.. believe that Margaret Sanger and Gloria Steinem are more important to
American history than Thomas Jefferson, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Thomas
Edison.
.. believe that standardized tests are racist but quotas and set-asides are
not.
.. believe that Hillary Clinton is normal and a very nice person.
.. believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked anywhere in history
that it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in charge.
.. believe conservatives telling the truth belong in jail, but a liar and a
sex offender belonged in the White House.
.. believe that homosexual parades displaying drag, transvestites, and
bestiality should be constitutionally protected, and manger scenes at
Christmas should be illegal.
.. believe that illegal Democratic Party funding by the Chinese government is
somehow in the best interest of the United States.
.. believe that this message is part of a vast, right-wing conspiracy.

You can't rewrite history no matter how much you try loopy lady. Whenever
and where ever the deinstitutionalization movement began, Reagan was the
governor that pushed it through in California. Period.
Interesting thing in that article you pointed out...
"Most state laws today prohibit treating individuals over their objection
unless they pose an immediate danger to themselves."
(They neglected "or others" which is also another reason for involuntary
treatment)
Do you believe people should be able to be committed and treated against
their will by the state and with public funds? That's what used to happen
before deinstitutionalization. I would have thought you (of all people)
would approve of what Reagan did rather than try to pretend it didn't
happen.
What's really funny is diagram lady talking about deinstitutionalization.
Irony abounds...

Don't apply simplistic quotes to complex problems. Yes, the liberals of
the '60s agitated for the releasse of people from mental hospitals.
Note that lithium was just becoming available to people with bipolar
disorder about then. Also, some treatments for schizophrenia were
coming online too.
This is not to say they were correct in all instances.
Plenty of people were released who should not have been.
Why did this happen?
In an effort to curb government spending, conservatives took advantage
of this push by the liberal establishment and ran with it. This was a
great way to reduce government spending. In fact. if they releases all
the mental cases. the gubmint could save a ton of cash.
Of course, it turns out to be more expensive in the long run when those
mental patients started tuning up with TB. They would show up for 3
weeks of treatments, feel better, and blow off the last 3 weeks.
So if you want to complain about the cost of treating a mentally ill
person for anything- mental illness, antiobiotic resistant TB, you name
it- send a thank you card to Ronald Reagan.

I'm deadly serious. Prior to the deinstitutionalization movement, it was
frighteningly easy to have someone committed against their will. And
regardless of what she thinks that "diagram" thing is or is not, it would
have been pretty damn easy to find a shrink and a judge that would think
she needed the ever so gentle ministrations of the state...

I beg to differ on that. Deinstitutionalization was about releasing people
but it doesn't seem terribly hard to get someone committed. I was on a jury
a couple of years ago in which a 18 year old boy was institutionalized
involuntarily because his blood-sucking relatives couldn't collect ADC any
longer and when he tried to leave home, they figured out that if he was
institutionalized for emotional instability they would continue to receive
checks for his benefit. It was a sickening display of liberal thinking
about "caring" for someone. I'm pleased to say I hung the jury. I found
out from his lawyer when I followed up, however, that another jury did
commit him.

No one here, AFAIK, denies that the USA has competent doctors and

The biggest problem in Canada is that you have to wait a bit for some
procedures and tests. There's a big debate here about permitting some
form of private health care addressing those issues. It's a complex issue.

Exactly. Mother Teresa is a good example. She made lots of money for her

21 Ways to be a Good Democrat
Herein follows the amended and corrected version, "How to be J Young- a
complete hypocrite, idiot, and buffoon."
You have to . be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand.
. believe that businesses create oppression and governments create
opportunity.
To be J Young, you have to be oblivious to the inherent contradiction
in the religious right's position: supporting capital punishment while
screaming "life is sacred!".
. believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are more of a
threat than U.S. nuclear weapons technology in the hands of Chinese and
North Korean communists.
To be J Young, you have to think that these are somehow related. Of
course nuclear weapons technology in the wrong hands is a threat.
Democrats wonder why GW Bush has completely ignored the threat from N
Korea while emptying out blood and treasure and credibility into the
sands of Iraq.
. believe that there was no art before federal funding.
To be J Young, you have to be oblivious to the fact that art is a major
component of life. That art helps add meaning to life, and that
appreciation of art is something Neandertals apparently had, but J
Young lacks. Every civilized nation on the planet supports its artists.
. believe that global temperatures are less affected by cyclical documented
changes in the earth's climate and more affected by soccer moms driving
SUVs.
To be J Young, you have to ***** in your kitchen. You have to shut out
all data and analyses collected and performed by reputable
climatologists and ecologists, while listening to economists at the
Cato Institute insist they know how more than the scientists who have
studied the field for 30 years.
. believe that gender roles are artificial, but being homosexual is natural.
To be J Young, you have to be oblivious to the influence of societal
norms on human behavior. You also have to be a
flaming-closet-transvestite who probably like dressing up in...well,
you get the idea.
. believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal funding.
To be J Young, you have to be so stupid you cannot see the benefit of
government funded educational and needle-exchange programs, both of
which slowed the spread of HIV in countries advanced enough to
implement them.
. believe that the same teacher who can't teach 4th-graders how to read is
somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.
To be J Young, you have to be willing to slander an entire profession
in an attempt to make a cheap political sound bite. To be J Young, you
have to LIKE the sewer you inhabit.
. believe that hunters don't care about nature, but loony activists, who
have never been outside of San Francisco, do.
I am a Democrat, and I hunt. I am a professional biologist, too. I know
plenty of Democrats who hunt. To be J Young, you have to be willing to
lie.
. believe that self-esteem is more important that actually doing something
to earn it.
I am also a teacher. I do not count self-esteem more important than
acheivement. Lies again.
. believe that Mel Gibson spent $25 million of is on money to make The
Passion of The Christ for financial gain only.
No one believes that you moron. He made the movie because he's insane.
. believe that the NRA is bad because it support certain parts of the
Constitution, while the ACLU is good because it supports certain parts of
the Constitution.
To be J Young, you have to believe that the NRA is good because it
support certain parts of the Constitution, while ignoring the rest,
while the ACLU is bad because it supports the whole Constitution.
. believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too high.
To be J Young, you have to follow the republican party line so blindly
you cannot tell when someone has used the tax laws to rob you.
. believe that Margaret Sanger and Gloria Steinem are more important to
American history than Thomas Jefferson, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Thomas
Edison.
To be J Young, you have to pay lip service to Thomas Jefferson while
letting religion intrude on government.
. believe that standardized tests are racist but quotas and set-asides are
not.
To be J Young, you have to be such a racist ***** that you're
willing to base a person's future on standardized tests despite the
fact they're a poor predictor of future performance.
. believe that Hillary Clinton is normal and a very nice person.
Just wrong. Hillary Clinton is an extraordinary person. And soon she'll
be J Young's president!
. believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked anywhere in history
that it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in charge.
To be J Young, you have to be so stupid you cannot see that elements
of socialism ARE working in many parts of the world.
. believe conservatives telling the truth belong in jail, but a liar and a
sex offender belonged in the White House.
To be J Young, you have to be so stupid thay he thinks the neocon
liying thugs in power now are in some way related to honest
conservatives like Barry Goldwater.
. believe that homosexual parades displaying drag, transvestites, and
bestiality should be constitutionally protected, and manger scenes at
Christmas should be illegal.
Homosexuals should be allowed to march in parades because they're
Americans (in the USA, obviously). To be J Young, you have to equate
homosexuality with bestiality, although the words obviously denote
mutually exclusive proclivities. To be J Young, you have to be
against the things you want to do because you find yourself so
loathsome.
. believe that illegal Democratic Party funding by the Chinese government is
somehow in the best interest of the United States.
To be J Young, you have to think it's better that the Chinese
government funds trillions of dollars of debt for our grandchildren to
pay off.
. believe that this message is part of a vast, right-wing conspiracy.
J Young could never be part of a conspiracy- he's way too stupid.
Chris

Who says that socialism "hasn't worked?" Child labor laws, minimum
wage, workplace safety regulations, etc, are all a result of
"socialism". If anyone in America still believes that letting big
business run the show without any regulatory oversight, just ask the
