A film right up our alley here |
Because I greatly enjoy Billy Connolly and happened to see a couple of
his films on DVD, I picked them up. Last night I watched _The Man Who
Sued God_ , in which Connolly plays a former lawyer become a fisherman
whose boat is destroyed by lightening. The insurance company writes it
off as an "act of god", a _very_ convenient device for avoiding
payment, so Connolly brings a suit that can only be won by the
churches if they take the strong atheistic position (something they
are disinclined to do as likely having a negative impact upon their
cash flow).
I have invited a priest friend over to watch it.
Incidentally, the best of the "church fathers" is a Rabbi who has more
of a sense of humor about these matters than, say, the less
established chaps. At one meeting of the "representatives of the
defendant" he comments, "I think we should be praying."
"To God?" another asks.
"For better lawyers," he replies.
Through a jaundiced eye darkly--rheum with a view.

Interesting concept. I think I'll go rent it myself.
I'm curious though, if most insurance companies wouldn't pay such
a claim. Do they distinguish between a fire started by lightning and
one started by faulty wiring? What about for a house? If a house
gets hit by lightning and it starts a fire and the house burns up, is
it covered?

If you are paying a morgage...probably as the insurance company knows
they are better off than suing the mortgage company, if you are
not...it depends on whether or not you can sue them if they avoid
paying you. We may ***** about America become litigous, but it
wouldn't be needed if insurance companies weren't slimy pricks.

Yeah, it's a pretty good movie.
