NICOSIA (AFP) - A Greek Orthodox priest has been suspended in Cyprus
after allegations he broke his sacred vows by using information from
confessions to blackmail those who confided in him, media reports said.
The priest allegedly collected his flock's dark secrets and then
deployed Turkish Cypriots to extort money from unsuspecting members of
his parish.
Married couples were usually targeted with the blackmailers threatening
to go public with their personal life if they refused to pay up,
according to reports.
Sigma TV quoted Paphos Bishop Chrysostomos as saying the unnamed priest
had been suspended following the allegations and the issue would be
probed by the church.
He said the matter would be on the agenda at the next Holy Synod
meeting.
