A Hobbit ( or is it an Android) Becomes Pope! |
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4637765.stm
reveals that "British actor Sir Ian Holm is to play Pope John Paul II
in a television mini-series."
Ian Holm is probably best known recently for his portray of Bilbo
Baggins in the "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy. Prior to that he was
probably best known for his portray of the dysfunctional (or perhaps
too efficiently functional) android in the first of the "Alien"
trilogy, but he's made over a hundred movies, including "Henry V",
"Juggernaut", "Brazil", and "The Aviator".
He played a priest in "The Fifth Element", so he does have some
experience!
So what kind of Pope will he play? A Pope who obsesses about his ring,
like Bilbo, or one who's so intent on pursuing his prime directive that
he'll kill people to get there, like Ash?!!

He also played Bernard Samson in the TV version of Len Deighton's
"Game, Set, and Match" spy series, so he's also experienced at
playing someone ruthless, murderous, and two-faced.
