Wow, they stepped right into the Twilight Zone. Doesn't the
Bible proscribe stoning infidels to death? The article doesn't
say but I assume this is a public school. What a bunch of
anti-American freaks these phony Christians are.

Boy oh boy, could I tell you some stuff. But many of you know what's been
done to me out here in Marinette County, WI already.
Having posted some horrific reports concerning my treatment out here,
however, I have to balance that a bit with the fact that there is a
Presbyterian minister who knows what's going on and is having no part of it.
There *are* good Christians in the area, I've finally discovered. Not every
person who believes in Jesus wants to tar and feather atheists.
I would just like to say that anyone who could stand by and side with those
folks who refuse to put an end to my misery are as immoral as otherwise
'decent' folks can get.
I'm sure we've all seen that footage of a 100-year old plus woman being
assaulted by some piece of human filth some time back. It sent outrage
rushing through your body, didn't it? Well what's going on out here is a
variant of that depraved behavior. Only this time, it's a collection of area
residents and their County puppet-masters perpetrating the inhumane 'crime'.
And you can be sure that there is no rush to make things 'right' -- or even
discuss it at a town meeting -- anytime soon. I wish it weren't true. But
the facts are the facts. These are amoral people out here.
As for standing outside a circle while others 'pray': I did just that while
in an alcoholic treatment center several years ago. I held hands while the
other 'clients' said the 'Serenity Prayer' out of a spirit of compromise,
but refused to take part in the 'Lord's Prayer'. I was also obliged to take
my turn and say a 'prayer' before a formal meal on occasion. (Pssst. They
weren't 'real' prayers I said. They only *sounded* like prayers')
How would the bible believers feel if -- out of a sense of fair play and
'balance' -- *they* had to continue bow their heads and hold hands while
selected passages of Dawkins' 'The God Delusion' were read aloud -- or even
be made to take turns reading those passages aloud themselves?! No? Well
then why should the atheist be obliged to participate in clearly religious
ritual when the atheist is .... well, an *atheist*!! Try putting yourself in
the atheist's shoes. I *was*, after all, in a clinic to combat my
alcoholism -- not in a church to worship Jesus!
You Christians talk about being 'persecuted' because you can't hold
devotional services a public school just yet. If you want to talk about
'real' persecution: Try living in a community filled with phony-baloney
Christians who feel it's perfectly fine to heap as much unpleasantness on
you as they can -- and just kiss the feet of the corrupt politicians who are
encouraging them to do so. Now we're talkin' 'persecution'!

Yeah, I think Sam Harris (End of Faith) got it right when he blamed
moderate Christians for tolerating and thereby enabling the

Not the whole country - mostly the Bible Belt, the
midwest and our nation's capitol. But, things are
finally starting to change. It would be nice if the
residents of other countries that we really did help
when it was needed were there when things start
to pick up here again. We agree with your
complaints, but we're sick of hearing them. This
was a civilized country once. It will be again.

Ah, yet another dose of nostalgic "good old days" crap.
There aren't more fundy christians now than there used
to be, they don't have a tighter grip on society, you just
notice them more the same way you see every murder
in every little town now that there's 24-hour news
channels. You're forgetting that the fundie foolery
that makes you point and shake your head has been
the norm for most of these communities since they
were founded, it isn't some symptom of a rising
theocracy.

You a little right and a little wrong. Fundy foolery has been on the
rise for about 30 years, as far as the halls of power in the US are
concerned. As far as these podunk communities, it is only apparent
because they have someone to react against, rather than just
peacefully agreeing with each other because ALL of them were of the
same mindset.

What was Herbert Hoover's religion? What was the
religion of those inhabiting state capital buildings
when the Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of
the Eagles and other groups successfully campaigned
to put Ten Commandments monuments on public land?

What's mainly happening is that the ostracized person,
instead of getting beat down and staying silent, has
access to ideas of non-fundies across the nation and
the ability to be heard. Even thirty years ago a
non-fundie youth growing up in these hinterlands might
never encounter anyone else that was publicly like them.

I meant that their power startered to wane in the 50s, but has been on
the upswing since about 1977.

I think they've got a long way to upswing before they
start approaching the power they had in the 1930's.

I love this part:
"Nicole said that once she told peers at school that she was an
atheist, her relationship with the other kids changed. "You know they
would call me devil worshipper. I'd walk down the halls, people would
laugh at me. They would look at me really weird and stare me down."
Then, according to Nicole, the teachers also began harassing her, one
going as far as to say, "This is a Christian country, and if you don't
like it, get out."
Diane Summerford is a substitute teacher at the high school Nicole
attends and is married to one of the town's religious leaders, Pastor
Truman Summerford. She said there was no discrimination against
Nicole. "I have never seen anything in the school where the kids
treated Nicole badly. We have good kids that care, and they are good
Christian kids."
And as for the game-end tradition, Pastor Summerford said, "It is
still a free country we are living in today. And our young people are
standing up for their faith as they do this." "
"Good Christians" who poke fun at other students and hate them because
they don't conform. There are few things that spur people more towards
intolerance and bigotry than freethinking. It's a good thing lynching
is no longer in vogue; I'm sure these stout Christians would be the
first to put up the rope.

I liked
---
"School administrators said Nicole was bad for team morale and that she'd stolen
another student's sneakers, so their reasons for kicking her off were fair.
Nicole claims the charges they made were unfounded.
A year later, Nicole was allowed back on the team. This time, when the prayer
started, she stayed outside the circle. "I just stood outside of it and said the
Pledge of Allegiance … Without the 'under God.'"
The next school day, Nicole was suspended -- this time, she was accused of
threatening to kill a team member. But according to Nicole, she never said that.

What putrid people. This is clear evidence how ill conceived and fragile their
religious beliefs are that a single non-believer can cause such problems for
them. I bet that if they weren't such bastards to this child that the father
never would have sued against their religious practices during school but he was
not going to let them crucify his daughter for their sins.

You know, I grew up as a known athiest in a small bible-belt
town. I never had these problems. You know why ? Because I
was never an ***** about it.
I suspect we're not hearing part of this story, the part
about how Nichole & family were serious ASSHOLES about their
atheism, probably disrespecting and/or trying to put the
screws to their religious neighbors and local institutions.
Oooooh - they PRAYED at basketball games ! How TERRIBLE !!!
End of the world !!! Get a grip Nichole ...
A overzealous athiest is every bit as noxious as a religious
zealot, sowing hatred and discord wherever they go.
While it's not a "christian country", it IS a country with
lots and lots of christians. Be nice - not because you HAVE
to, but because it's the right thing to do. The old "Do unto
others" dictum is not a "religious" ideal but a HUMAN ideal
emphasizing the value of empathy. Try it sometime Nikki.
Treat the christians as you would want them to treat you
instead of as "the enemy".

And she doesn't even realize how bigoted that statement is. That's
why the kids are the way they are - their parents don't think there's
anything wrong with the idea that Christian means good and
non-Christian means, at best, "who cares what they think".

I've known classy, intelligent Okies.

Most of them probably will - not realizing that the same god that
spared them killed everyone who died. But some are only there
because, for whatever reason, they have no choice.

They DO! Every time a tornado destroys a town in Kansas or Joklamhoma, some
yahoo says that god was watching out for him and that is why he is still alive.
They're so dumb that they don't realize that that implies therefore that god
was NOT watching out for the people that died.

Yep. Christians are such liars and hypocrites. The more they bray and prattle
mindlessly about "love" the more idiotic they look.
