aa - The polls are open! AQOTM for December 2005 |
Well, here we are... another monthly deadline missed, but this time only
by a day. Since I have Jan 2 off, that'll be the deadline for voting.
Thanks for all the fun in 2005. Here's to a load of cool quotes in 2006.
Cheers!
Here are the nominations for Atheist Quote of the Month for December
2005. Vote for your favorite by responding to this thread. Votes will be
accepted until midnight, Jan 2, 2006. See rules below. Questions?
Comments?
Email me.

1) In response to:
dumb idiots who KNOW there is god, but don't like him. that's atheism.
Right. We all KNOW that we are being watched, 24/7, by an infallible,
omnipotent, omnipresent, jealous Being who can hear our deepest
thoughts, can never be deceived, and who will gladly punish us with
eternal torment for disobedience, and we decide to diss Him.
How much of a fucking idiot do you have to be to make such a statement?
By: MarkA
Nominated: Robibnikoff
Seconded: Hannele Huigens
------------
2) In response to:
Explain the "proof" for evolution. Stop attacking the faith of other
people.
Simple. Look at the world around you. Look at the trees. How do you
think they got there? They are perfectly adapted to absorb nutrients
from the soil. How do you think that happened? Look at fish. They live
in the water... and they can breathe in the water! What luck! Look at
your own body, and how perfectly all the parts fit and work together.
Surely all of this ordered complexity could not have instantly popped
into existence by mere chance. Clearly, it must have evolved.
By: William T. Goat
Nominated: skyeyes
Seconded: Jimmy B.
------------
3) In response to:
Some more Mormons are trying to get legal recognition for their
plural marriages... while exercising their hatred of homosexuals, I would bet.
Because, you know, since the dawn of time, marriage has been defined as
between one man one several different women (and young girls).
By: pluther
Nominated: stoney
Seconded: Hannele Huigens
------------
4) In response to:
Why DO atheists want to kill Christmas?
For the insurance money.
By: Malibu Skipper
Nominated: Douglas Berry
Seconded: Jimmy B.
------------
5) It's amazing the number of things that religious folk believe based
on their inability to learn.
By: David Jensen
Nominated: Fred Stone
Seconded: John Hachmann
------------
6) In response to:
Now, because Atheists hijacked America's public schools
and America's justice system some decades ago
Argument from persecution:
1. Jebus said believers will be persecuted
2. I am an idiot
3. People often point this out
4. Therefore the babble is true
By: Thurisaz, Germanic barbarian
Nominated: satyr
Seconded: Liz
------------
7) In response to:
BECAUSE ATHEISM IS properly defined as a "belief", e.g.,
quoting from Webster's New World Dictionary & Thesaurus:
Most dictionaries are written by theists. Theists don't understand the
difference between believing in a god and presupposing the existence of
a god.
By: Uncle Vic
Nominated: Gregory Gadow
Seconded: Sanity's little helper
------------
8) You believe that you are at the beck and call of an inscrutable,
omnipotent being, who has some "Plan" that we are a part of, but we have
no idea what the "Plan" is, or even why He has one in the first place.
He knows everything we are going to do before we do it, but we still
have "free will". When we die, if He so chooses, we will get to spend
eternity sitting at his feet, just enjoying being in the same room with
Him. Eternity. Not a trillion trillion trillion years, or even a
trillion trillion trillion times longer than that. Eternity. Otherwise,
we will be sent to be tortured forever, because we tried to be good but
weren't good enough, or we didn't believe in the correct prophet, based
on the say-so of a bunch of goat herders thousands of years ago. Of
course, if you DON'T try to be good, and spend your life mugging little
old ladies, or kidnapping, raping and murdering 10-year old girls, but
REPENT and accept JESUS as your LORD and SAVIOUR before you die, you
WILL get to go to Heaven and hang with the MAN.
.....and you think that WE are the robots. I really get tired of asking,
why do some theists have to be so fucking stupid?
By: MarkA
Nominated: Uncle Vic
Seconded: zamboni30000

9) Customer: Hello. I wish to complain about this so-called 'scientific
theory'
what I purchased not half an hour ago from this very establishment.
Salesman: Oh yes, 'Intelligent Design'. What, uh... what's wrong with it?
Customer: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. Its vacuous,
that's what's wrong with it!
Salesman: No, no, uh... what we need now is to 'teach the controversy'...
Customer: Look matey, I know an empty 'argument from incredulity' when I
see one, and I'm looking at one right now.
Salesman: No, no, it's not empty: it's just being elaborated. Remarkable
theory, 'Intelligent Design', innit, eh? I mean, just look at all these
books and articles: millions and millions of words...!
Customer: The verbiage don't enter into it, my lad. It's stone dead.
It's a non-starter. Empirically untestable, it belongs in metaphysics.
This 'theory' generates no predictions; has no contribution to make
beyond extended polemics; and can't even be honest about who it thinks
the 'Designer' was. Bereft of all logical and epistemological
credibility, it has no scientific status! If certain right-wing and
fundamentalist pressure-groups hadn't hit upon it as a way of attacking
decades of discomfiting scientific and social progress, it'd be pushing
up daisies! It's off the table. It's kicked the waste-paper bucket. THIS
IS A NON-THEORY!
Salesman: Well, I'd better replace it then. [takes a quick peek around]
Sorry, squire: looks like that's all we've got...
Customer: I see, I see. I get the picture.
Salesman: I've got a piece of coal that looks quite a bit like a human
tibia, if you squint at it...
Customer: Pray, is it part of a theory that unifies the paleontological
and biological sciences and leads to a powerful understanding of
observed homologies and the nested hierarchy of life?
Salesman: Not really.
Customer: WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT FOR DARWINISM THEN, IS
IT?
By: Smurfette
Nominated: Carl Kaufmann
Seconded: John Baker
------------
10) In response to:
I don't believe in God but I was wondering 'what if I am wrong'?
That you don't believe in God? How could you be wrong about that?
By: Santolina chamaecyparissus
Nominated: stoney
Seconded: satyr
------------
11) As I've said before, if you want the eternal verities, wonder, awe
and a sense of who, where and what you are, the sciences really can't be
beaten! My first glimmerings of understanding of time dilation, the
curve of space-time due to a mass, chaos theory and strange attractors
and a thousand other beautiful products of science give me immense
personal satisfaction and pride in belonging to a race that can produce
such people that can tease understanding out of this very beautiful
universe we inhabit. And not clutter life up with tawdry little fictions
that hide the true beauty of it all....
By: Les Hemmings
Nominated: JPG
Seconded: Enkidu
------------
12) In response to :
More importantly, how did we manage to kill God? And how do we wash
the blood off our hands?
Use "Confession®" brand soap.
Used by the Vatican to ethnically cleanse entire populations.
Price: 1 soul, plus tax (or nails).
By: Michael Gray
Nominated: Olrik
Seconded: Hannele Huigens

Here are the rules for the Quote of the Month Contests.
RULES
1. Only atheists and agnostics may participate in the contests.
2. A quote is a valid entry for the contests if:
a. The quote is a brief piece of text
b. The quote has recently been written in alt.atheism (verifiable),
and is original (no quotes by famous authors, for instance)
c. Nomination of the quote is made by an atheist or agnostic
in alt.atheism
d. Nomination of the quote is supported by at least one other
atheist or agnostic in alt.atheism;
e. The quote is not nominated or seconded by the person who wrote it
in the first place (no one is allowed to nominate him- or herself,
but a person can vote for the quote he or she wrote.)
3. There will be two categories: 'Atheist Quote of the Month'
and 'Theist Quote of the Month'. The category for which a
quote must be nominated must be mentioned by the atheist or
agnostic who wants to nominate it.
If a quote is miscategorized (e.g. an atheist quote is mistakenly
nominated in the Theist QOTM category), the quote will be re-directed
to appear in the correct category, with approriate notification.
4. Nominations can be made until five days before the first of the
next month. If quotes are nominated after this period, they will be
considered as entries for the contest of the next month.
* When making a nomination, please use this format for the subject
line:
"aa - <A or T as applicable>QOTM Nomination (was: <original thread
name>)"
5. Each atheist or agnostic who visits alt.atheism has one vote to
cast for each category (two votes total).
6. Voting starts 5 days before the end of the month. During the month,
votes will be ignored. This way, all nominees will have equal chance of
winning.
7. The two winning quotes will be published in the QOTM Archive.
SUMMARY
A nomination must contain the following information:
1. The lines of the quote.
2. Who wrote it.
3. Who nominates or seconds the nomination of this quote (that's you!)
4. Which category this nomination is for.
5. The word "nomination" MUST appear somewhere in the subject line!
6. The original thread title must appear in the subject line.
Publish the nomination or support for a nomination in a designated
thread, preferably called "[T/A]QoTM Nomination for [month]." You can
also e-mail it to me (see below).
VOTING
1. In the last five days of the month you can cast your vote in both
categories.
2. Votes must be placed in the designated thread.

There are good reason for allowing options like DMB and NOTA in
elections. (If you don't want to count them, of course you don't have
to.)

I choose #9, although I was tempted by #1.
Customer: WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT FOR DARWINISM THEN, IS
IT?

2) In response to:
Explain the "proof" for evolution. Stop attacking the faith of other
people.
Simple. Look at the world around you. Look at the trees. How do you
think they got there? They are perfectly adapted to absorb nutrients
from the soil. How do you think that happened? Look at fish. They live
in the water... and they can breathe in the water! What luck! Look at
your own body, and how perfectly all the parts fit and work together.
Surely all of this ordered complexity could not have instantly popped
into existence by mere chance. Clearly, it must have evolved.

1) In response to:

Right. We all KNOW that we are being watched, 24/7, by an infallible,

eternal torment for disobedience, and we decide to diss Him.

This one, though it was a hard choice, lots of very good ones this month.
One complaint though, number 6 should have been in the TQOTM section. Our

Customer: WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT FOR DARWINISM THEN, IS
IT?

Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet *nemo*
(nemo0037@earthlink.dieSPAM.net) made the light shine upon us with this:
8) You believe that you are at the beck and call of an inscrutable,
omnipotent being, who has some "Plan" that we are a part of, but we
have no idea what the "Plan" is, or even why He has one in the first
place. He knows everything we are going to do before we do it, but we
still have "free will". When we die, if He so chooses, we will get to
spend eternity sitting at his feet, just enjoying being in the same
room with Him. Eternity. Not a trillion trillion trillion years, or
even a trillion trillion trillion times longer than that. Eternity.
Otherwise, we will be sent to be tortured forever, because we tried to
be good but weren't good enough, or we didn't believe in the correct
prophet, based on the say-so of a bunch of goat herders thousands of
years ago. Of course, if you DON'T try to be good, and spend your
life mugging little old ladies, or kidnapping, raping and murdering
10-year old girls, but REPENT and accept JESUS as your LORD and
SAVIOUR before you die, you WILL get to go to Heaven and hang with the
MAN.
....and you think that WE are the robots. I really get tired of
asking, why do some theists have to be so fucking stupid?
