A Simple Math Quiz |

So simple, a seven-year-old child could get eight out of eight, working
them all in his head. ;-)

Questions #6 and #8 are pretty stupid. It is obvious that the triangle
described in #6 is impossible and #8 is a system with two unknowns but only
one equation.
The second is not as bad as the first though since it happens all the time
in the real world that we encounter problems where insufficient information
is at hand.
But no one has ever seen a right isosceles triangle where the hypotenuse is
shorter than the legs as described by the problem statement.
Interesting though. Thanks, Fred. That's a few posts by you of late that
have been surprisingly refreshing. Any idea why this is topical now? The
test was given over 20 years ago! I see from Wikipedia that Tao's a finalist
for Aussie-of-the-year.

I also liked the one about the Muslim cashiers at Target and bacon. As
someone else said...those twits should be given a broom and asked if that
offended their moral sensibilities.
I sometimes wish we could vet out the political posts here, but even I get
caught up in it.

I figure those were trick questions.

You got me. The NYT decided to headline it. I ran across the link while
reading another article about CAIR.

Yeah, I get too worked up at all the outright falsehoods that get passed
round by the lefties here.

Yet you have no problem with the outright falsehoods that get passed round
by the righties here.
Personally, to me a lie is a lie and no matter if it's a lefty, righty,
moderate, or radical telling the lie, I don't like it.

You guys got them covered. I've expressed my opinions about right-wing
liars enough times.

Very impressive indeed for a seven year old, but no challenge to
anyone who has studied maths.

Questions 5,6,8 are not suitable for 7 year olds. 6 & 8 requires the student to realise that
something is missing while 5 is algebra question. I am impressed that he did that!
