occur in Iraq. A miliary helicoptor went down yesterday in calif.

Not true. Ever hear of sweeps? Of search-and-destroy missions? Of
hunt-and-kill patrols? During most of the Vietnam War, American
military forces operated at will everywhere within country. The
problem in Vietnam was (1)a large portion of the country is covered by
triple-canopy jungle and (2) the enemy could simply cross the border
and escape (just as they now do in Iraq). The operations, however, and
even the weapons, were similar to Iraq. The problem was that if you
can't see or find the enemy, you can't kill it. It's one hell of lot
easier to locate enemy in a desert than it is in a jungle.
In Iraq you are allowed to
go after the bad guys anywhere, in nam you couldn't cross certain
lines like the bad guys could.
You couldn't go into Cambodia or Laos, but we regularly did anyway.
You have the find the enemy to engage it, though.

What the hell are you rambling about? The huey went down in a training
exercise. It was the kind of accident that regularly happens with
choppers, because, basically, choppers suck. It had nothing to do with
the benighted policies of the current administration, which is what
"liberals" and an increasing number of people who would never call
themselves "liberals" are concerned about. I care about GIs, by the
way. I care because I'm a veteran and a liberal. I care because I know
the brass in Army aviation will, with the help of their ever-present
contractors, cover up the real reason the 4 GIs died, which is
probably an equipment failure. As I said, helicopters suck, especially
old hueys.

The GOP chickenhawks are all buisy bashing Howard Dean right now because
they didn't like the way he rallied his troops. The Bushies didn't like the
way he was able to correctly pronounce the names of states Dubya didn't even
know existed.
