aa - The polls are open! AQOTM for June 2005 |
Man, I hate newspaper blogs. Folks there just don't have the civility
and self-control you see in alt.atheism. This place is a breath of fresh
air, I can tell you!
Here are the nominations for Atheist Quote of the Month for June 2005.
Vote for your favorite by responding to this thread. Votes will be
accepted until midnight, June 30. See rules below. Questions?

1) Small wonder that the regressive garbage that is 'religion' is always
there for the vulnerable to 'rediscover' - and small wonder that the
infantilised victims of such regressive garbage are *immune to logic and
reason*: we are dealing with an area of the mind in which 'logic and
reason *simply haven't happened yet*...
By: Katt
Nominated: Bonnie B.
Seconded: Hannele Huigens
-----
2) In response to:
Have you spoken to your therapist about these delusions?
Listen, bub: it was my therapist who *told me* about the Flying
Spaghetti Monster, all honour and blessings upon Him.
Best $20,000 I ever spent. Changed my life, I can tell you.
But then, that's the thing about worshipping the One True God: it
changes your life. Even if he is just made of pasta that's been extruded
into thin strips and boiled for about ten minutes until 'al dente'.
It changes your life. That's how you know you've found 'the real
thing'...!!!
Plus, Pepsi comes in a blue can.
By: Katt
Nominated: DanielSan
Seconded: Vic Sagerquist

3) The search for truth is a constant, ongoing process. It never ends.
The instant that you decide that you have found it, you will have
ensured that you will never progress any further, and you will never be
able to do anything except watch as the world passes you by as you
remain mired in your illusions.
By: Conspiracy of Doves
Nominated: Vic Sagerquist
Seconded: John Popelish

4) re: notion that Naxis weren't Christians:
So here's what we've learned about evasive and self-serving Christain
mendacity: if something walks like a duck; quacks like a duck; looks
like a duck; is descended from ducks; was brought up as a duck; never
claimed not to be a duck; quotes ducks; justifies itself in the language
of ducks; is accepted by ducks as one of their own; says it's doing the
work of ducks; is photographed shaking hands with leading ducks; is a
participant in and supporter of duck-type rituals; is never condemned by
the organisations that define duckdom; uses the slogans and insignia of
ducks; refers endlessly to the mythology and history of ducks, and has
the same racial prejudices as ducks do, then ... *it might not actually
be 'a duck'*. Reason: the Christains *moved the fucking goalposts* - and
they won't tell you *where to*...
By: Katt
Nominated: Carl Kaufmann
Seconded: Harry F. Leopold
------------
5) In response to:
"All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
Evolved through a process involving combinations of amino acids... "
"Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
Sexual selection made their glowing colours,
Survival advantage made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden-
The laws of physics made them ev'ry one.
The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The flowers by the water
We gather ev'ry day.
Evolution gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is the Universe,
Whose big bang created all things well."
By: JPG
Nominated: Jon
Seconded: Loadnlock
------------
6) In response to:
This sample behavior on this forum demonstrates a disposition that is
very much parallel to the ethic of any jailer who would torture those
who failed to see the truth of his/her intellect.
No, obviously it is based upon your actions here. This *is a public
forum, just as an elevator is a public transport. What you are doing is
not only the equivalent of farting in an elevator, but insisting that
the other occupants reactions towards you are unprovoked hostility as
you noisily continue to flatuate away to your hearts content. *Then, to
add insult to injury, you claim it is a character defect of the other
passengers for being hostile to your malodorous expulsions.
By: David H
Nominated: The other Donald
Seconded: J Forbes
------------
7) Essentially fundamentalists are all about themselves. Why else
would they make up an infinitely powerful being completely focused
on them just so they don't have to think about or take responsibility
for what they do.
By: Kate
Nominated: Steve Knight
Seconded: Ben Goren
------------
8) Of course religious people are going to say they're "happy." Why
shouldn't they? They've got their "God," that's all one needs to be
happy, right?
But, in my experience, they don't look or act very happy. The deeply
religious people I know worry about *everything*! What the neighbors
will think; what "God" will think; the "unacceptable" thoughts they
try not to think; whether or not they're going to heaven; whether they
should allow the phone company to assign them a number with 666 in it;
how they're going to make it to church on Sunday when all the kids are
sick with the flu; how they're going to make the entire rest of the
world act the way they think the entire rest of the world should act
when the entire rest of the world just wants religious people to shut
the ***** up and let it get on with what it was doing.

Nominated: Katt
Seconded: Deep Thought

Here are the rules for the Quote of the Month Contests.
RULES
1. Only atheists and agnostics may participate in the contests.
2. A quote is a valid entry for the contests if:
a. The quote is a brief piece of text
b. The quote has recently been written in alt.atheism (verifiable),
and is original (no quotes by famous authors, for instance)
c. Nomination of the quote is made by an atheist or agnostic
in alt.atheism
d. Nomination of the quote is supported by at least one other
atheist or agnostic in alt.atheism;
e. The quote is not nominated or seconded by the person who wrote it
in the first place (no one is allowed to nominate him- or herself,
but a person can vote for the quote he or she wrote.)
3. There will be two categories: 'Atheist Quote of the Month'
and 'Theist Quote of the Month'. The category for which a
quote must be nominated must be mentioned by the atheist or
agnostic who wants to nominate it.
If a quote is miscategorized (e.g. an atheist quote is mistakenly
nominated in the Theist QOTM category), the quote will be re-directed
to appear in the correct category, with approriate notification.
4. Nominations can be made until five days before the first of the
next month. If quotes are nominated after this period, they will be
considered as entries for the contest of the next month.
* When making a nomination, please use this format for the subject
line:
"aa - <A or T as applicable>QOTM Nomination (was: <original thread
name>)"
5. Each atheist or agnostic who visits alt.atheism has one vote to
cast for each category (two votes total).
6. Voting starts 5 days before the end of the month. During the month,
votes will be ignored. This way, all nominees will have equal chance of
winning.
7. The two winning quotes will be published in the QOTM Archive.
SUMMARY
A nomination must contain the following information:
1. The lines of the quote.
2. Who wrote it.
3. Who nominates or seconds the nomination of this quote (that's you!)
4. Which category this nomination is for.
5. The word "nomination" MUST appear somewhere in the subject line!
6. The original thread title must appear in the subject line.
Publish the nomination or support for a nomination in a designated
thread, preferably called "[T/A]QoTM Nomination for [month]." You can
also e-mail it to me (see below).
VOTING
1. In the last five days of the month you can cast your vote in both
categories.
2. Votes must be placed in the designated thread.

By the way, I haven't seen you post the winners of the QOTM contests in a very
long time. Somewhere in the middle of the month I'll turn my killfiles off and
search a tens of thousands of alt.atheism message and find nothing. I visited
"http://home.earthlink.net/~jehdjh/Relpg.html", found nothing, used google
searching for "AQOTM archive" and found no archives of winners. Where are the
winners archived?

Speaking as a multiply nominated contender for this month's prize, I'm happy
to say that *I don't think it matters either way*: as always, when one takes
on the theist backlash against reason and intelligence, it isn't the

combining both winners into a single post, Look for it later this

"It is necessary to the happiness of man that he be mentally faithful
to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving;
it consists in professing to believe what one does not believe. It is
impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that
mental lying has produced in society. When man has so far corrupted and
prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional
belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the
commission of every other crime." - Thomas Paine, "The Age of Reason"

The Bible
If you're going to write a good bit of fantasy fiction, at least put some
goblins or trolls in it, you dumb cunts. Given the choice between this
bollocks and the Lord of the Rings, which one do you think we're going to
go for? The Bible with its bunch of bearded nomad hippies talking shite, or
something with fucking battles and dragons?
And I think you're forgetting the first page, which should read: 'All
characters in this book are fictitious and any resemblance to any real
persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental'.
I liked the bit when God and Jesus have a lightsaber duel on a bridge
though.

#4 gets my vote
