A sad day |
I was distressed earlier today to learn of the passing of John Ritter and
Johnny Cash. While Ritter wasn't one of my favorite actors, he did have a
role in one of my favorite movies of all time, the terrific Sling Blade. He
was so good in that movie that I didn't even recognize him until somebody
pointed him out.
Johnny Cash was probably my favorite country singer, and was one of the
greatest artists ever. He could take any song and make it his own, which
attests to his great talent, and was an incredible and highly influential
songwriter as well. He was also a fellow Arkansan.
The world is a less happy place today.

Sometimes God takes those closest to us, because it makes him feel better
about himself. He is a very vengeful God. He's all ***** about
something we did thousands of years ago. He just can't get over it, so he
doesn't care who he takes. Children, puppies, it don't matter to him, so
long as it makes us sad...God gives us life and love and help just so that
he can tear it all away and make us cry, so he can drink the sweet milk of
our tears. You see, it's our tears that give God his great power.

I know what you mean. I'm not a great Country fan, but I liked Johnny
Cash. We are losing a lot of great ones this year.

Last week it was Zevon... now Cash. Who's gonna write the good songs
now?

John Ritter must have been one of the nicest people in the acting
field. I'm getting a physical soon, and I'll ask for tests for aortic
dissection.
You don't have to be a country music fan to mourn Johnny Cash. I've
heard reports that he was a real person, and he hung in until the end.

I always found Ritter amusing, but Johnny Cash was one of the most
important musical figures (and a major cultural icon) of the 20th
century. What a loss, and coming on the heels of Warren Zevon as well.

Ritter was so good in Sling Blade that I wish he had had a chance to do more
work like that. He had recently finished filming another movie with Billy Bob
Thornton.
The local NPR station (WUOM) did an extended story relating to John Ritter's
death from aortic separation, interviewing a doctor from the University of
Michigan who taught seminars on diagnosing and treating them. It is an
unusual, but treatable condition, and unfortunately usually mistaken as
a 'typical' heart attack.

Not that I have ever been a fan of country music, but I always have admired
Johnny Cash.

On Sat, 13 Sep 2003 06:04:41 -0500, several witnesses claim to have
seen (Pat Kiewicz) scrawl a message on the wall:
Not that I have ever been a fan of country music, but I always have admired
Johnny Cash.
Cash crossed genre lines. "Folsom Prison" is a great song no matter
what kind of music you like, and "A Boy Named Sue" is one of the
funniest damn things I ever heard.
His recent covers of hard rock, including Soundgarden and Nine Inch
Nails proved that he was a true artist.
