Drug and gay sex claims topple pastor with 30 million followers
From James Bone in New York
Haggard preaches in front of a video image of himself
LURID allegations of sex trysts and drug use with a gay prostitute have
forced one of America's leading Christian conservatives to resign as head of
a 30 million-strong evangelical movement.
The Rev Ted Haggard, 50, a married father of five, stepped down as president
of the National Association of Evangelicals after a self-described male
escort went on the radio to accuse him of paying for gay sex.
With his chiselled features and wide smile, Mr Haggard was a poster boy for
the evangelical movement and social conservative causes.
The blue jeans-wearing "Pastor Ted", who keeps an electronic Bible in his
Palm Pilot, is one of a new breed of evangelical Christians with close White
House ties who have played a key political role in electing the Republican
Party to power.
A national leader of the campaign to outlaw same-sex marriage, Mr Haggard
reportedly speaks to President Bush or his advisers every week.
He is the latest in a long tradition of Christian leaders - such as Jim
Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart - who have been exposed for sexual indiscretions
in this land of preachers.
Mike Jones, 49, a former male escort who now works as a personal trainer,
went public on a Colorado radio show with claims that Mr Haggard had
regularly paid him $200 a time for sex sessions over the past three years.
Mr Jones, once a competitive bodybuilder, said that he met Mr Haggard when
he responded to an advertisement he had listed on a gay escort website
called rentboy.com.
He said that Mr Haggard would send him cash in envelopes marked with the
name "Art" and also asked him to get "crystal meth", an addictive
methamphetamine popular with gay men for its aphrodisiac qualities.
Mr Jones said that he only learnt who "Art" really was when he saw Mr
Haggard interviewed on a documentary about the Anti-Christ when the film of
The Da Vinci Code film was released this year.
He said that he decided to speak out because Mr Haggard was leading the
campaign for a state constitutional amendment in Tuesday's vote that would
bar gay marriage in Colorado. "I felt it was my responsibility to my fellow
brothers and sisters, that I had to take a stand, and I cannot sit back
anymore and hear [what] to me is an anti-gay message." he said.
Mr Haggard initially denied the allegations. He told local TV: "I've never
had a gay relationship with anybody, and I'm steady with my wife. I'm
faithful to my wife." But Ross Parsley, the interim pastor at his church in
Colorado Springs, said that Mr Haggard had admitted to some but not all the
claims. "There has been some admission of indiscretion . . . there is an
admission of some guilt," Mr Parsley said.
After Mr Jones released taped telephone messages yesterday, Mr Haggard
admitted that he had gone to Mr Jones for "a massage" and bought crystal
meth - an illicit stimulant - from him, but insisted the two did not have
sex. "I did call him. I called him to buy some meth, but I threw it away. I
was buying it for me, but I never used it," he told local TV.
Mr Haggard was appointed president of the evangelicals association in March
2003.
The pastor has participated in conservative Christian leaders' conference
calls with White House staffers and lobbied members of Congress last year on
appointees to the US Supreme Court after Sandra Day O'Connor announced her
retirement.

In 1988 officials from his church were given photographs showing him taking
a prostitute to a Louisiana motel. She told a New Orleans TV show that they
had not had sex, although he liked to watch her undress.

Christians don't follow leaders. Haven't you read Martin Luther? Each
Christian is his own priest. They don't need or use leaders.
Consequently it is irrelevant if some Pastor or so-called Leader is an
*****. Christians true leader is Jesus Christ. They are suppose to
make their own decisions. Unfortunately there is the sheep mentality
which infects man. Some people like to others do their thinking for
them.
Also why are posting this to a Catholic newsgroup? Don't you know the
difference between Evangelism and Catholism?

No, I am talking about concepts. Luther stated the Reformation of the
Church. He espoused the Priesthood of all believers. These tenants
were the start of the Protestent Church which morphed into the
fundamental and Evangelical Christian movements. I agree with the
concepts. The man is irrelevant. He is also very dead. The only

Your post is irrelevant. The issue is that Martin Luther started the
reformation of the Church. You want to focus on ad hominem attacks to
discredit someone's idea. You ending up throwing out the baby with the
bath water. Luther changed the course of history. He was also a
product of his time. It is easy to judge someone without having to

It was pure, unabashed, naked, political greed. That's your so-called

As one of America's founding fathers said so eloquently, "All national

Yes we do. The power of the Catholic Church was temporarily reduced by
the Reformation... and increased right back again during the
Counter-Reformation and the Thirty Years War which killed 1 out of 4
people in Central Europe. It took temporal power away from one
religious organization and put in the hands of several others. John
Calvin's Geneva was Europe's first genuine theocratic dictatorship.

The whole concept
of a worldly church leader was challenged.
This was the start the
movement against organized religion and placed the onus of choosing

Just the opposite. The Reformation revived the Constintinan concept of
"Cuius regio, eius religio", which meant that the state religion was
identical to the religion of the ruler and he was given the authority
to dictate this through force as his leisure. In fact, non-Lutheran
Protestants, such as Calvinists and Anabaptists in Lutheran states
still faced heresy charges. The so-called "Reformation" *increased*
religious power within nations, not decreased it as you fraudulently
claim because now local religious figures were able to expand their
power with fewer checks on their authority. The first truly effective
decrease in the religious power of a nation was with the ratification
of the United States Constitution in 1787.

This increased the power of the individual rulers who weren't bound to
Rome for support. Consequently you moved closer to a local government
which was influenced by the people. In other words, this was a step
closer to democracy. This was crucial in limiting the control of the
Church. Luther lessened the clergy's monopoly of the Religion. He
translated the Bible into a language the people could understand.
Couple this with the idea that each believe was his own priest
liberated the masses. Luther was an important step toward freedom of
the common man.

Changing religious power from one leader to another isn't lessening
power, which is what you're claiming. If I divide a quart of liquid
into 1 ounce bottles, I still have 32 ounces of liquid.
That the people were forced to follow Luther, or some other leader,
instead of the Pope, didn't make them any less subject to religious
power, it just made them subject to DIFFERENT religious power.

Consequently you moved closer to a local government
which was influenced by the people.

Nonsense - Lutheranism wasn't influenced by the people any more than
Catholicism was.

Luther lessened the clergy's monopoly of the Religion.

Luther lessened ROME'S monopoly and replaced with a Protestant
monopoly.

The Peasants' War was opposed by Luther. Consequently, your statements

separation of Church and State. This may surprise you but most
fundamental Christians believe that is Biblical or part of Church

alone feed its continued warfare,
not strategy, not goals,
and not prestige.
Only stupefying inertia.
Two sister countries are now
ocked in such choke holds.
The United States in Iraq,
and Israel in the territories.
Washington has ostensibly achieved
everything it set out to in Iraq:
Saddam Hussein was toppled,
a new government was established
by democratic elections,
Iraq is no longer the
strategic threat it was.
And the result:
total destruction.
Because under the "new order"
that has been set up,
there is no country.
It is as if someone planned its
destruction so that it would,
in any case, no longer be a threat.
Hundreds of thousands of
civilians have been killed,
millions have fled,
and there is no education,
legal or welfare system to
speak of.
The arms market is flourishing
and no one can count the number
of gangs, militias and terror cells
freely operating there.
Even Iran has been called in to help.
The Americans are now talking
to the heads of the militias,
those terrorists who continue
to cut down their victims
indiscriminately.
The only remaining goal in this
war is to get out quickly.
After more than 2,000 U.S.
soldiers have been killed,
they are seeking the volunteer
who will be willing to take over
responsibility for the turf.
About 1,000 kilometers west of Bagdhad,
Israel is stuck in a matching choke hold.
Here, too, ostensibly,
there have been achievements:
the Hamas government is not functioning,
the world boycotted it, as Israel wanted,
there is no dialogue with terror and
no pressure to jump-start a diplomatic
process.
But the Israel Defense Forces computer
is already on overload from the names
of the operations the army is raining
down on a few dozen square kilometers
and a million and a half people in Gaza.
They talk about the "widespread action"
that is planned, and which is already
being carried out.
Hundreds of
"senior wanted men"
have been killed.
Border crossings re blocked.
Civilians,
activists or armed men are
being killed every day.
It is as if the battles against the
IDF and among the gangs and the
organizations have been copied
from Iraq.
The education and welfare systems
have collapsed, and the economy
is a theoretical term.
Here, too, like Iraq,
they are talking about
the need to find someone,
a terrorist or a mafioso,
who will take responsibility
for Gaza.
Avigdor Lieberman's proposal over
the weekend did sound unrealistic:
He suggested doing in Gaza
what Russia did in Chechnya -
finding a local hero and
cutting a deal with him.
It might not be long before
his idea suddenly starts seeming logical.
What keeps the U.S. and Israel
choking on their own power?
Whirling in that centrifuge
as if there was no other way?
Ostensibly,
it is that same need to
achieve the victory, and get out.
The strategic goals have been forgotten,
the original conflict has been dwarfed
into a gang war,
and the most important question
is what individual high up on
the wanted list will be taken
out tomorrow.
Just like the head count of the
Al-Qaida activists killed in
Afghanistan or the number of
terrorists killed in Iraq.
There is a solution to the sorry
situation of the two countries.
But it is a terrible one from
a political point of view.
In Iraq it would mean a
full American withdrawal,
a full confession of failure,
maybe even a Republican loss
in the elections,
Iraq's coming under the direct
influence of Iran and the division
of its territory into federated
districts.
Perhaps it will also mean a
change in policy toward Iran,
to ensure that Iraq will not
once again become a strategic
threat.
In Israel it means returning
to the convergence plan,
dialogue with the Hamas government,
the realization that it will not
recognize Israel and making do
with a truce more or less of
some years' duration.
In both cases it means giving
up principles that seemed
reasonable before the war,
but are now a stumbling block
to ending it.
The question now is only when
the sense of choking generated by
these principles will be translated
into a logical policy.
The U.S. has started turning blue.
Israel still does not understand
how tight the noose is getting.

Drug and gay sex claims topple pastor with 30 million followers
From James Bone in New York

Haggard preaches in front of a video image of himself

LURID allegations of sex trysts and drug use with a gay prostitute
have forced one of America's leading Christian conservatives to
resign as head of a 30 million-strong evangelical movement.

The Rev Ted Haggard, 50, a married father of five, stepped down as
president of the National Association of Evangelicals after a
self-described male escort went on the radio to accuse him of paying
for gay sex.
With his chiselled features and wide smile, Mr Haggard was a poster
boy for the evangelical movement and social conservative causes.

The blue jeans-wearing "Pastor Ted", who keeps an electronic Bible in
his Palm Pilot, is one of a new breed of evangelical Christians with
close White House ties who have played a key political role in
electing the Republican Party to power.
A national leader of the campaign to outlaw same-sex marriage, Mr
Haggard reportedly speaks to President Bush or his advisers every
week.
He is the latest in a long tradition of Christian leaders - such as
Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart - who have been exposed for sexual
indiscretions in this land of preachers.

Mike Jones, 49, a former male escort who now works as a personal
trainer, went public on a Colorado radio show with claims that Mr
Haggard had regularly paid him $200 a time for sex sessions over the
past three years.
Mr Jones, once a competitive bodybuilder, said that he met Mr Haggard
when he responded to an advertisement he had listed on a gay escort
website called rentboy.com.

He said that Mr Haggard would send him cash in envelopes marked with
the name "Art" and also asked him to get "crystal meth", an addictive
methamphetamine popular with gay men for its aphrodisiac qualities.

Mr Jones said that he only learnt who "Art" really was when he saw Mr
Haggard interviewed on a documentary about the Anti-Christ when the
film of The Da Vinci Code film was released this year.

He said that he decided to speak out because Mr Haggard was leading
the campaign for a state constitutional amendment in Tuesday's vote
that would bar gay marriage in Colorado. "I felt it was my
responsibility to my fellow brothers and sisters, that I had to take
a stand, and I cannot sit back anymore and hear [what] to me is an
anti-gay message." he said.
Mr Haggard initially denied the allegations. He told local TV: "I've
never had a gay relationship with anybody, and I'm steady with my
wife. I'm faithful to my wife." But Ross Parsley, the interim pastor
at his church in Colorado Springs, said that Mr Haggard had admitted
to some but not all the claims. "There has been some admission of
indiscretion . . . there is an admission of some guilt," Mr Parsley
said.
After Mr Jones released taped telephone messages yesterday, Mr Haggard
admitted that he had gone to Mr Jones for "a massage" and bought
crystal meth - an illicit stimulant - from him, but insisted the two
did not have sex. "I did call him. I called him to buy some meth, but
I threw it away. I was buying it for me, but I never used it," he
told local TV.
Mr Haggard was appointed president of the evangelicals association in
March 2003.

The pastor has participated in conservative Christian leaders'
conference calls with White House staffers and lobbied members of
Congress last year on appointees to the US Supreme Court after Sandra
Day O'Connor announced her retirement.

PULPIT SHAME

Martin Gorman
In 1986 was accused by rival evangelist Jimmy Lee Swaggart of "immoral
dalliances". He unsucessfully sued Swaggart for spreading false
rumours
Jim Bakker
In 1987 was exposed by Jimmy Lee Swaggart for committing adultery with
Jessica Hahn, a minister and secretary. Sacked from his multi-million
dollar job presenting Praise the Lord.

Jimmy Lee Swaggart
In 1988 officials from his church were given photographs showing him
taking a prostitute to a Louisiana motel. She told a New Orleans TV
show that they had not had sex, although he liked to watch her
undress.
Oral Roberts
Operator of a TV ministry in Tulsa, who broadcast that God would
"call Oral Roberts home" unless believers donated $4.5 million. He
survived, but was heavily criticised for his approach to fundraising.

Jerry Falwell
Subject of a merciless parody in an advertisement in Hustler magazine
that implied that he had lost his virginity to his mother in an
outhouse while they were "drunk off our God-fearing asses on
Campari". Falwell sued, unsuccessfully.
