A harem in heaven. |
Picture a society in which men can have up to four wives. Maybe there
wouldn't be a lot of men who could afford four wives, but there would
be plenty who could afford two. For each man who takes a second wife,
there is a young man who loses out, a young man who will never have
a wife of his own.
Now imagine that all sexual escape routes are sealed off ruthlesssly.
Prostitutes and adulteresses are stoned to death -- a young man
can't turn there for relief. And homosexuality will get the young
man himself stoned to death.
Now inmagine these desparate young men are told that simple suicide
will result in going to hell forever, but if they die fighting for
Islam they can have a harem in heaven. The result is a population
of young men who have less to live for than to die for. They'll be
willing to die killing infidels, by war or terrorism.
And the women can continue producing future warriors and terrorists at
full speed even when a large fraction of the men have died in wars.
There will always be plenty of boys coming of age, ready to die
fighting infidels.
Invasions and terrorism in the name of Islam are not merely accidental
byproducts of a peaceful religion.
Islam was *designed* to do this.

What's "insanely stupid" about it? All polygamous societies are
nortoriously warfaring; war *is* the safety valve by which polygamous
societies disposed of their young, rootless men. Islam seems to have
evolved (quite literally) an intense vision for those men with promises
of more in heaven of what they can't possibly get on Earth.
Here's a counter-idea: if men have ruled our "Western" culture
for the past two thousand years, why is Christianity, a patriarchial
religion if ever there was one, primarily interested in monogamy? The
tradition of monogamy can only be a feature of culture imposed by men
for men.

Polyandric societies are generally male dominated as well.
Most societies are male dominated.
Same with the apes.

Polyandric societies are generally male dominated as well.
Can you name one?
Here's a hint: Of 1231 independent social groupings identified
in the Encyclopedia of Anthropology, 186 were monogamous, 588 were
universally polgynous, 453 had polygny reserved for the powerful, and 4
were polyandrous.
Of the polyandrous groups, the overwhelming cause of polyandry
is the need for the retention of wealth within kin groups when one or
more males are away for long periods of time, such as driving cattle or
caravaning or sea voyaging. Such arrangement only happen in
exceptionally materially poor societies.
But the majority of human beings don't live under such
conditions, which still begs the question: why would men choose to
institutionalize monogamy?

What is so stupid about it? Those guys are always talking about doing their
72 virgins once they get to heaven after they set off their suicide bombs.

"Those guys" represent what percentage of the faith?
Where have "those guys" said it was just to have virgins?
The few who have said it would probably have never though of a woman as a
person and never had much experience. I'd rather learn than teach.
But "those guys" would probably be smart enough to not top post.

By "those guys" of course, you're talking mostly about American
comedians and internet pundits.
Very few of the suicide bombers actually believe in the whole "72
virgins" thing, and it's not the reason they do it.

believe it. I suppose now you'll tell me otherwise.

For God and country. To drive the foreigner from their homeland and protect
their way of life Same reason's we give.
The difference is that, at least in the early days, these were middle class,
educated people, who thought about what they were doing rather than lower
class high school educated kids who joined the army because they could not
get a job at Wal-Mart.

Religion is a facilitator not a reason. Without the reward in paradise
they would find another way.

Sure. The most widespread use of suicide bombing was by the Tamil
Tigers in Sri Lanka, and they could hardly be described as religious.

Accordingly though women are not allowed in heaven so where do these
virgins come from?
In Islamic society women are for babies and boys are for sex. This I
learned from many a discussion with people that actually lived in
these societies while I was working in Islamic middle-eastern
countries. I did not learn what seperates a boy from a man though so
on this point I admit my ignorance on the difference.

The thiest/diest defense:
1)I believe in god, ergo god exists
2)I believe in god, ergo I know what god wills, wants, the path to god, etc.
3)I believe in god, ergo I am right/correct
4)You don't agree with me, you are wrong (see 1,2,and/or 3 above)
5)You dont' beleive as I do then you are wrong (see 1,2,and/or 3 above)
6)You want proof of god? (see 1,2,and/or 3 above)
7)You have evidence god does not exist (see 1,2,and/or 3 above)
8)If you don't believe as I do you are wrong (see 1,2,and/or 3 above)
There was no "before" the beginning of our universe, because once upon a time there was no time.

Question #1: If I get im my spaceship and fly to the very edge of the universe what do I see out the front window?
Since I have learned that the known universe that we speak of, the one that is billions of years old, is just a speck on the entirety of the physical universe that expanded 2^100 in size within moments of the creation of the entirety of space/time, I must conclude that the patch of it that we can perceive is like a grain of sand upon a beach and therefore other macro universes such as ours also exist outside of our ability to perceive them.
Question #2: What is the most mass/matter that a black hole can obsorb and what happens after it reaches that point and trys to absorb more matter?
