BLAIR DENIES CONVERSION
Tony Blair has denied newspaper reports he is considering converting to Roman
Catholicism.
The Prime Minister, who is an Anglican, is currently in Hungary for talks with
other leaders.
The reports were sparked by remarks made by Father Timothy Russ, the priest who
presides over communion at Chequers.
Fr Russ was reported as saying: "If you ask me do you think he wants to become a
Catholic, I would say yes."
The priest said Mr Blair had even asked him: "Can the Prime Minister of Britain
be a Catholic?"
But today in Hungary, he dismissed the claim.
He told reporters: "I am saying no. Don't they run this once a year? I think
they do. Every year I get this."
Mr Blair has consistently denied he plans to become a Catholic like his wife
Cherie and three of their children.
On Thursday night he used a speech to the progressive governance summit in
Budapest to send strong messages on welfare reform and Europe.
He also stressed that Europe and America should work together in the wake of the
Iraq conflict.
The war, which divides leaders gathered for the summit, was not on the agenda.
