24 years and counting |
The longest running religious debate of my life started in 1981 when a
bloke I was sharing a house with started telling me all about "The End
Times" prophecised in the bible. He and I have been at each other's
theological throats ever since, though strangely, we became, and remain
good friends.
In the time I've known him I've seen him go from rabid True Believer,
through mild luke-warm believer, to vaguely agnostic believer.
Today he came to see me and told me that he'd recently had a blazing
argument with his deeply religious parents about his apostasy, and was
looking for some ammunition to use against them. He was especially
interested in the pagan origins of Christianity - a subject that I'd
harangued him with many times over the years.
Thing is - I couldn't find anything to give him. All the stuff I'd
collected from various websites has long since been trashed, crashed, or
otherwise lost; old links no longer work; and I've forgotten the names
and sites where they came from.
There's a couple of lists in particular I wanted to find:
One was a list of pagan antecedents of Christ - Attis, Osiris, Mithras,
etc, and included similarities between these gods and Christ. Like
turning water into wine and so on.
Another was a list of which books were included or rejected from the
bible canon over the years, including the dates of their inclusion &/or
rejection.
Do these sound familiar to anyone? I know I originally found them via
this newsgroup. Any URLs would be greatly appreciated.
I may yet "save a soul". (Though part of me would be disappointed if he
gave up the fight - I'd have lost a sparring partner. And I've wondered
if our freindship would survive his de-conversion. What would we fight
about then?)

No, it's not ok. You violate the community standards and the baby jesus

Wow, I thought you were channeling barney the dinosaur there for a

The baby jesus loves flamethrowers too. He loves the smell of napalm in

Mmmmmm. Crispy.

My my, you are an ignorant little twit, aren't you?
The newsgroup exists *because of* the community that created it and the
FAQ roughly represents the goals of that creation.
You fail to grasp the basics - this is a newsgroup created BY atheists
FOR DISCUSSION of matters related to atheism.
Not for some fuckhead to use as a forum for delivering drive-by
shootings.
Repeat after me; hatred... is... a... weakness!
But the warm crackle of the flamethrower warms the cockles of baby
jesus' heart, so can it be bad? it makes the baby jesus pudgy little
face smile so ;-)
And I don't hate him - I just think he's a wanker, whoever he was. He can
reform. There's a difference.
The flambe is more a warning to the next potential transgressor.
You gotta ask yourself - have you offended the baby jesus today?
Well, do ya feel lucky, punk?
Oh man, small ***** you have?
Sentence construction master not young jedi?
Are you a fourth-grader or is it that you just can't speak english very
well due to your parents being too closely related?
Or are you another one of the english-as-second-language posters that
seem to come from third-world countries with largely illiterate xtian
converts?
Do enlighten us.

You are a moron...
Glad to see you've got your intellectual position so thoroughly staked
out. Pathetic.
But.. at least you're trying to make a point, even if you're deluded.

In the english speaking world we spell "weakness" with two 'S's.
Your english skills really ain't up to snuff, are they kiddo?
But thankyou for the karma advice, even if you had.. to.. type.. it..
slowly..
And as for being a "weak atheist", there's several ways to interpret that -
I'm an atheist with a weak acceptance of the concept?
I'm an atheist and I'm "weak" (pathetic etc slang)
Dictionary.com has at least ten candidates for 'weak'. If you're going to
insult me at least you could be a little more specific than 'weak'.
For example, "You're a fucking moron too stupid to get the ***** out of the
way when the flamethrower is warming up your crotch."
Or "You're the worst example of fundies defending each others indefensible
behavior and views, based on nothing more than the dogma you were both
raised on as children."
Be *specific*. Calling the baby jesus "weak" is.. well... weak.

explains it.

A half-wit would find that the vast majority of the information atheists
pass to others comes from the work done by people of faith who have not
allowed the truth to distroy this faith.
We don't acquire PhD's in language, history, religion, and archeology and
dedicate our lives to discover these things. People of faith do.
Apparently you don't quite reach the half-wit standard.

You may have to google around for this.
One of the primary sources for thsi was an old book called
16 crucified saviors by Kersey Graves, but it is not
really reliable. A fair number of books on the subject have
been printed some of doubtful scholarship.

Three virtually unknown authorities used in this book are Godfrey
Higgins (1771-1834), an early English mythologist who, through
groundbreaking studies of ancient writings, sought freedom from
the exclusivism and dogmatism of Christianity; Gerald Massey
(1828-1907) an American, who studied Egyptian mythology and
there discovered antecedents to images and themes appearing in
the Hebrew Bible and New Testament; and Alvin Boyd Kuhn
(1880-1963) another American, who pursued extensive academic
research into the origins of religious symbols and meanings. His
work, though esoteric to untrained eyes, convinced Harpur of the
validity of Egyptian sources for much of what appears in the
Jewish and Christian scriptures
I found that googling: books, christian, pagan precedents
got a pretty rich response to check out.

Osiris and Pagan Resurrection Myths: Assessing the Till-McFall
Exchange

Mark McFall asked my opinion of an ongoing debate he has been
having with Farrell Till. As a degreed expert on ancient
history, my assessment of the most recent exchange in the
Mar-May 2002 issue of In the Word is that, overall, Till and
McFall are both right and both wrong. Before I discuss this,
however, disclosure is appropriate: I am an atheist and have
also written an online essay on pagan parallels and ideas of
resurrection, the historical merit of the evidence for the
reality of Christ's resurrection generally, and the case for the
Pauline notion of a spiritual resurrection: see "Why I Don't Buy
the Resurrection Story" 2000
(http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/richard_carrier/resurrection/lecture.html).
Everything I say below draws on what is presented in that essay
or on my own personal experience in ancient history.

Kersey Graves and "The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors" (2003)
Carrier explains some of the essential reasons to distrust the
information in The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors by Kersey
Graves.
Review of "The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark" (2000)
This is an incredible book that must be read by everyone with an
interest in Christianity. Dennis MacDonald's shocking thesis is
that the Gospel of Mark is a deliberate and conscious anti-epic,
an inversion of the Greek "Bible" of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey,
which in a sense "updates" and Judaizes the outdated heroic
values presented by Homer, in the figure of a new hero, Jesus
(whose name, of course, means "Savior"). His evidence is
surprisingly solid and pervasive, and the implications for the
historicity of Christ are profound.
