Here are the winners for the Quote of the Month contest for November
2005.
AQOTM: Our winner this month got 11 votes. It was quote number 11.
Spooky, huh? Congratulations, eyelessgame!
11) [I]t is utterly ludicrous to suppose, even if a conscious thinking
entity were the cause of the universe, that a tribe of goatherders four
thousand years ago was contacted by it. Or that two thousand years
later, it mated with a human woman and then arranged for the offspring
to be murdered. Or that it cares about my sex life.
By: eyelessgame
Nominated: Enkidu the Atheist
Seconded: Ron Baker, Pluralitas!
*******
TQOTM: Our winner this month had competition, which is always healthy.
With 9 votes, our top Theist is Mary Hogan:
3) Reason is the bad guy, because one thing about the mind, it has a
hard time understanding what is really going on. Have you ever been in
a situation where you misread the whole scenario? Have you ever in your
life been hungry for something, only to find out when you get it, you
don't like it? Have you ever mad a choice about a person, place or thing
to find out your "truth" was wrong?
Reason is a string directly attached to the Accuser. That is why being
prepared with the truth, keeps one from being a sitting duck.
By: Mary Hogan
Nominated: Woden
Seconded: Hannele Huigens

Thanks! :) (blush) You like me! You really like me! Hey, every time a
quote of mine has been nominated, it's come in either first or third.
No doubt a Trinitarian Christian could find something significant in
that, though I hate to think what.
I do want to say -- the quote above was taken a bit out of context, and
it makes me feel a little (only a little) uncomfortable to have had it
made so prominent. In context, the word 'suppose' had a connotation a
little closer to 'presume' or 'conclude', as I was dealing with a
person trying to convince us of his brand of quasi-Christian religion
(and the supposed "incoherence" of not believing in his particular god)
based on the idea that the universe might have had a cause.
I'm perhaps a tad more tolerant about others' religious beliefs than
some of my fellow atheists -- and without the context which I'd
constructed for this quote, it's a bit more aggressive than the
positions I generally take.
That said, a bunch of you liked it, and who am I to question your
taste? :) I accept the award, and I do not plan to spend it all in one
place.
