aa - The Polls are open! AQOTM for April 2005 |
Getting ready for summer, but I keep getting hit by frost. And pollen.

4:30 AM. Yep, my vacation in a couple of weeks will be nice!
Here are the nominations for Atheist Quote of the Month for April 2005.
Vote for your favorite by responding to this thread. Votes will be
accepted until midnight, April 30. See rules below. Questions?

1) Who needs sanity when you've got Jesus?
By: Kevin Anthoney
Nominated: Jez
Seconded: Vic Sagerquist
------------
2) And then I said to God: "Do you do anything besides helping spoiled
professional athletes catch touchdown passes?" to which he replied: "Who
would you hang out with, The Cowboys cheerleaders or "Dr" Jason Gasbag?"
By: Yang
Nominated: Secular Fundamentalist
Seconded: Harry F. Leopold
------------
3) Re: Strengthened Xian faith after 9/11:
It's a sign that they're being persecuted for being Christian (not
because some of the U.S. policies have actually struck a dischordant
note with the Arab muslim populace of certain regions of the world).
Ergo, since they have themselves deluded into believing that the world
only picks on people who are 100% correct, they have themselves deluded
by extension of this into believing that they are 100% correct even
_more_ so than they did before.
It's all very "meme"-oriented stuff. The Christian meme has
evolved_spectacular_ adaptive mechanisms over the millenia. Things
going good? It's because God likes you, and therefore your faith is
100% correct. Things going bad? It's because God is testing you, and
since he doesn't bother testing heathens your faith must therefore be
100% correct. People picking on you? It's because you're a Christian
and not simply because you are a tyrranical, pompous *****, and therefore
your faith must be 100% correct. Things going "so-so"? It's because
you've been faithful and haven't "rocked the boat", so to speak, and
therefore your faith must be 100% correct.
It's a virtually impregnable fortress. It's actually kind of awesome in
a sick, convoluted "train-wreck" sort of way.

4) While I am an atheist and therefore not the praying type, I do wish
said beloved pontiff a full and speedy recovery. Just as McDonalds
needs its clown and Disneyland needs its mouse, the Catholic church
would be no fun at all without its High Wizard. And given his office's
(albeit waning) power to sway the minds of the great unwashed, I much
prefer the present doddering old codger to some fiery rabble rouser who
still has all of his higher functions intact.
I say leave the feeding tube in.

5) The real agenda here is to make us ashamed to be atheists and afraid
to have our names proclaimed when you are the ones who aught to be
ashamed for violating our basic human rights to freedom of conscience
and freedom from religion. By constantly trying to force your religion
on us you stamp on our rights. It seem you are getting desperate with
this ludicrous stunt.
Once again all you do is demonstrate what a nasty spiteful religion
Christianity is and demonstrate once again why the world is increasingly
turning its back on you and your kind.
By: Les Hellawell
Nominated: Mark K. Bilbo
Seconded: Jez
------------
6) Yesterday we attended the Bar Mitzvah of a family friend. This was
a "Reconstructionist" congregation, a kind of "flower power" version of
Judaism.
Towards the end of the ceremony, my ten year old daughter, after
listening to the congregation chant monotonously back to the cantor for
two hours, leaned over and whispered "Dad, they sound like robots
praising their builder."
By: Enkidu
Nominated: MarkA
Seconded: Secular Fundamentalist
------------
7) The key to living a guilt free life is not forgiveness. It is not
doing anything in the first place for which you would feel guilty.
Understanding this makes a person much more ethical than one who thinks
he has a supernatural ticket to ride.
By: Liz
Nominated: Mark K. Bilbo
Seconded: stoney
------------
8) Back when I was a Christian (fundamentalist at that), I ran into a
curious contradiction. That if you believe that nothing happens except
according to "god's will" then what's the point of praying at all? You
cannot achieve anything against the "will of god" by praying and cannot
stop something happening that is the "will of god." The "will of god"
will happen (by definition).
So what's prayer?
"Dear god, do whatever you were going to do anyway whether I prayed or
not..."
By: Mark K. Bilbo
Nominated: Michelle Malkin
Seconded: LisaKay

9) Well, remember, since we're such awful, terrible, horrible, vicious
people, if we fail to "attack" they have to keep kicking and punching
until we do...
By: Mark K. Bilbo
Nominated: stoney
Seconded: George Ricker
------------
10 ) ...if atheism is a religion, then not collecting stamps is a hobby.
By: snex
Nominated: Meteorite Debris
Seconded: Jimmy B.
------------
11) You're yet another one that found this "god" in his mirror...
By: Mark K. Bilbo
Nominated:
Seconded: Robibnikoff
------------
12) In other words, you should be permitted to continue being a rude
little ***** because you're too immature to act like an adult, anyone
who finds you tiresome and stupid should be polite and not point it out
to you, and pointing out that you're acting in contradiction to your own
religion's scripture is a waste of time. Does that accurately sum up
your position?
By: JessHC
Nominated: stoney
Seconded: Masked Avenger
------------
13) In response to:
They beat him unmercifully, scourged him, jammed a crown of deadly
thorns on his
head, nailed him to a cross, and speared him in the side. When he
died, the skies turned
dark.
And you thank your lucky stars they did that to him, or you'd have no
salvation.
The Romans slaughtered Jesus so you wouldn't have to.
By: Denis Loubet
Nominated: stoney

14) Religion is, of course about a flight from reality - the way things
are - to a make believe word where things are what they want them to be.
It is a human weakness. We would all like to win the lottery and perhaps
dream of life aboard our luxury yacht but then we wake up and return to
the daily grind.
By: Les Hellawell

Here are the rules for the Quote of the Month Contests.
RULES
1. Only atheists and agnostics may participate in the contests.
2. A quote is a valid entry for the contests if:
a. The quote is a brief piece of text
b. The quote has recently been written in alt.atheism (verifiable),
and is original (no quotes by famous authors, for instance)
c. Nomination of the quote is made by an atheist or agnostic
in alt.atheism
d. Nomination of the quote is supported by at least one other
atheist or agnostic in alt.atheism;
e. The quote is not nominated or seconded by the person who wrote it
in the first place (no one is allowed to nominate him- or herself,
but a person can vote for the quote he or she wrote.)
3. There will be two categories: 'Atheist Quote of the Month'
and 'Theist Quote of the Month'. The category for which a
quote must be nominated must be mentioned by the atheist or
agnostic who wants to nominate it.
If a quote is miscategorized (e.g. an atheist quote is mistakenly
nominated in the Theist QOTM category), the quote will be re-directed
to appear in the correct category, with approriate notification.
4. Nominations can be made until five days before the first of the
next month. If quotes are nominated after this period, they will be
considered as entries for the contest of the next month.
* When making a nomination, please use this format for the subject
line:
"aa - <A or T as applicable>QOTM Nomination (was: <original thread
name>)"
5. Each atheist or agnostic who visits alt.atheism has one vote to
cast for each category (two votes total).
6. Voting starts 5 days before the end of the month. During the month,
votes will be ignored. This way, all nominees will have equal chance of
winning.
7. The two winning quotes will be published in the QOTM Archive.
SUMMARY
A nomination must contain the following information:
1. The lines of the quote.
2. Who wrote it.
3. Who nominates or seconds the nomination of this quote (that's you!)
4. Which category this nomination is for.
5. The word "nomination" MUST appear somewhere in the subject line!
6. The original thread title must appear in the subject line.
Publish the nomination or support for a nomination in a designated
thread, preferably called "[T/A]QoTM Nomination for [month]." You can
also e-mail it to me (see below).
VOTING
1. In the last five days of the month you can cast your vote in both
categories.
2. Votes must be placed in the designated thread.

Here are the rules for the Quote of the Month Contests.
RULES
1. Only atheists and agnostics may participate in the contests.
2. A quote is a valid entry for the contests if:
a. The quote is a brief piece of text
b. The quote has recently been written in alt.atheism
(verifiable),
and is original (no quotes by famous authors, for instance)
c. Nomination of the quote is made by an atheist or agnostic
in alt.atheism
d. Nomination of the quote is supported by at least one other
atheist or agnostic in alt.atheism;
e. The quote is not nominated or seconded by the person who wrote
it
in the first place (no one is allowed to nominate him- or herself,
but a person can vote for the quote he or she wrote.)
3. There will be two categories: 'Atheist Quote of the Month'
and 'Theist Quote of the Month'. The category for which a
quote must be nominated must be mentioned by the atheist or
agnostic who wants to nominate it.
If a quote is miscategorized (e.g. an atheist quote is mistakenly
nominated in the Theist QOTM category), the quote will be
re-directed
to appear in the correct category, with approriate notification.
4. Nominations can be made until five days before the first of the
next month. If quotes are nominated after this period, they will be
considered as entries for the contest of the next month.
* When making a nomination, please use this format for the
subject
line:
"aa - <A or T as applicable>QOTM Nomination (was: <original thread
name>)"
5. Each atheist or agnostic who visits alt.atheism has one vote to
cast for each category (two votes total).
6. Voting starts 5 days before the end of the month. During the
month,
votes will be ignored. This way, all nominees will have equal chance
of
winning.
7. The two winning quotes will be published in the QOTM Archive.
SUMMARY
A nomination must contain the following information:
1. The lines of the quote.
2. Who wrote it.
3. Who nominates or seconds the nomination of this quote (that's
you!)
4. Which category this nomination is for.
5. The word "nomination" MUST appear somewhere in the subject line!
6. The original thread title must appear in the subject line.
Publish the nomination or support for a nomination in a designated
thread, preferably called "[T/A]QoTM Nomination for [month]." You
can
also e-mail it to me (see below).
VOTING
1. In the last five days of the month you can cast your vote in both
categories.
2. Votes must be placed in the designated thread.

On 26 Apr 2005, *nemo* dropped trou, farted, whirled, then shouted:
8) Back when I was a Christian (fundamentalist at that), I ran into a
curious contradiction. That if you believe that nothing happens except
according to "god's will" then what's the point of praying at all? You
cannot achieve anything against the "will of god" by praying and cannot
stop something happening that is the "will of god." The "will of god"
will happen (by definition).
So what's prayer?
"Dear god, do whatever you were going to do anyway whether I prayed or
not..."
